Chiefs Talk to WR/KR Mardy Gilyard at Senior Bowl
Representatives from the Kansas City Chiefs talked with receiver and kick returner Mardy Gilyard out of the University of Cincinnati, according to Will Spencer of DraftBreakdown.com.
As a freshman in 2005, Gilyard played cornerback. In 2006, he was redshirted for academic reasons.
In 2007, he was moved to receiver where he caught 36 balls for 536 yards.
2008 is when he really began to shine. He caught 81 balls for 1,276 yards and 11 touchdowns.
To prove that wasn't a fluke, he posted nearly identical stats in 2009.
The biggest question mark on him that I've read is whether his light frame can effectively shed defenders at the NFL level. In the Bearcats bowl game, he caught seven balls for 41 yards and had trouble getting away from the Gators defensive backs.
He's also a kick returner. The Chiefs, of course, rotated out receivers and kick returners all season.
NFLDraftScout.com ranks him as the 11th receiver in this draft class and lists him at 5'11 and 179 pounds.

He caught an awful lot of passes in his final two seasons, yes.
It’s hard to say how well a guy’s going to catch passes from a QB with whom he has never worked before yesterday.

Dante Hall, anybody?

No one said anything about a WR2 spot
he’s a 3/4 at best and, if drafted/signed by KC it would be primarily as a return specialist, not a WR.
Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...
People said the exact same thing about Santonio Holmes
Gilyard is more comparable to Holmes than DeSean Jackson in size…he checked into the senior bowl at 6’0’’ 179. Holmes was very close to that, whereas Jackson was about 5’10’’ and 168.
Id rather see a guy like Shipley...
That can do both effectively. Would cost a higher draft pick but I don’t see the point in drafting a guy who’s a KR/PR only and thats where Gilyard is headed.

Oh No
Unless he falls to the 4th round would I consider him.
Gilyard is a game changing presence.
He needs to get stronger and add weight to his frame but he has godo hands and incredible vision on the field. He’s worth a look for sure. He took his team and put them on his back by making play after play in many games the last 2 years. He’s a guy you want on your team.

a guy with his frame
could put on 10-20 lbs of lean mass pretty quick with an NFL SAC coach/regimen.
No way he goes earlier than mid-2nd at the very best, meaning he’ll most likely be available at the top of the 3rd and possibly even later. He’s got a very good chance to produce in the return game from day one (that chance increases significantly if he gets up to 190-200lbs during the offseason) and could provide much needed depth and game-breaking speed as a WR.

I wouldn't want us
to reach for him a spend a high pick, but I can’t deny that I’d LOVE to have Gliyard on our team. He’s a hard worker and a leader. He’d be a great returner and a very good #2 WR IMO.

He hasnt looked good at all this week at Senior Bowl practice.
The corner from Boise State has impressed me though.
Matt Cassell will be a top 5 QB in 2010
Jamall Charles will be a top 2 RB in 2010
Chiefs defence will be a top 15 in 2010
I will be a Chiefs fan until the day I die
I've been between shows, but everytime I saw him he looked good.
He was the only corner I saw yesterday to peek in at the QB to see how many steps he dropped back. When the QB only dropped back 3 steps he jumped the route broke it up. He was also the only one I didnt see get burned on a receivers route , but like I said I was switching between shows so I may have missed something.

I've always...
liked Kyle Wilson. The kid has amazing focus and he doubles as a punt returner too. We can get him in the 2nd round.

Gilyard
would be a better K/PR option than Wilson imo.

Riley Cooper
Depending on who we get in the earlier rounds i’d like to see us pick him up 5th or 6th…
I like Gilyard as a early 4th round pick...
He would be a game changer in the KR/PR team… then in 2011 when he beefs up a little bit he will be able to take over the slot.
Go Chiefs!!!!
Have none of you ever heard of...
Wes Welker or Steve Smith? Neither of these guys is big by traditional NFL standards. That doesn’t prevent them from performing at incredibly high levels. Gilyard (two inches taller than Welker and Smith) would be a great selection in the 2nd round if the Chiefs think he can man the slot and perform in the return game.
Big fan of Gilyard
don’t really care what he’s been doing at any senior bowl stuff, if you’ve ever watched this guy in games he is a game changer. Definitely agree that he isn’t worth a top 3 pick, though.
