Chiefs GM Pioli Says Good Things About Blount, Haley Checks Out DBs

When the Senior Bowl began this week, I was more excited than I have been in years past because of one thing: Twitter.

Yes, Twitter.

With many reporters using Twitter, we hear a few more tidbits than what we normally would. Now, these are just things seen in passing but they're interesting nonetheless.

"Chiefs GM Scott Pioli a few feet away saying some good things about [Legarrette] Blount," David Syvertsen of New Era Scouting tweeted moments ago.

Blount is the running back perhaps most famous for the punch. If you don't know what I'm talking about, YouTube Blount and punch. He told Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com that he's here to show the scouts that he's ready to make an impact.

"Sitting next to Todd Haley....keeping a close eye on the DBs...Ghee and Cook looking good," he also tweeted.

NFLDraftScout.com has 6'0", 189 pound Brandon Ghee rated as the 10th best cornerback. They list Chris cook at 6'2", 212 pounds (big!) and the 21st cornerback.

Me and my boy Arrowdread have been pimping Blount all season.

Dude can straight run fools over. He has proven that he can accept the role as the #2 runner as he was the second option behind James. He’d be a perfect complement to Charles.

by HIV 2 Elway on Jan 26, 2010 12:14 PM CST reply actions

He has also proven to punch out an opponent, try to punch out a teammate,.....

…..try to punch out several fans, and get hauled away to the locker room where I’m sure the fun continued. How long do you think it would take for a Chiefs opponent to get him to take a swing for a 15 yard penalty? My guess is the first quarter of the first game. No thank you.

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far is as needed?

You ready to bad mouth DT?

Who also lost it during a high profile game?
Haynesworth lost his cool, came back and hasn’t had an incident since.

by HIV 2 Elway on Jan 26, 2010 12:34 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

He completely lost his cool in the heat of the moment, once. This isn’t Lawerence Phillips we’re talking about here. I think if he checks out otherwise (off-field) he’d certainly be worthy of consideration on the 3rd day.

I agree.

Anthony Dixon, Charles Scott, Montero Hardesty are all big backs that could do the same job, why take a risk on Blount? Not to mention the waiver wire.

by tenacious rdc on Jan 26, 2010 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

Have you seen his running highlights from his Jr season?

If he checks out otherwise & falls to the 5th round, he’d be a great value pick.

re

The knocks on him, besides his incident, are he isn’t that great at picking up blitzes and doesn’t have great hands. I don’t care how many people he could run over he wouldn’t make it past the first cut because everybody knows if your not an offensive lineman you better damn well block on one of Todd Haley’s teams.

by tenacious rdc on Jan 26, 2010 12:50 PM CST up reply actions

I think he could probably learn those things

I’m not saying I’m sold on the guy, but if he was a 1st or 2nd round pick sans “the punch”, and he’s shown that it was an isolated incident, wouldn’t he be worth taking in the 5th round?

Predictions:
This year will be better

by jmcgoblue on Jan 26, 2010 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

For argument's sake...

A year ago Shonn Green was known to have wooden hands, a trait which has subsequently been verified at the NFL level, and wasn’t known as very good at picking up blitzes. Shonn Green did very well this year and looks to have a very good future in the league.

Now, Blount probably will not do as well as Green, and I agree that he will not see the field if he doesn’t get good at blitz pickups…. but for a late-round pick is he not worth the risk? Sure, maybe you take Dixon earlier, or you take Scott from LSU, but they all will have to answer questions about hands, blitz pickup and character. I don’t mind if Blount is in the mix, given what I know about him at this point.

I would not have a problem with Blount if it was not to early.

I think he would be on a short leash, and setting out most of a season we’ll see how he has matured.

Talk is that Kyle Wilson is one of the better looking CB so far at the Senior Bowl.

by Helmets on Jan 26, 2010 12:32 PM CST reply actions

Chiefs need some attitude

The Chiefs have been soft for years. Its time to get tough again. At this time Blount is considered a 6 th or 7 th round pick. The punch shows he wants to win and he has passion. My problem is, I don’t want players like Adam ( pacman) Jones) who gets in the NFL and still want to be a gangster and hang out with gangsters. I’m sure Pioli and
Haley would look into this if they are really interested,

Blount is a kid that could plug in a team with a strong core of leaders and it would work. I mean, we’ve seen it happen like with Randy Moss at New England. It took all but 3 hours as a patriot to shut him up. We don’t have that kind of lockeroom.

“The punch to Hout’s jaw was a reaction to Hout running over to Blount after the final play of Boise State’s victory in the season opener and taunting Blount by slapping him on the shoulder while reminding him of a brash statement Blount made over the summer about wanting revenge for Oregon’s loss to the Broncos last season.

"I’m the same person; I was never a bad person in the first place," Blount said. "It’s just that, everybody has feelings. One temper flies higher than another one, and the next thing you know you black out and you don’t know what’s happening until it’s too late."

Blount is the kind of strong leader our locker room needs.

He gladly accepted his role as RB on the scout team.
He took a backseat to James.
You didn’t hear a word out of him after the Boise State game.
He did everything he could to help the team.

by HIV 2 Elway on Jan 26, 2010 12:49 PM CST up reply actions

Blount is a beast and a short yardage monster

I work with some young co-workers that graduated from Oregon and the players at Oregon all loved him as a teammate but also hated him because he punihsed the opposing defenses on the scout team in practice.

Blount will be taken in the 4th round maybe evern sooner by a team that wants a Brandon Jacobs style runner. There is no doubt in my mind he won’t be effective as a runner on the next level.

Making a mistake and being punished and learning from it while in college is the best thing that could have happened to this young man. Pioli go draft him!

Well, your high standards are commendable (no sarcasam here)

but I’d be willing to bet there are many players currently on KCs roster who have done worse in private. And honestly, they guy who got punched was doing a lot of taunting…he should have been punished as well.

In any case, it’s not going to matter…Cincy will take this guy far before KC would ever consider him.

Predictions:

by jmcgoblue on Jan 26, 2010 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

There is no doubt that guy was taunting but....

….Blount waited until he turned away then went in for the punch then taunted back as he back pedaled. Then he proceeded to punch a teammate twice! Did his teammate punch back? No he didn’t, he stopped and got his composure. And by the way Cincy will get beat out by Al Davis for Blount’s services…. thats where he belongs anyway.

Everyone has closeted issues

Which is why I don’t bother passing judgement against people that find themselves in a difficult situation, or that made a mistake that may not be consistent with how they’ve conducted themselves previously.

Besides, every one should be offered an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and atone for past transgressions. Well, most people. There are SOME things that are inexcusable. But a young man who has had a free ride as a superior athlete inciting a fist fight is not one of them.

I am on record saying that a monster “thumper” may not be what kc needs. I prefer a more versatile back that can catch and block.

Haley and Pioli seem to prefer them as well, and a slasher is better for the ZB scheme.

Again, I contend that the best short yardage and goal line backs I have seen in KC arer marcus allen and priest holmes (incidentally, both GREAT character guys as well)

Because I know what is right and what is wrong? I won’t say that I would not cheer for the Chiefs as a team if they drafted Blount, I’m just saying I hope they would do it without him and I expect them to make the “right” choices when it comes to character. I like to think that the Chiefs organization is a class act and I think this would tarnish the luster for me a bit. Sorry but I’ll pass on Blount.

After looking extremely impressive at the weigh-in Florida State S Myron Rolle carried that momentum onto the field and had a very good practice. I’d rather wait for Allen Bradford out of USC next season. He’s gonna be better than blount.

Second, one of my friends starts MLB for Boise, and he said blount never shut up during that game. He was insulting, taunting, throwing cheap shots, and that was before the game was over. I personally don’t want him, just because of that.

Third, I’d love to grab Myron rolle in the second if berry is gone for our 5th. He’s definitey a pioli guy. Rhodes scholar, smart guy. I can’t wait to see him in the NFL.
