Mizzou LB Sean Weatherspoon Willing (And Able) To Play Special Teams
Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com caught up with a local guy that folks from one side of the State Line love and the others, well, hate going against him.
Yes, it's Missouri Tigers' Sean Weatherspoon, 6'0", 241 pound linebacker.
He's projected to be a first round pick by a lot of folks and it's not just because of his athletic ability. From many accounts that I've read today, Weatherspoon was the vocal leader on defense during practice. And his willingness to do the little things, like play special teams, will only help his cause.
"It's just going all out on special teams," he told Looney.
"Special teams is going to be the place where I make my living for a while. I plan to come in and just play every special teams I can get on and I'lll be willing to learn it and go full speed."
Like a lot of players in Mobile, Alabama this week, Weatherspoon said he's using this as an opportunity to demonstrate to the representatives from all 32 NFL teams that he's worthy of a high draft pick.
"It was fun," he said. "It was though, though. You get out here and learn a new system and all that. To see all these great players, it's fun being around them. And everyone's good so it's a chance to showcase what you can do so it's a big opportunity for all of us."
Are the Chiefs interested? Well, GM Scott Pioli did attend the Missouri/Nebraska game in Columbia, MO earlier this year.

I imagine
Weatherspoon was the only one being scouted at the Missouri/Nebraska game

Pioli said in a radio interview the next day
One defensive player on both sides of the ball…Weatherspoon and Suh.

I hope they enjoyed the rain
Weatherspoon doesn’t fit the Chiefs Defense and Suh might but will be gone by #5.

Weatherspoon...
is by far my favorite Tiger in recent memory. I don’t see much place for him in KC, but boy is he a redass.
Couldn't he play ILB?
I thought he was smart about recognizing plays, good at coverage, and hits like a truck.

He’s quick, he’s a solid tackler, he’s got great instincts and his intangibles are off the charts. He just doesn’t have the frame. Reminds me of Zac Thomas, a 2 time all american and butkis finalist from texas Tech. He was drafted in the 5th round. Spoon will probably go 4th or 5th. I’m not saying Spoon will have a hall of fame career like Zack, just referencing how far guys drop because of their frame and you can still get value at the 5th pick if your willing to take a chance.
I think that late in the draft your looking at a lot of guy with warts on their resume but the guys you want are players you think will compete, regardless. Players that will compete – and not just try to survive 2-a-days.
Rolando McClain
I would much rather trade down/ risk a high pick on Bamas ILB McClain. He is like a coach on the field. Reminds me a lot of Tedy Bruschi intelligence with Jerod Mayo tackling ability (to stick with the patriot theme of the year). He would be able to match up against phillip rivers and make his checks to whatever he sees going on. Plus, he is a game film hound. He will always be in the av room going over tape.
