Potential Coaching Candidates (DC Edition)
Everyone is fed up with Clancy Pendergast. I know I am. He has taken a bad defense and made them terrible. We have given up records to other guys atleast twice this season. Miles Austin and Jerome Harrison. This has to stop and it stops with Clancy!
Here are some candidates for Defensive Coordinator...
As always please list your suggestions in the comments....
Thanks
Al Groh - Unemployed
Al Groh is 65yrs old and was recently fired as HC at Virginia. He was there from 2001-2009 and posted a record of 59-53 with a 3-2 Bowl record. Before he landed a job at his alumni he coached with the New York Jets from 1997-2000. 97-99 he was LB coach and was HC in 2000, he went 9-7. Most of you know Todd Haley was employed by the Jets from 1995-2000. So the connection is layed down. Groh also has a 13yr working history with Bill Parcells. Before the Jets he was Defensive Coordinator for the Patriots from 1993-1996. Groh is a big time 3-4 guy. He even implemented the 3-4 defense at Virginia. Most College coaches dont run that type of defense.
Dick Jauron - Unemployed
Dick Jauron is 59yrs old. He was most recently fired as HC of the Buffalo Bills where he was 24-33 from 2006-2009. In 2004 he was DC for the Detroit Lions and in 2005 he was DC/Intirim HC and posted a 1-4 record. From 1999-2003 he was HC of the Chicago Bears and was 35-45 overall. This is where he worked with Todd Haley from 2001-2003. Before Chicago, Jauron was DC for the Jacksonville Jaguars expansion team from 95-98 with Tom Caughlin.
Pepper Johnson - Defensive Line Coach - New England Patriots
Pepper Johnson is 45yrs old. Pepper Johnson started his coaching career in New England in 2000 as Assistant LB coach. From 2001-2003 he was Inside LB Coach and from 2004 until now he is the Defensive Line Coach. The Patriots employ a 3-4 defense. Pepper has coached the most important parts of the defense in LB and DL. Pepper has ties with Scott Pioli while both being in New England. Pepper played for the Jets from 97-98 while Haley was there. He also was with the 1990 SB winning Giants playing ILB in their 34 D....that team had a FB by the name of Maurice Carthon. Bill Parcells connection. He was on the 1986 SB winning Giants but was not a starter...again with Mo Carthon and Bill Parcells. Bill Belichick was the DC of both winning teams.

Excellent, Wonder when the Changes start. This week would be fine with me. Need to get the OC and DC if available on board early and start turning the soil on coaches.
We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Skins & Raiders! Pittsburgh Sweet!

Agree
No more waiting until playoff are over bullcrap! We need to get the ball rolling! Immediately after the game Clancy should get canned….along with Ronnie Bradford, Gary Gibbs, Tim Krumrie, Dedric Ward, and Richie Anderson…..IMO

Awesome post...
Mainly because you didn’t mention Romeo. I like Al Groh and Pepper, not sure what I think of Jauron… Need to research how well his defenses did.

Thanks
I’m steering away from Weis and Crennel. Too obvious to make sense if u catch me. Plus I doubt Weis wants to work for Haley….and Crennel has had health problems but could still be a possibility.

Ive been looking over Groh's and Jauron's defenses...
and they are all over the place, at least looking at ypg. Im not sure why Dick Jauron got so many head coaching shots.

Dick was AP coach of the year when the Bears went 13-3
They had a monster D….so I guess he showed some potential

One of my first post was I had Pepper as my D coach
Hate Larry Johnson.
I think he is ready to carry a defense of his own.
3-4 defense is in his blood just like Groh.

Can't get Peppers until NE is done
Might be a couple of weeks
Would like to look at Russ Grimm for OC but again have to wait for AZ to be done.

Why would Russ Grim make a lateral move?

He is ast hc/running game coordinator
I would say OC would be a promotion…IMO but I think Grimm and Whisenhunt are tight so Grimm probably wouldn’t leave a good deal in Arizona.

Arizona doesn't have an OC...
So I would say that Grimm is as close a thing to it.

Yeah
They have a passing game co and a running game co…..I vouched for the passing game co Mike Miller to be our OC….he was WR coach under Haley in Arizona.

Not a Named OC, what does the NFL say
We might want to Approach Russ about the OC job as soon as we possibly can. Turnover in the coaching ranks brings turnover in the Coordinator positions also.
As stated in MountainManMike’s post Gailey was OC when Haley moved in maybe with the current open position Russ would come join the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010.
Yes I do have it on Notepad for ready reference:)

Whoever comes in to fill that void..
Needs to be a QB guru and wear that hat too. Cassel needs that and I think will really thrive with that added attention and lifted responsibilty off his off shoulders.

You didn't post during the game or after yesterday
So I had to assume his good play put you in a permanent state of unconciousness or you had an erection that persisted for more then 4 hours and had to consult a physician.

Another good point about Pepper.
He could be the determining factor in bringing Vince Wilfork over…

Wont be Jauron because he'll make Haleys head explode...
Can you imagine Haley yelling in Jaurons face and him just standing there emotionless and statuesque staring blankly without blinking into Haleys face. That would infuriate him to the point that his head would burst into flames.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
Off That List
I’d prefer Groh followed by Johnson. No way in hell I want Jauron anywhere near my team. He’s a really nice guy, but the dude’s been coaching for too many rotten teams. He should change his name to “Perpetually Gracious Loser”.

Somebody's gonna love this job
The lucky guy that gets this job gets to take this ugly, moldy lump of clay that we call a defense and mold it into a legitimate NFL defense without any interference from the HC. It has been proven that most offensive HCs do not interfere too much with defense (see: Dick Vermeil & Greg Robinson).

Now I said that and maybe you responded to that
But come Monday, Haley will have something to say and Pioli will definitely have something to say. Pendergast might have read the writing on the wall already, WHO knows, We will come next week or shortly thereafter

I just hope we don't wait until it is too late
to get the best guy. I think that I’d trust Pioli and Haley to pick the best available, but I don’t want them waiting until the best are gone and end up with the last man standing.
I know this is a D Coord post, but what about Mike Leech as QB Coach? OC never, but he has done wonders with QBs and passing accuracy.
I'm with you
Staff should be number one priority. Get these guys in place for draft and FA period. Get them comfortable with KC and each other.
As far as Leach….I would take him. Don’t know if he would step all the way down to QB coach but I would take him in a second…he is an offensive genious

I think it would be a bad move for Leech to jump to the NFL...
some college team is going to throw a bucket of money his way.

He may be out of coaching for a year to let this stuff settle down
He would be smart to take a leap if he wants a job for next year, IMO.
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
