Broncos Part Ways With Defensive Coordinator

The Denver Broncos have parted ways with defensive coordinator Mike Nolan according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com. Glazer reports the decision was mutual.

There are a few interesting things about this decision.

First, why the heck would the Broncos allow this to happen when Nolan brought their scoring defense from 30th in 2008 to 11th in 2009?

Second, this adds credence to the reports that the Broncos were sniffing around Romeo Crennel last month. Multiple folks said the Broncos were one of the teams in the Crennel derby.

Third, another former Patriots coordinator could be moving to the AFC West. The obvious link here is between Josh McDaniels and Dean Pees, who was the Patriots defensive coordinator until last week.

Interesting stuff here and, if you ask me, a good move by the Broncos.

Of course that's coming from a Chiefs fan. Who the heck wants a top 11 defense anyway?

I'd love to get Nolan as a position coach

but of course he’ll try for the DC job in Miami and Chicago first then perhaps see how the Bills job shakes out as he could be a candidate there if they hire Gailey.

But it sure seems like “mutual parting of ways due to a power struggle” is a nice way for McD to say, “I want my good buddy Dean Pees here as DC, not you.”

What is wrong with McDaniels????????

The Bronco’s D was pretty damn impressive this year? Did he show up late to a meeting or something? Somebody is going to kick J-Macs a** one of these days when he does or says something like Bill would say.

D-line coach for sure

and somewhat secondary coach. Pendergast was offered the chance to stay and coach the DBs which he did last year so they’re waiting to see what he says.

LBs coach Gary Gibbs is reportedly a candidate for the Dolphins DC job so that could be another opening as well.

Assistant OL coach is another opening and same with QB coach (unless Weis is taking the latter role)

Mike Nolan is not taking anything less than a DC position.

I don't think so either

I think its a long shot at best. Think if he doesn’t get a DC job, he might sit out a year or act as a consultant somewhere.

I have a buddy that is a huge broncos fan, and when their were reports that the broncos we’re interested in Crennel I told him and he thought I was taking Crazy pills!! This just assures how awesome this site is. I’d love to add him to staff always liked him especially when he was rocking the suit on the sidelines for the niners!

Nothing against Crennel

but part of me wishes they’d done this before Crennel was hired. I wouldn’t mind having Nolan here.

Agreed

Nolan did a good job with a not-particularly-talented D in Denver last year.

Can’t help but think that this is a personality thing between Nolan and McDaniels. Nolan’s got a reputation for being very abrasive and controlling.

i have no idea about Nolan's personality

However, sure seems like McDaniels doesn’t know how to handle things politically. This smells exactly like the Cutler thing to me.

I Don't Know About That

Nolan’s tenure with the 49ers got pretty ugly. Lot of sniping done (by him) towards players and grudges. He called Alex Smith lazy and gutless after Smith tried to play through a wrecked shoulder that eventually put him on IR and required reconstructive surgery. One of Nolan’s former players, Kevin Barlow, called him “Little Hitler”. He’s got a reputation as a coach who has trouble getting along with people.

then we don’t want this guy anyway. I think even you might agree that Haley is not anywhere near that kind of behavior.

Actually

Haley’s got a very similar personality to Nolan from what I’ve seen. The big difference between them though, IMO, is that Haley seems a bit smarter than Nolan (who did not come off like any kind of brainiac in the interviews I saw, although he always seemed to try to) but they both have pretty abysmal people skills and questionable game management ability as the head person (this might change, though, now that Haley’s not calling the plays and pulling triple duty).

I do agree that he’d be a poor fit for working with Haley as well. They both got into the NFL in similar ways (Nolan’s dad was a former 49ers HC), but Nolan had a lot more experience as a coach than Haley when he got his first shot as the head man and I think he’d chafe taking orders from Haley. And I doubt that the players would respond well to both a HC and a DC who were so similar in the manner in which they dealt with players…someone would need to be the good cop and that’s neither of them. Crennel is probably a better fit in that regard.

I hate the Chargers, Broncos, and Raiders the most, then every other team in the NFL. KC Chiefs are the team to watch out for in 2010.

How sweet is that....

no way they can maintain a high level of football with all these changes. Hopefully Marshall will be next. This is ridiculous, i would be livid if i was a bronco fan. First it was Orton, and now give away the best coach on the team…Maybe that was the problem, he dont like anyone better that him.

Sounds like us

With Chan Gailey – good coach, not a good fit with the Head Coach

"The way this works is you string together some good games, some good practices and you get momentum and you gain confidence," linebacker Mike Vrabel said. "It can be a real positive for your team. It builds on itself."

by cpa913 on Jan 18, 2010 6:08 PM CST reply actions

Probably

And in a situation like that, you’ve got to take the head coach’s side unless the head coach’s behavior is totally outrageous. Looks like the Dolphins are going after Nolan hot and heavy, though, so he’ll have a new job soon. Nobody seems to want him as a head coach, which is understandable after how he made a hash of things in San Fran. I get the impression he’s tempermentally unsuited to be a head coach.

I was thinking Pees as well

But don’t see how that would be an upgrade over Mike Nolan who is regarded as one of the better defensive minds in the game.

There has to be something deeper — I am guessing a personality conflict.

KC has had the best offseason thus far (and for the 2nd year in a row). The tides are turning….

I couldn't be happier for the Chiefs

who get to share a division with:

1. Al Davis/any coach willing to work with him
2. AJ Smith/Norv Turner/ w/e failed retread he scrapes up
3. Josh “I’m not a flakier version of Lane Kiffin I swear it” McDaniels

If that that triple play of awesomeness doesn’t amp you guys up for the next 5 years, I can’t imagine what will. Seriously. How lucky are we? Time to cash it in, Pioli. Davis can only be undead for so long (zombies die, too, right?), and AJ can only keep his job so long after firing enough mediocre coaches, right?

This is freaking golden.

What a stupid, stupid move. Nolan made their defense instantly better, and this is what he gets. Yeah Nolan sucks as a head coach, but as a defensive coordinator, hes among the best.

maybe the donkeys should look to get rid of McDaniels

he has no business being a hc, hes too young and inexperienced and he has proven that in less then 1 year. He should have just stayed in NE as oc for a few more years.

I think McDaniels has potential to be a really good HC

But he got the job too soon. Cassel has gone on record saying that McD was instrumental in his development, and he seems to have the type of personality to be a good head coach. If he’d remained as an Offensive Coordinator under hoodie for another 4-5 seasons he would hae been much better prepared. I honestly don’t know what Bowen was thinking with this move. As much as I dislike the Broncos franchise, it would really be a pity to see KCs two greatest rivals fall into an abyse.

Sorry J Man

While it is a good thing for us Chiefs fans, it has to hurt such a loyal fan of the Broncos. I don’t understand what they are doing and by looking at MHR, it seems no one knows what the HC is doing or is going to do. I feel for you J Man but it is a good thing (so far) for Chiefs fans.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

This Chiefs team is closer to a new expansion team than it is a playoff contender, your expectations should match that.

Denver is a nightmare.

McDaniels can’t seem to keep his dick in his pants. He screws with everything even when he already has it good.

I hope Chan gets the job in Buffalo and hires Nolan. They could actually put together a solid staff. Hopefully their ownership isn’t to cheap to get it done.

Wrong. It does the opposite. As written on MHR, Denver would have fired Nolan then if they were interested in Crennel. As it stands, there’s reason to believe the Denver DC job was meant to rebuild his coaching reputation after the SF fiasco: http://www.milehighreport.com/2010/1/18/1258266/broncos-mike-nolan-part-ways#29081880

I find it really ironic

that some people still scoff at coaches like Crennel and Weis because they think “it was all just Belichick” all along and that they are overrated. But, McDaniels seems to get excused from this same criticism. Of anyone, he’s the most relevant example of all. He’s someone that truly is unexperienced and would never have been hired to his position whatsoever except for having worked for Belichick. I don’t see how any experienced coach would want to work for the guy. Heck, I think it’s weird that he tries so hard to mimic Bill with his outfits. Just something immature going on there.

It's kind of a 2 edged sword though

I’d love for him to destroy Denver out of his own stupidity (or arrogance?). But, on the other hand, I used to always like that the AFC West was respected for being a tough as nails division. If the Chiefs become great but the Burros, Faiders, and Chargers all suck, they will get no respect.

Look at Seattle when they went to the SB from the NFC West (at that time).
