Where Would You Go?

I know there are numerous mock drafts and whatnot out there, but I wanted to get some views bounced back off of my perspective.  Bear with me.

First, let me say that I am of the opinion that the Youth Movement (YM) needs to end after the next draft.  You can’t build forever; at some point the future has to be now.  Of course, you always want to draft well, but let’s not make the mistake of thinking the entire team needs to be young at once (like a certain Herm Edwards who shall remain unnamed).

That being said, I am very curious about where the next high draft picks go.  Where do you want youth and the potential of long-term success?

In my opinion, we have the following players that are Young Guys* (YGs) on the team that have real long-term potential:  Dwayne Bowe, Jamaal Charles, Brandon Albert, Brandon Flowers, Tamba Hali, Dustin Colquitt, and Ryan Succop.

So, that gives us one YG in each of the following areas:  Wide Receiver, Running Back, O-Line, Cornerback, Linebacker, Punter, and Field Goal Kicker.

I’ll define hopefuls as Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson, Alex Magee (all D-Line), and Brandon Carr (Cornerback).

So if, like me, you think that the YM must end at some point, what positions do you target with the first three picks (one first-rounder and two second-rounders)?  Where do you want YGs as opposed to veterans?

I am gonna say the right side of the O-Line and Running Back (I know: Jamaal Charles.  But he is 199 lbs and has a shoulder that keeps popping out of place.  I’m not comfortable with him carrying the full load.)

Where do you guys think the YGs should go with our top three picks?  Where do you think veterans are a better fit?  And why?

*YGs are defined here as players drafted in or after Herm Edwards first draft.  If you want to go back another year, Derrick Johnson (LB) was the first-round pick in Dick Vermeil’s final draft with the Chiefs.

My take

McClain in 1st….
Nate Allen 2nd
Jerry Hughes 2nd

Jerry Hughes works behind Vrabel so our OLB will be set for years with Hali and Hughes. ILB will be set with McClain and DJ….safety would have Allen at FS and Brown at SS…a mix of young and old. The Dline would be very young….I say a veteran at NT to balance that out.

I don't think the Youth Movement should ever end

An NFL team should ALWAYS AND FOREVER be looking to add good young talent to the roster that they can teach, coach and prepare for a day when you need them to take over.

Agree

But if i was to pick where to tab youth in 2010 over a FA (experienced proven player) I would say O-line. The best teams always draft late but have few holes and can pick based on BPA rather than need. The Chiefs are almost there we have youngsters that are coming together and getting better at most every position. Some of those youbgsters are tremendous backups (to be) when the one is found to put them there. Pioli worked his Ass of this season. Haley (to me) and the coaching staff got what they could out of what they had, changing schemes, coaches, playbook, personnel, philosophy of the team in general. 4 WINS has to ba major accomplishment. The base is laid and we Squashed the Broncos. Already we have screwed the Broncos again (Crennel) and they have Shefler and Marshall wanting out. Norv served up another brain fart in SD, and Al lives in Oakland and can’t even figure out HOW to fire his coach.

youth is immediately successful...

at rb and lb. We see rookies and 2nd yr lb’s and rb’s showing immediate success. Nt, 3-4 de’s, wr, cb seem to need time to develop. Mcclain can play immediately and have an impact. Berry? Not sure if first yr safeties tend to have an impact. Rb? I would take one no earlier than 3rd round.

we always need to stay young

but i get what you are saying, rb’s are good young but we don’t need one in our first three picks. cb’s are also good young and we might end up needing one of those(I like Carr but not sure he is the answer) LB’s can be good young and we aren’t were we need to be at that position. After seeing our oline go from what it was to what showed up the last couple of years, i would never be angry with an early pick there. Nt is FA al the way, we have enough projects on the DL(and i think they are improving) WR we could use an early pick there.
Early picks i wouldn’t mind

defensive leader

we need a 3 down defensive quarterback. Whether it is Rolando McClain or Eric Berry I will be happy.
The Offensive line does need an upgrade at RG. I think with a bulldozer there and time to congeal as unit they will do fine as a zone blocking unit.
