Report: Former Chiefs OC Chan Gailey A Candidate for Bills Head Coach
Chan Gailey could possibly go from being terminated as the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator to head coach of the Buffalo Bills, according to Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News.
Gaughan writes Gailey has "emerged as a strong candidate" for the Bills job, citing team and league sources.
Gailey's name has been thrown around with a handful of jobs this offseason.
First, he was reportedly a candidate for the Houston Texans offensive coordinator job. Then he was rumored to be a package deal with Bill Cowher should he decide to return to the NFL. He's also been linked to the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator position.
Now, he may be a head coach.
The Bills were looking for someone with an offensive mind - Gailey fits the bill there - as well as prior head coaching experience, which he does.

Yeah that's what everyone has reported
But this Buffalo News report says not so.

Rooney Rule...?
Owners are making a joke out of this rule and are wasting Leslie Frazier’s time. He is a great offensive coordinator and more qualified than most of the goons being shopped for a HC position. Hopefully someone gives him a shot, soon. I like the guy.

+1
You nailed it. He’s had literally 6 interviews the last 2 years, not including the ones he’s turned down. I thought this rule was supposed to help Black coaches, not jerk them around. That really grinds my gears.

Except for the fact he is a Defensive coordinator, not offensive.

*DEFENSIVE* CORRDINATOR
My bad. Mistype :) Chan Gailey on the mind, too. Not too sure he would fare well as a HC again. Not really buying that.

Well
Being that he took Georgia Tech to a bowl game every single year he was HC and took the Cowboys to the playoffs both years as an NFL HC…..Naaa he won’t work as a HC.

and....?
What about his time with the Broncos? The Chiefs?
Sure he WAS good. His days as a winning HC is over. I’m sure he can stall make out to be a fine OC.

What??
He was with the Broncos in the 80’s!!!
And with the Chiefs he did very well withthe talent we had! He turned Bones into a decent option at QB.
Gailey was just a HC as recently as 2007.
You make no sense!

Actually Matt, you are wrong
In the 80’s Chan was maintaining a quaint bed and breakfast in Vermon with Larry, his brother Darryl and his other brother Daryl.

I Think He'll Be Fine
He only had two years at the helm of the Cowboys and did okay with an aging roster. And he did well enough with Georgia Tech. He’ll certainly be an upgrade over Jauron.

Defensive Coordinator, Actually
And I completely agree…the Rooney Rule is a joke and an insult. Frazier should have gotten a shot by now considering how well he’s performed as a DC since he took that over. And he’s had head coaching experience before in college, so it’s not like he’s not capable.

The Bills interviewed interim HC Perry Fewell which would have satisfied the Rooney Rule. Frazier’s interview was legit.

Whats wrong with the Bills?
Are they desperate or something? Will no one else go there? Are they turning into the Raiders?
Not much there
And the owner is perceived to be cheap, it’s small market…I still think it’s one of the best football towns in the country.
by Joel Thorman on Jan 18, 2010 4:11 PM CST up reply actions
Agreed
not to mention they cleaned out all of their coaches so whoever comes in is going to have to hire an entire staff…
Hail to the king, baby.
They normally do. Chan Gailey was kept for about 8 months. Todd Haley has a completely new staff going into 2010 than he had when he took over. Just took him a little longer.

as a bills fan, bless your heart.
i’d say its not that the owner is perceived as cheap as much as it is that the ownership situation is completely unstable. Coaches aren’t attracted to a situation where the best case scenario is that you deal with a meddling old man, and the worst case scenario is that he dies, the team gets sold, and the new owner picks up and moves it to LA, either firing you or forcing you to move 3,000 miles…
it’s just not attractive.
Jonathan Stupar won the Heisman…while playing in the NFL!
Won't that be wierd...
… when he brings the Bills to Arrowhead in 2010 to face the team of the Head Coach who fired him right before the beginning of last season!!!
Sometimes these stories just write themselves!
TD
I saw this
I had Leslie Frazier, Chan Gailey, Mike Tice, or Kevin Gilbride
Gilbride would have never happened since he fell on his face in Buffalo as OC early in the 2000s.

What about
Billick, Gruden, Phillip Fulmer former TN coach…
Plenty of qualified guys out there

gruden said no, Fullmer doesn't have any pro experience
as for why not Billick, I have no idea. He was said to be assembling a team of assistants, so he clearly wanted the job.
there were plenty of good options, but the ones the bills liked hated the bills, and then there were others, like Billick or Fassel or Haslett or Trestman, who just don’t seem to be on Buffalo’s radar.
Jonathan Stupar won the Heisman…while playing in the NFL!
they said that
chan is the “front runner” for the job now
FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reports that ex-Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has emerged as the frontrunner for the Bills’ head coaching vacancy.
Barring a breakdown, the hire is reportedly expected within 24-48 hours.
good for chan i hope he does well in buffalo

Breaking News
Mike Nolan out of DC in Denver. An apparent mutual parting of ways citing issues of control. Dean Pees anyone?
Really?!?!
What the hell is Denver doing?

I'm surprised as well
but my guess is he wants Dean Pees.
Giving us a gift?
I would love to have him on the staff…
He will more than likely be DC somewhere….Miami? He has Parcells ties with Al Groh…but he was the DC for the Jets in the Haley years.

I think he prefers a DC job
either in Miami or perhaps Chicago as he’s got 4-3 experience as well. I’d love to get him as a position coach.
Whatever you do Chan, good luck!
Matt Cassell will be a top 5 QB in 2010
Jamall Charles will be a top 2 RB in 2010
Chiefs defence will be a top 15 in 2010
I will be a Chiefs fan until the day I die
I love this site.
Lots of classy folks here. If you want to see some really depressed bloggers, look at Buffalo Rumblings Gailey thread!
Glad to hear you guys have some good things to say…
Go Bills! I mean 'stay' Bills...
This seems like a good move for Buffalo
Low profile coach, but has shown he can succeed under difficult conditions. I was telling a friend that is a Titans fan that Chan should replace the Dinger as OC, as it would probably be great for VY’s development.
Chan really got the shaft from the Chiefs this year. I have no doubt we would have been a stronger offensive team with him this year. Good luck to him.
