Should the D. Bowe Show go?

Stay connected for news and updates

Like most Chiefs fans, I do like D. Bowe.  His drops and occasional lapses in concentration are frustrating, but he seems to be a good guy, usually makes the clutch catches, and he's a young player who's arguabley the best receiver on the roster (certainly has the most upside).  But in reality he's also one of the few tradeable assets on the roster.  Dorsey, Flowers, Charles, Albert and a few others certainly ARE tradeable but they are also each an integral part of the team's foundation...and would therefore require an unreasonable price in return.

Bowe has shown enough promise that he could probably command a solid draft pick or two, but has been inconsistent enough that I could definitely see Pioli willing to let him go.  Pioli/Haley have already shown us that they intend to remake the team in their image, and given Bowe's inconsistency I'm not sure he fits that image. I'd hate to see him go, but you have to give up something to get something in return.

I think the most likely trading partners would be the Bengals, Ravens, Bears, Jets, Redskins or Cowboys.  All of those teams are in contention now (or in the case of the 'Skins, think of themselves as being in contention) and all are in desperate need for a good #1 or #2 receiver.  Those are the teams that would be willing to give up the most to get a guy to help out the passing game immediately.  I believe the Bucs, Jags, Bills, Browns and 'Phins are also looking for a receiver, but they are so far out of serious contention that any reasonable deal for Bowe would be unlikely.  The Pats may be interested as well, but I doubt they'd be willing to give away a reasonable draft pick or two.

As far as compensation, I'm probably biased in thinking that we should be able to get a Mid-to-late first round pick, along with a 2nd or 3rd (depending on how low the first rounder is) but that's how I feel.  It's sort-of a critical time to be trading him, after year three.  If he comes out inconsistent next season teams & we give up on him, teams are going to shy away from offering up much.  If he comes out and IS consistently good, KC will (rightly) not want to trade him away.  There's always a risk in moving/not moving a player like Bowe...I'm just wondering what others think about it.
