Keep or Cut: Kansas City Chiefs WR Bobby Wade

Bobby Wade was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs roster on September 15, 2009, just two days after KC's opening season loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Wade was  part of a handful of free agent wide receivers the Chiefs would sign in '09, including Amani Toomer, Bobby Engram, Ashley Lelie and Chris Chambers.

Wade never topped his first game as a Chief. Against the Raiders in Week 2, the former Minnesota Viking had 6 catches for 72 yards. He would never have as many catches or yards in a game the rest of the season.

My opinion of Bobby Wade is that he's an average receiver who will probably bounce around to a couple more teams before his career fizzles out. He doesn't have overwhelming speed; has issues with drops; and fought with Todd Haley on the sidelines during the Chiefs Week 13 game against the Broncos.

He's completely expendable, in my opinion. And judging by his erratic starting schedule over the season, Todd Haley doesn't think Wade is consistent enough to be a full-time starter. That said, I do think Wade fits in the Chiefs' plans as a #3 receiver at best. He's just not a starter.

Here are some recent quotes from AP commenters on Wade:

hmills10: "I don’t think Bobby Wade’s gonna wow anyone, but he becomes a pretty decent threat, if the protections get better."

Dagda: "There is nothing wrong with Bobby Wade as the 3rd wideout."

aasukisuki: "Glad to see Bobby Wade backHe’s easily become one of my favorite players on the team this year. I hope he finishes his career in KC."

I've put together some numbers on Wade's 2009 season and linked a few stories. It's all there, after the jump.

Star-divide

Here are some stats on Bobby Wade's '09 season:

  • 0 games started; played in 12 games
  • 36 receptions
  • 367 yards receiving
  • 2 TDs
  • Targeted 74 times
  • 9 drops

Here are some stories on Wade from this past year:

Cut Him

Hes too inconsistent and seemed to like to argue with Haley…

by tomahawk44 on Jan 13, 2010 8:01 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I say cut him

I don’t think he brings anything to the table that we don’t have or can be easily replaced. We already have 2 receivers that I think we can all agree are better than him (Bowe, Chambers) so at best he is a slot receiver.

For most offenses, a slot receiver is a possession/move the chains kind of guy; someone who doesn’t have to have blazing speed, but is quick and has great hands. I don’t think Bobby Wade has good enough hands to be a reliable slot receiver, and he is certainly not a big enough playmaker to justify the number of drops he has.

Even if we don’t draft a receiver early on (I’m hoping for Tate with our first 2nd rounder or Alexander in the 3rd), there are usually some decent possession type receivers in the mid rounds. I’d easily take a Gilyard, Shipley, or a similar player over Wade next season.

Shipley

I think would be a great slot WR …. He has great hands and is pretty smart

How the hell did that happen? I am Trailblazer fan to the core but I love me some OKC THunder!!! Must be the Hometown pride I feel.

Yeah, I voted keep as a backup

until we know that we can get an upgrade at the position at least.

by Supersport on Jan 13, 2010 8:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Except...

Shipley has been known to return kicks and punts on occasion (if fair catches are kept as a stat, Wade HAD TO have set the record this year). Plus I’d say he has better hands than Wade. I am a little concerned about his injury history however, which is why I listed Gilyard before him.

It depends on who they can bring in

Right now he’s probably the 3rd best receiver on the roster. Assuming they resign Chambers & Bowe doesn’t get traded, if they draft a receiver & bring in another via free agency I don’t think he has much of a chance to stay on the roster next season. I had higher expectations for him, but at this point it seems his best quality is the ability to not fumble punts.

Predictions:

Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010

Cut him

Not a good punt returner. Check.
Too many dropped passes. Check.
Argues with Head Coach on sidelines. Check.

Adios Bobby.

Good summary Scott

My thoughts exactly…..

Unless reworked contract cut him

paying him to much to be 5th or 6th WR and that is what he would be next year so if he wants to re sign a new contract for around 1 mill than cut him.

Meh.

He’s useful but expendable. I voted to “keep” but in reality…either option works. If he’s starting here, or anywhere, in 2010 that’s a bad sign for that offense.

it'll take 2 players

to replace him in my opinion. He’s probably our best return guy as well as one of our top 4 starting receivers. Putting themselves in a position where they can let Wade go should be a priority.

by ChiefsDude on Jan 13, 2010 8:46 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

All he ever does on punt return is fair catch, and too often inside the 10, which is just plain dumb. One of our biggest offseaseon priorities is to get a Punt returner, or have Lawrence develop into one.

by dablueguy on Jan 13, 2010 11:28 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

There are better options

Didn’t Wade make more than $3 million this past season? The Chiefs’ money could be much better spent on those players who could be real contributors next season – free agent acquisitions, drafting, perhaps even signing Hali and Flowers to extensions.

by MattL on Jan 13, 2010 8:46 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

+1 to the extensions

Hali certainly earned an extension this year. Flowers has played well too, but I’d let his rookie contract go for one more year.

bring him back.
make him go through the conditioning test then cut him.

by Kirk7 on Jan 13, 2010 9:31 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Cut him.

Receivers with hands of stone don’t deserve to play in the NFL. Bowe had better correct his problems in 2010 or he’s likely to find himself traded.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

"Shut the f--- up."- Matt Cassel
"WHAT THE F---?!?!"- Todd Haley

Cut Him

I voted to cut him but only because there wasn’t a voting option of “Cut Him Once We Find Someone Better”.

Because there HAS to be someone better.

But my question is this: why is it that guys signed off of the street have exceptional (for KC that is, as in, actually catching footballs thrown at them) games immediately upon signing with the team and then they just disappear? Chambers was the only receiver who seemed to continue to contribute after his first game. But not near the level he had in the first game.

Just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys.

by KCnDC on Jan 13, 2010 10:38 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I would cut him, he and samie parker can go hang out...honestly there are other options

we will bring in at least 2-3 new recievers via draft/FA…

I believe Bowe can get dealt…depends…

But Wade? Snip, Snip, Snip.

Haley is the right coach who just needs good people around him, much like Cassel
Vince Wilfork will be Scott Pioli's top offseason priority and will be a Chief.
KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson this offseason, and try to deal for Boldin

by SDChief on Jan 13, 2010 11:15 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

cut this guy Wade

Draft some speed receivers in the draft. We need to get younger at the receving core and need to add more talent no need to waste money on Wade. Bring Chambers back and let him and Bowe be the vets on the team receving core. We need more big play receivers and Wade doesn’t provide that.

by joed2001 on Jan 13, 2010 11:38 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Cut him!

We can find a rookie or a vet in the preseason to replace him. I’m hoping we get a wr/rb/cb that can return kicks.
