This Draft is setting up for the Chiefs
With every day bringing a new announcement from the college ranks, the Chiefs are in prime position at the top of the draft to fill most of our needs with some very good players. Safety, which was a relatively weak position with just the Senior class has now vaulted to prime position with the additions of Morgan Burnett (GaTech), Chad Jones (LSU), Major Wright (Florida) Earl Thomas (Texas) and Eric Berry (Tenn). Wide Receiver is deep as well with the addition of underclassmen Dez Bryant (OSU), Golden Tate (ND), Damien Williams (USC), Demaryius Thomas (GaTech), Dezmon Briscoe (KU) and Arrelious Benn (Illinois). While not as many Junior Offensive Linemen jumped, the ones who did are 1st / 2nd round prospects Brian Bulaga (Iowa), Anthony Davis (Rutgers), Bruce Campbell (Maryland).
This is outstanding news for our Chiefs on two fronts. First, at #5 we should be able to select the top prospect in one of our categories of need (Safety, WR, Oline, Linebacker, NT). Second, with all of these additions some of the players who were expected to go in the first round will fall to the top of the second. In essence, the Chiefs will have the equivelant of two first round picks. A guy like Terrance Cody might drop to the second round because of the increase in first round talent coming in from the underclassmen.
While the Draft is usually a "crapshoot" with some higher picks flaming out and the "steals" of the draft coming later. This draft is gaining some depth that could really make it something special. I love this paragraph from the folks over at Draft Headquarters:
The 2010 NFL Draft is shaping up to be one of the best in the history of the NFL. The amount of underclassmen that are entering the draft is rising very quickly with still a week left for them to declare. With a possible lockout and rookie wage scale looming, many players in college are under the impression that they need to get what they can while they still can. The depth at some of the positions (wide receiver, offensive tackle, defensive tackle, safety) is something that I haven’t since I started officially scouting since 2007. This is going to be a very fun four months as we get ready for the draft.
We've already started the year strong with the win over Denver and hiring Charlie Weis. Add Romeo to the mix and this should calm some of the concerns that potential Free Agents (the ones that will actually hit the market) might have. Then we can hope that Pioli can work some magic in the draft and the Chiefs turnaround might not be as far off as it seemed when we were praying we would beat Washington.

agreed ... with all the players available this year, thee's no excuse in the world for Pioli NOT to make this a good draft
we have so many needs even Pioli should be able to find a couple of three decent players that should be able to step in and offer immediate help … along with a few key FA’s and FAR better coaching (thank you, thank you, thank you! no more Todd Haley as OC!!!) we should see definite improvement next year
hi, Mo!

Man, you should really give it a rest, all this hatered for Pioli/ Haley is getting old.

Did Pioli see this coming when he jumped ship on New England?
Better did Clark Hunt see a need for a “Pioli” to lead this team based on the NFL landscape fast approaching.
Or did he see an old “New England” team that Belichek was going to have to salvage on his own?

I like Clark, nice guy, but I doubt he's that "forward thinking" and "football business savvy" yet

Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
Clark Hunt is good friends with Robert Kraft's sons.
And Hunt has said in interviews that he wants the Chiefs to be like the Steelers.

things are lining up well…
the 5th pick COULD be a trade down scenario (like last year)
interior OL, arguably the biggest need for KC, look to be very deep, into the 4th or 5th round, maybe
the teams above KC may be going heavy on the DL and OL… the teams below KC may be looking at QBs (again, see trade down)
QB could be the thinnest position of the draft, with only 2-3 key guys (again, see trade down scenarios)

With the turnover in HC's already there are going to be QB hunting GM's out there

It's an amazing thing, but Al Davis is running the Raiders so far into the ground he can't get people to take that coaching job.
If your aspire to be a head coach in the NFL, there are only 32 such jobs in the world, must of which are filled at any given time. On a year with a lot of turnover, there might only be 8 or 9 openings. When Al Davis hired Lane Kiffen it was because nobody would take the job. If memory serves me, Al Saudners was one of the people who turned him down. Davis had to go with a college coordinator that had never been a head coach at any level. And then he fired Kiffen and tried to withold money he owed to Kiffen. Why in the hell would anybody even consider working for the Raiders until Davis dies?

money, honey ... HCs get a very nice salary to go along with the headaches ...
… and if a HC is fired before contract is up, he gets that (or much of it) anyway … not a terribly bad deal overall
then too, it helps the resume (survived one season with Raiders) … has to count for something

This draft will go one of two ways
Weis will get an OT at #5 and Crennel will get a safety and NT/linebacker at 2a and 2b respectively
Crennel will get a NT/ILB/SS at #5 and Weis will get an OT/WR and Interior Lieman/ WR at 2a and 2b respectively

I think the second option
is best.

having two relatively early seconds and an early first is a good way to lure in good coordinators

Agree to agree
But Romeo gets his NT in FA and his Mike/FS in 1st.
Weis gets his WR/RB and O-lineman in 2nd

I'm with Steve... that's (almost) the best case scenario
My vote is
Trade down… STILL get Mike/FS in 1st, WR and OL in 2nd…
AND have extra picks to grab BPA in a deep draft

Trading down
I’m usually not a big fan of trading down, because it’s not that exciting, but with all the talent that will be in the draft. To add a couple of extra picks is what we need. We all agree this team needs more talent.
McClain just officially declared today as well
Which is also good news. KC wouldn’t have had a shot at him next year, IMO.

The Chiefs are in an excellent position in the draft
If they sit, likely they will have an excellent top 10 prospect in an area of need: Safety, ILB or OL. I think that Berry, McClain or Okung would each contribute right away, and I think at least one of them will be there.
If they trade down, they might not have to drop too far (i.e., stay in the top half of the draft), and get more picks in later rounds, make a big difference in the team’s talent level in a couple of years as the later-round prospects begin to contribute.
With just average luck I doubt that the Chiefs will be in the top 10 for the 2011 draft, so better maximize what they’ve got right now.
This is why...
we need to get as many draft picks as humanly possible. I think the Texans would make a good trade down partner if Berry falls to us at 5. If he does that means Claussen and Bradford are probably off the board meaning a QB trade down is unlikely. I find a QB trade down unlikely anyway.
But, if we go from 5 to 20 it would mean their 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and a 2011 2nd rounder. The reason why I think the Texans might do this is because they are desperate at this point to make the playoffs considering they have never been.
The 4th round is going to be really juicy, its like an extension of the 3rd round this year. That is why we need to try and a get a 4th for DJ and Page. We don’t need but one or two free agents in my opinion. This draft plus our new coaching staff will be enough to turn things around if we can get enough picks.
I think also NE will not consider signing Wilfork to a long term deal. So I think they might be interested in a 2011 2nd and 3rd.
The Texans scenario would be great
but I don’t think they’d do it…at least not at the price you are asking. This draft is supposedly very deep at Safety. If I’m the Texans, I’d keep my draft picks & try to go after Earl Thomas.
Predictions:
Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010
Not likely Houston would do it
But I could imagine scoring some nice players with that series of picks.
1.20 – Earl Thomas, FS, Texas
2a – Sean Weatherspoon, SLB/LILB, Missouri
2b – Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas
2c – Torrell Troup, NT, UCF
3 – JD Walton, C, Baylor
From there, fill out on corner, OL, and possibly LB, or whatever player represents the best value.

You...
really have Troup going that high? Just curious I wanted us to get him in the 5th.
by I_Bleed_Red. on Jan 12, 2010 2:53 PM CST up reply actions
I think he'll be this year's Brace
He’s a powerful player with a low center of gravity at a position where that and his size are at a premium. There aren’t many guys like that this year. I see Cody, Dan Williams, and then Troup. No others are really coming to mind at this point, and I think the big reason Troup hasn’t been rated more highly in the past is because he plays at UCF. If he’s as decent as I think he is, he’ll catch some eyeballs at the post-season workouts.
Anyway, if I’ve learned anything from the most common oversimplification of the precepts of capitalism, it’s that reduced supply increases a commodity’s value. Hence my rating of Troup in the late-2nd. I think he could go in the third or fourth, sure, but this wouldn’t be a monumental reach.

I see the Chiefs
Trading down in draft position but not out of the top 20 in exchange for more picks in later rounds.
is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?
This Chiefs team is closer to a new expansion team than it is a playoff contender, your expectations should match that.
If you say is right and I believe you are Scott might have a hay day.
Not only he might trade down in the first but even in the second and third. For many reasons FA is not going to be good for the CHIEFS, which makes this draft very important.
gordymule
I didnt think of that!
Interesting, we have two 2nd round picks so we could trade out of the 2nd round and add a 3rd and a 5th? hmmm/

Berry or trade down
I really like Berry. I think he will be gone. I don’t want to be like last year and pay a lot of money for a top pick and he does not earn his money. I say trade down.
I don't know guys
I’m torn on this draft…… and that makes it fun.
I’m all in favor of trading down but wheeling/dealing picks in the top 5 isn’t the easiest. Save the huge signing bonuses, get a solid solid player and more picks… People will be there later. And most teams know that.
But is Houston the only team that may trade up with us? What if one of those QBs is available? What if Bradford is there? Will anyone reach for him? Or Claussen? Interesting, very interesting… and like you guys say, it’s setting up VERY nicely for us with those 2nd round picks…

Trade options influenced by context?
For some reason, I always seem to think that it makes sense to trade down. Especially this year, with a combination of the Chiefs multitude of needs, and the fact that I believe in Pioli’s drafting sensibilities more than Peterson’s (specifically, I think he has a much stronger melding of draft strategy with football philosophy).
But I’m curious why so many draft trade discussions are made in such an insulated context. I like your thinking, where you consider the options that open up if Bradford is still available. I think that kind of situation is much more important than just throwing out “this for that”.
After KC, it’s Seattle, Cleveland, then Oakland. I could make a case for all of those teams wanting a QB this year. And I think a QB is one of the few positions teams would consider trading up to #5 to acquire. I would think any potential trading partners would have a ridiculously complex multi-dimensional matrix that included who they reeeealy want, and who is in position to take that guy ahead of them.
Unless it’s Al Davis, where the matrix boils down to “if 40-time < 4.5 then draft”.
I'd be ok with...
traded that late 2nd rounder for an extra 3rd and a 5th. Then we’d have four 5ths? Use two of those 5ths to trade up into the 4th and that would give us two 3rds, two 4ths and two 5ths. Got it? me neither.
Mr J

So
I wouldn’t give up a 2nd rounder for additional later round picks. I think Buafflo is a prime trading partner. They need a QB, when was their last decent QB? We could add a high 2nd rounder and still grab McClain
agreed
Seattle, Cleveland, Oakland, Buffalo could all be considering QBs…
Among those, Seattle and Buffalo could be the most likely to take a QB this year
since Seattle picks right after KC, Buffalo does make the most sense.
Not sure if McClain lasts to the #9 pick, though… but it’ll be interesting, and probably worth the risk

yeah, I've seen a lot of mocks with McClain going to the Donkeys
they could also take a NT, OL or WR

i wouldnt be suprised by the donkeys taking
either a wr or a qb with their 1st pick. everyone knows that Orton isnt McDaniels qb and hes going to want a high flying high scoring offense like he left in NE, so they very easily could take a qb and wr with their 1st 2 picks this year.
