Quick question for some here on AP. On the last play of the Cards vs. Packers game, Rodgers was facemasked after the ball was loose. I have read that the ref is supposed to watch for possession and not watch the quarterback after a fumble takes place.
My question is, if this had been during the game and not in OT would there have been a flag that would have been assessed on the kickoff.
Basically, I am asking if the reason for the no call is that it happened after the ball had been knocked loose and is therefore applied to the next play?

Nope
Flag shoulda been thrown, stopping the play. 15 yard penalty on Arizona, Green Bay with the ball and a first down.
Thanks Joel
That sucks for GB because it was one hell of a game. Rodgers definetly matured sitting on the bench and has shown that may be the best way to groom a QB. He is phenomenal!
Is this appropriate for a fan shot?

Thanks
Didn’t want to get ripped for creating a fanpost that has no business being one.
I hate when great fanposts are gone within a day because of 7 mock draft and FA posts!

Penelty would not "stop the play"
just as any other penalty doesn’t stop play i.e. holding, pass interference. The only time it stops a play is when it happens prior to the play starting. I think KC4 is right. The only question is does it effect possession of the ball. If it doesn’t I would think it would be Cards ball with 15 yards tacked on from the spot of fowl or fumble recovery and negating the TD.
It doesnt "stop" the play.
But it does take into consideration whether the penalty occured before change of possesion. Its like if you threw an interception but there was defensive holding before the throw/completion the defense doesnt keep the ball.

I was under the impression thet
there was a holding call, before the facemask thats yet another reason it wasnt called

You would think
that they would at least throw the flags and then explain that they offset.
This was really confusing to watch and I’d be pissed if I was a GB fan for the lack of explanation from the league

If they offset it would be replayed down and no possesion change.

+1
You are 100% right. The major penalty happened before change of possesion and I’m sure we’ll see an apology from the league sometime this week.

The Ref
is responsible for both calls, he has to watch the ball but he’s still there to protect the QB, it was unfortunate but it happens. The play before that should have been called too, the helmet to helmet on Rodgers was obvious, but again the ref was busy calling holding.
Regardless
The refs cant see EVERYTHING….during the last play, im sure the ref was looking at the ball that got knocked out before the facemask occured. Then of course looking at Dansby intercepting it and taking off. Facemacking is not a reviewable play so….same thing on the helmet to helmet hit….ref was looking at the obvious hold and not at Rodgers. The hold was actually a tackle…the o-lineman had the guy around the ankle
Hypothetically
Suppose it had been reviewed in the booth say to check if it was truly a fumble recovery or an incomplete pass and they had then spotted all this facemask stuff, could they have then called the penalties? My understanding is probably not.
Blame my wife!
Waiting until August 2010
I'm not sure if they ever said
If it was a fumble or an interception.
Just a crazy way to end one of the most exciting NFL games I’ve ever watched
