One of the Chiefs' tougher roster decisions this offseason is likely to be LB Derrick Johnson. While it appeared earlier in the year that the team was ready to let him walk in free agency after demoting him, he grew on the coaching staff more as the season progressed and finished the 2009 campaign with a bang, returning two interceptions for TDs in Week 17. It's likely that Johnson would want to stay in K.C. only if he were put back in the starting lineup.

Yes, an impact player
but not an every down LB. Fantastic coverage LB who can rush the passer at an acceptable level, but sucks at run stopping because he’d rather go around blockers then take them on and then make the play. That was the knock on him coming out of college, and that evaluation still holds true.
The Kansas City Chief's 2009 record will be 5-11.
Close, but no cigar. I can live with that.
Absolutely bring him back
He’d be a terrific holdover, I think best at RILB.

I dunno...
If DJ can find it in himself to show up for more than three or four games a year, I’d be all for seeing him as a starter again.

It's a lot easier to "show up," I think, when both of the two following things happens:
1. The coach plays him at the right position. This didn’t happen often enough pre-Haley. DJ is a natural will, not sam, when playing in the 4-3. Of course, Gunther claimed his defense didn’t differentiate between the will and sam, but I don’t think that’s really true. Look at how he employed Edwards as opposed to, say, DT.
2. The coach plays him more snaps than can be counted on one hand. Hyperbole, yes, but Haley really didn’t get DJ many chances this season.

If he is not going to be an every down LB,
this i think we could put at 1st or 2nd round tender and take our chance. I really like his coverage skills, and the big play (every once in a while). But his Run D is woeful. I guess better play at NT would be the answer. I don’t know, I think maybe with a first round tender, we could attract some later picks attention. With that said, maybe not, I heard once that they expect this to be a good draft. So maybe second? What do you guys think?
