Looking back since we can't fast forward to Sunday
Okay, so Herm wasn't the best of coaches. And maybe he set us back quite a bit instead of making us the balanced team we hoped for. But with his youth movement, he did bring in lots of new players via the draft. After the jump I've listed the players drafted by Herm. Who do you think were the best players he drafted? And after looking at this list, how would you rate his drafting ability?
2006
Tamba Hali,Bernard Pollard, Brodie Croyle, Marcus Maxey, Tre Stallings, Jeff Webb, Jarrad Page
Not too bad...Pollard and Page are/will be NFL starters but may never reach All-Pro status. Croyle is a serviceable backup. Hali still hasn't proven to be worthy of a first round pick, but this preseason is making me cautiously optomistic.
2007
Dwayne Bowe, Turk McBride, Tank Tyler, Kolby Smith, Justin Medlock, Herb Taylor, Michael Allan
Bowe is going to be a stud...everyone else, the verdict is still out. I certainly hope McBride pans out but we'll see.
2008
Glenn Dorsey, Branden Albert, Brandon Flowers, Jamaal Charles, Brad Cottam, DaJuan Morgan, Will Franklin, Brandon Carr, Barry Richardson, Kevin Robinson, Brian Johnston, Mike Merritt
Lots of picks, lots of hits, lots of misses. It's kinda surprising that we seem to know more of what we're getting from our 2008 picks than our 2007 picks. Dorsey is looking solid this preseason at end, Albert is Albert, Flowers, MOrgan, and Carr are top notch. Richardson, Cottam, Merritt are flops.
So, who were the best Herm picks? I'm going with Albert (1), Bowe (2), and Flowers (3).
And to make the discussion even more interesting, do you think your feelings will be the same at the end of the season? I'm thinking Albert will still be my number 1, Bowe my number 2, and Dorsey my number 3. But perhaps that's wishful thinking due the the cash he's making.

if dorsey pans out we are in business man are we in business the guy needs to be a beast

I really hope that the front 3 and their backups
make this 3-4 go. Dorsey, Tyler, Jackson and Mcgee, Edwards, Gilberry. will make or break this D

My take
Good picks: Bowe, Albert, Flowers, Charles, Carr
Mabies: Tamba, Dorsey
I am sure there will be others that step up; we’ll see.
But with 26 total draft picks in his three years, to have 5 as “good” and 2 as “maybe”? And drafting/defense were supposed to be his strong points? (Don’t even get me started on the D.)
On average: C-
With all the hype about his “great eye for talent”: F

3 drafts - 26 picks
1’s must be starters
2-3’s must be productive players
4-7’s are crapshoots
4 – #1s 4 starters grade A
2 – #2-3 productive players grade F 33% is failing
Agreed F

I'd say
Albert: hell of a pick, especially considering he was RT or LG in college, unless I’m mistaken
Bowe: gonna be great if he can be consistent
Charles: might really turn out to be something special; someone opp team has to really plan for
Flowers: gonna be great, corner"s a hell of a hard pos to excell as a rookie, but he mostly did
Carr: not bad at all
Tamba: looking soooo much better in a two point stance, might be pretty damn good defender
Dorsey: played a damn hard pos for a rookie and wasn’t terrible; will get better this year and next
Morgan and K Smith: might really turn into something in the future for us who knows
Page and Brodie: both serviceable and I’m ok with them, Croyle specially as backup

after hoping in my '85 delorean....
i have found that all the guys that have stepped up are gonna be gamers for awhile….and tank will show his worth this year.

Pretty average drafting if you ask me.
Seems like par for the NFL.
The problem is, we don’t have many veterans anymore so, we had to rely on these guys right away

2008 looks pretty darn good
the other years, meh, except D-Bowe, and maybe Tank or Turk step up this year!

My Take
Hali looks to shine; Croyle definitely serviceable with a good toolbox; Page proving valid; Bowe coming into his own; Hopeful for Turk; Praying for Tank at NT; Kolby is pretty damn good when he’s not injured; Dorsey needs to step it up but has skillz; Albert is dominant; Flowers owns the CB position and will only get better; Charles looks to be the real deal if he can hold on to the ball; Morgan is looking better by the day; Carr is going to be a solid to create the CB tandem OC’s will learn to fear; and Cottam hasn’t had enough time to shine and if given every opportunity this season, may also prove serviceable. In all fairness, I just don’t see how you can call Cottam a flop at this stage in the game. Overall, I’d give Herm a B+ for giving us some highly talented folks and some brass to polish, but that may end up shining. Others, well, you just can’t polish a turd…
Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce
