Quarterback Play

I have a feeling this game is going to be based on the play of our quarterbacks. Whether that be Cassel or (Croyle, Thigpen this is consisent with the people who believe that this is going to be a defensive game) Because I’m going to step out on a limb and say we will see a Chief Defense that will look like a top rated defense both defending in the pass and the run

You know that typical situation where which ever quarterback has the best third down conversion rate, and takes care of the ball (minimizing turnovers) will lift their team to victory.

My first question is “How good is Joe Flacco”? Was last year some contributed to how well he is or how well the coaching staff catered to his abilities.

Also how will Baltimore’s D hold up without Rex Ryan, Jim Leonard and Bart Scott?

What has the organization done to patch these up?

Haley told the offense to run it again. When someone said the defense already knows the play he responded, "So what, make it work."

by Jay Cotton on Sep 9, 2009 8:41 AM CDT reply actions

For some reason, most Ravens fans

would rather face Cassel than Thigpen. Tyler looks like he moved the team in the air pretty decently late last season and knows the team better than Cassel. If Cassel is still hurting, he may be more susceptible to our pressure and toss a couple of picks. Meanwhile, Flacco has been lights out (sorry Merriman!) in pre-season and while that means nothing in terms of wins/losses, his full year of experience plus the entire off seaosn to prepare as the starter, compared to being thrust into the role late in pre-season last year, has shown a huge progression. He just has a rocket arm and a calm demeanor that fits the NFL and position so classicly. O-Coordinator Cam Cameron has taken the reins off of him and we threw much more than ran this pre0pseason to give him even more reps.

As far as the defense, the loss of our D-Coordinator will make as meaningless a difference as it did when we lost Marvin Lewis and Mike Nolan to head coaching positions that they have not succeeded in since they, along with Bart Scott and Jim Leonhard, left the shadow of Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and company.

Dawan Landry is back at safety for the Ravens and while little Jimmy Leonhard had a decent season, he is nowhere near the thumper that the beast Landry is. Tavares Gooden will be the next great linebacker next to Ray Lewis following Scott, Adalius Thomas, Edgerton Hartwell and Jamie Sharper.

Ray Lewis and company.

How much does Ray still have in the tank, especially after losing some key components this off season.

by Helmets on Sep 9, 2009 9:13 AM CDT reply actions

I think we have to wait to find out. Obviously Ray is past his prime, but its hard to tell how effective he’ll be without actually watching how effective he’ll be.

I dont doubt the Ravens Defensive ability but I dont expect to see the defense that led them to the SuperBowl. That leaves me enough hope that the Chiefs can compete hard enough to WIN

You can join most everyone outside of Baltimore

in saying Lewis is past his prime, but he still prepares himself and the rest of the defense, much less the entire team, better than any other player or team in the league, which should not be underestimated. Ask any new Raven who comes here, and they say they never prepared for a game like they do here in Baltimore. He is such a great student and watcher of tape that his loss of speed is made up by positioning and knowledge of what the opponents are going to do before they do it and he is still as quick sideline to sideline as any ILB in the league. Watch him closely this Sunday and you will see how he psychs up the fans and is the best to ever play the game at his position.

How has Mason looked?

Our top CB Brandon Flowers seems to be set for a break out year. He is reportedly super fast this year.

Should be a good battle of youth and speed vs. veteran smarts.

D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.

by Patrick Allen on Sep 9, 2009 9:54 AM CDT reply actions

Mason is not given the respect he deserves

by the media and fans. The CB’s know he is as tough a possession receiver as there is in the league. Did you know thqt other than Brandon Marshall, Reggie Wayne and Larry Fitzgerald, NO ONE in the NFL caught more passes than Mason over the past two years!?

He might not be the game breaker that the other guys are, but he is a great route runner and has incredible hands and moves the chains. He is healthy and looking great and wants to go out with a ring.

Great questions from a great blog site. Keep ’em coming!

I love Mason

I draft him for my fantasy team every year. He tends to not put up huge numbers but he is always solid. I can always count on him for a decent day.

I imagine it is the same for the Ravens.

How's the home field advantage for Baltimore?

I think it’s pretty well known that Arrowhead is one of the toughest places to play for opponents (when KC is actually good) due to the crowd noise. Can we expect the crowd there to make it tough on audibles for KC?

by jmcgoblue on Sep 9, 2009 10:02 AM CDT reply actions

Glad to have you here for this Bruce.

How is your O Line looking this year? Will be be able to get pressure on the your QB? Will they make some decent running lanes for Ray Rice and Co.? Our run D has looked good this preseason, and we’re getting decent pressure on the QB.

Cry Havoc! And let slip the Chiefs Defense of War!!!

by nateforchiefs on Sep 9, 2009 10:03 AM CDT reply actions

Our offensive line should be better

this year, with another year of experience for the younger kids. Plus we added Matt Birk at center to replace Jason Brown who wet to the Rams for ridiculous bucks. Birk may be older but he is a 6-time Pro Bowler used to fighting off the Williams’ twins in practice at Minnesota and the trenches of the NFC North.

LT Jared Gaither is only 23 years old but this is his 3rd year in th eleague and 2nd starting. He is a massive human at 6’9" and 340 pounds. Of course, we just added our #1 draft pick, Michael Oher, the kid they wrote the book about and the movie is coming out in November (‘The Blind Side’). Oher is 6’4" 310 pounds with no belly fat and is in great shape and has preformed super on the right side.

Our issue is not with the starters as they should be among the best o-line in the league opening up huge holes for our three-headed running attack. It’s our depth which has the Ravens, media and fans a little nervous.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 9, 2009 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Great question - and relevant

I was on vacation and read Michael Lewis’ (Moneyball author) book on Oher and after finishing it, I said, “there’s no way the Ravens drafted this kid to be the right tackle.” they’re comparing him to Orlando Pace and if so, then I could see the Ravens letting huge LT Jared Gaither walking when he comes up for a huge payday in the next year or two. They move Oher over there to the left side for the next ten years or so and then go find another RT.

Ravens in-game adjustments

Welcome, Bruce. How’s Harbaugh and staff at making mid-game adjustments? Do they typically do better in the second half? I think it’s particularly relevant for this first game against the Chiefs where very little is known. As far as defensive adjustments, would it be fair to say that Ray is the on-field coach, and helps others make changes while on the field?

by sunny D on Sep 9, 2009 2:22 PM CDT reply actions

Very fair to say that.

We might make in-game adjustments but more than likely they’re part of the gameplan. For instance, expect to get a healthy dose of Ray Rice most of the game but when we’re up in the late-third and fourth quarter, expect a lot more of McGahee and McClain to wear down the defense. Tough bringing down a 230 and 250 pound back time after time, as we usually run so much we control time of possession which wears down defenses.

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 9, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the Chiefs will force Flacco to pass.

Ball control might equate with 3-and-out, which isn’t going to tire out the KC D, which, for the first time in quite a while, is 2-deep in quality players across the d-front. I don’t think they’ll tire easily, and I think they’ll rotate guys in and out, pretty much at will.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by E.C. on Sep 9, 2009 4:26 PM CDT reply actions

Kickoff ocverage team is okay, but not spectacular

punt coverage is better. Return game on both kickoffs and punts should be improved witht he free agent addition of former Titan Chris Carr. Carr took Tennessee’s return game from #26 to #1 in the NFL last year, so expect him to improve ours as well, although to think we’ll go to #1 is a stretch. Our kicker has a stronger leg than the legendary Matt Stover, but accuracy for a second year kicker and first time as the man, will be there for all to judge.

with or without

the 10.5 point spread? Point of fact, we are going to win 16 – 13 but footballs have 2 pointy ends & are known to take some strange bounces, so one never knows! You are giving us the points aren’t you?! :)

by ttownmikey on Sep 9, 2009 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

How can they cover a 13 point spread?

It will be a challenge for them to put up 20, even with Al Saunders helping them out. Cheifs should be good for at least a Ryan Succup FG every Quarter, and they seem to have a habit of making the pick-6. OK, that’s only 18, but that point spread is ridiculous!

What if Cassel actually plays and we score a couple of TDs? Then what of your great point spread?

by cpa913 on Sep 9, 2009 10:47 PM CDT up reply actions

If Cassel plays

then we will beat them worse than my 16 – 13 prediction, beyond that I’m having a hard time understanding your post. Last I knew, the Vegas oddsmakers were putting us as 10.5 point underdogs, hence the great point spread!

Negative Ghost Rider the pattern is full...

by cpa913 on Sep 9, 2009 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Its something that those with

the ability to, should take advantage of. I look for the spread to possibly even get larger as more & more money goes on the Ravens because those who just look at the box scores & last years records haven’t seen what we have seen! The Chiefs look vastly improved from last year & now that the real season is about to begin, I believe that both Haley & Pendergast are going to keep our opponents on their heels, totally reeling & constantly guessing wrong on what we are going to do next!

by ttownmikey on Sep 10, 2009 12:02 AM CDT up reply actions

It is a ridiculous spread for week #1

But the oddsmakers always seem to know what to put on the games. I’d be tempted to put bucks down on the Chiefs for such a big spread but knowing my ravens at home,…well, I don’t know about that.

Either way, I’ll gladly take a one point win, wouldn’t you?

aka 'Rexx'

by Bruce Raffel on Sep 10, 2009 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Still a lot of questions, ttownmikey.

The D looks more disciplined and aggressive, at the same time. More like my idea of Chiefs football, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Dave Adolph moved on.

Now’s probably a good time to cash in if you’re a Chiefs fan, because that’s a HUGE spread.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

Suggs has a non-stop motor

but Ray hits harder still, as he knows tackling and leverage. However, Suggs will always get more sacks so your QB better find T-Sizzle when he goes backto pass. Also, Suggs plays against the right side of your o-line, which is the weaker pass blocking link, right? Ouch.

Its funny Ravens fans think so highly of Thigpen...

Even if its true that Thiggy would be more dangerous against the Ravens D we don’t have a O coordinator who knows how to use him. Now that we are running a more traditional offense Cassel is the man and makes the Chiefs offense as dangerous as it is going to get (which is still probably average, but we take what we can get).

Trust me, starting Thigpen would be giving a win away. Cassel is the best QB on that team by FAR.

I love my Chiefs but predicting a win IN Baltimore is a little bit crazy. I of course hope to god I’m wrong! :-)

how do you see the breakdown for carries between mcgahee, rice, and mclain?

by paxi on Sep 11, 2009 7:08 PM CDT reply actions

That's why I didn't take any of them in my fantasy league

(but no Chiefs either).
Rice will be the breakout star of the three. Willis will get a bunch of carries later in the game but will be a pretty weak play. I wouldn’t be surprised to see McClain still get the bulk of the goal line carries and rack up the TD’s though.

Skip them and take the Ravens team defense (and play them Sunday!).
