Complete Recap of the Chiefs Cutdown Weekend
If you ever take a look at Arrowhead Pride's traffic, folks are piling in from about 8:00 AM -6:00 PM, with a dropoff in numbers before and after that. In other words, you all like wasting time at work. We're glad you all make us your official avoiding-work-blog-of-choice.
Anyway, if you need to catch up on all the news that happened over the weekend, you'll find everything you need to know after the jump.
And if you don't come to Arrowhead Pride on the weekends, you need to begin to do that this week. All the joy of Arrowhead Pride without fear of your boss looking over your cubicle. It's nice.
Previewing cut day and some predictions
Don't listen to me if you're making a bet because it probably won't help you. One day before the Chiefs were required to release 22 players, I made three bold predictions
- Damion McIntosh will stay
- Zach Thomas will be released
- DaJuan Morgan or Mike Brown will be released
Right: Zach Thomas was released
Wrong: McIntosh was actually released and both Morgan and Brown stayed
***
The Chiefs release eight players, including Damion McIntosh
***
A look at the offensive line following the cuts
***
Rumors surface the Chiefs are shopping Bernard Pollard
UCrawford's on the story:
I can understand souring on a player, but does Haley think Brown's got five or six more years in him like Pollard may have? Extremely doubtful. And what are the odds Brown actually plays a full season for this team? He hasn't played 16 games since 2003 and he wasn't particularly impressive in the 15 games he played last season. I was happy the Chiefs signed the guy...as a possible reserve...but to be the starter?
***
I argue that the quarterbacks and secondary are the biggest unknown as we wait for the final 14 cuts to be made.
On the QBs:
My best guess: Gutierrez is cut, Thigpen remains.
On the safeties:
My best guess: Chiefs keep four cornerbacks (Carr, Leggett, Flowers and Washington) and five safeties (Page, McGraw, Pollard, Brown and Morgan).
Wrong on both accounts.
***
There's some momentum for the Chiefs keeping four quarterbacks
Why?
1) Matt Cassel may not be ready to play or completely healthy by week one leaving only two quarterbacks against last year's No. 2 overall defense
2) His possible replacement, Brodie Croyle, has a track record of injury
3) A scenario in which Cassel doesn't play, Croyle gets hurt and one quarterback remains is far too possible (and, to some, likely)

The Chiefs made a call to former Super Bowl hero and NY Giants receiver David Tyree
The Chiefs have called Tyree's agent, Mark Clouser, to inquire about the former Giant. The Baltimore Ravens have also expressed a "serious interest" in Tyree according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times.
***
Word comes out early that UDFA LBs Pierre Walters and Jovan Belcher will make the 53 man roster
Here's how the LBs are starting to shake out (but they didn't end this way!)
***
We're waiting for the cuts to come
The cuts were supposed to come at 5:00 PM but they were delayed. Josh Looney was live blogging the event. This thread is pretty entertaining as we all wait for it to happen...
***
The rest of the Chiefs cuts; Bernard Pollard is the headliner
***
VIDEO: For one final time, Bernard Pollard: 'This is how we do it in Fort Wayne'
Some reminiscing.
***
Poll: Most surprising cut by the Chiefs
Pollard: 78%
Lelie: 12%
Thomas: 4%
***
In timely fashion, Matt Conner has which waiver wire pickups the Chiefs should be looking at.
Just wanting to offer some quick hits on some players that raised my eyebrows during a cursory glance around the league transactions based on perceived places of need on the Chiefs:
***
Glaring and not so glaring needs for the Chiefs 53 man roster
Well, here we sit on waiver wire Sunday, and I'm trying to wrap my mind around some of the recent roster moves, and trying to figure out what is next.
Some nice work by stag.
***
Waiting for the Chiefs to fill their practice squad
Chris talks about how ridiculous we are!
And this excitement is pretty ridiculous if you think about. Rarely, and I mean rarely, do any of these PS guys end up having an effect on a season. They'll get released, cut and signed again possibly. But they probably won't take the field.
Forget that. You're ridiculous, Chris!
***
Chiefs claim former Patriots RT off waivers
On Ryan O'Callaghan:
He started six games his rookie season and one in 2007 when starter Nick Kaczur was injured.
He injured his shoulder on August 28th last year and was placed on injured reserve causing him to miss the entire '08 campaign.
***
Chiefs release RT Barry Richardson to make room for Ryan O'Callaghan
Somewhat of a surprise considering the depth at tackle (see chart o-line chart above)
***
Chiefs establish a seven man practice squad
- CB Jackie Bates
- TE Tom Crabtree
- DE Dion Gales
- DE Bobby Greenwood
- G Darryl Harris
- RB Javarris Williams
- WR Rodney Wright
***
The newest Chiefs depth chart is released
More than a few changes including Dwayne Bowe back to the first team.
***
And it's Tuesday morning.

Yes, but some significant others aren’t nearly as understanding as yours ;)
That's true

Whew....
BP gone…wow nobody saw that one coming, but when I step back and look at it……part of me sees why it happened. In pioli we trust, in pioli we trust. I can honestly say I am excited about morgan……brown is a heckuva mentor for that guy, and BP, love him or hate him…had that “yo yo” quality haley despises so much. He needed to make a tackle every time, and he didn’t…..so i guess there it is!
I have a bad feeling
that with no practice todfay is going to be nighmarishly slow for news! The season is too close. I need a constant stream of Chiefs at this point to keep me sane.
D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.
+1
I watched Pitt vs Carolina preseason game #4 last night at like 3 am. The season needs to start already.

Carry 4 QB's
I hope they do, because 2 of them are going to get killed. If they have to cut a QB, I have difficulty believing they will keep Tyler and cut Guti.
Nah...they'll be fine.
It will take a couple weeks but this line is going to improve and should be pretty good by the time we play Dallas
No Friday Night Wood Recap, Prime?
Oh that’s right…or doesn’t exist….//wink//

The joys of working from home
besides if you’d seen the work i have to do, you’d probably want to goof off too.
Blame my wife!
Waiting until August!
Glad Pollard was cut honestly
Was he a safety, was he a linebacker?
Wow he made a couple big hits a game. For every big hit he had, I bet he missed 5 tackles. Consistently out of position. This is why, early on, I’m liking Haley, he just doesn’t seem to put up with any bs or bs players. There is a reason no one wanted to trade for the guy. Good luck to him wherever he ends up.
