Chiefs Depth Chart Released: Bowe, Tank on the First Team
The Kansas City Chiefs have released their newest depth chart for the regular season opener at the Baltimore Ravens.
There were a few changes with the additions and subtractions made in the last week. Here are the changes:
OFFENSE
Wide Receiver: Dwayne Bowe, Terrance Copper
Finally! Dwayne Bowe's "demotion" is over. Chiefs fans, and fans of good players across the league, were shocked when Todd Haley sent him down to the third string with the first release of the depth chart over a month ago.
The fact that he's on the first string for the real games doesn't surprise anyone, nor should it. Bowe is far and away the best receiver on the team.
Left Tackle: Branden Albert, Ikechuku Ndukwe
Herb Taylor was previously backing up Albert, who's firmly entrenched as the No. 1 left tackle, but he was released over the weekend. Ndukwe will be serving double duty as the No. 2 on the left and the No. 1 on the right side.
Left Guard: Brian Waters, Wade Smith
No changes
Center: Rudy Niswanger, Wade Smith
Again not much of a surprise. Andy Alleman was previously listed as the backup center but has been seeing all his time at guard.
Right Guard: Mike Goff, Andy Alleman
Things are starting to make a little more sense. Alleman was listed at center but had only seen time at guard. Hopefully Alleman gives Goff a run for his money.
Right Tackle: Ikechuku Ndukwe, Ryan O'Callaghan
One of the most interesting battles of camp. Both of these players weren't on the roster three weeks ago so this position is certainly up for grabs.
Tight End: Sean Ryan, Brad Cottam, Jake O'Connell
No changes.
Wide Receiver: Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram, Quinten Lawrence
No changes.
Quarterback: Matt Cassel, Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen, Matt Gutierrez
No changes.
Fullback: Mike Cox
No changes
Running Back: Larry Johnson, Jackie Battle, Jamaal Charles, Dantrell Savage
No changes
***
DEFENSE
***
Left Defensive End: Tyson Jackson, Wallace Gilberry
Gilberry moved over from the right side following the departure of Alfonso Boone.
Nose Tackle: Tank Tyler, Ron Edwards
Tank Tyler takes the No. 1 spot. They have rotated throughout camp.
Right Defensive End: Glenn Dorsey, Wallace Gilberry, Alex Magee
No changes
Left Outside Linebacker: Mike Vrabel, Andy Studebaker
No changes
Left Inside Linebacker: Demorrio Williams, Monty Beisel, Derrick Johnson
No changes
Right Inside Linebacker: Corey Mays, Jovan Belcher
No changes
Right Outside Linebacker: Tamba Hali, Turk McBride, Pierre Walters
No changes
Left Cornerback: Brandon Flowers, Donald Washington, Maurice Leggett
Washington moves ahead of Leggett, which is more appropriate considering Washington played well last week and Leggett is a nickelback.
Right Cornerback: Brandon Carr, Ricardo Colclough
No changes
Strong Safety: Mike Brown, DaJuan Morgan
No changes
Free Safety: Jon McGraw, Jarrad Page
No Changes
***
SPECIAL TEAMS (No changes)
***
Punter: Dustin Colquitt
Kicker: Ryan Succop
Kickoffs: Ryan Succop
Holder: Dustin Colquitt, Tyler Thigpen
Punt Returner: Dantrell Savage, Quinten Lawrence, Maurice Leggett
Kick Returner: Jamaal Charles, Dantrell Savage, Quinten Lawrence

hes so small
Probly just a draw guy right now. Im surprised that Battle is the number 2. They must have really liked him a lot.
I think Battle is 2nd...
Because Jamaal Charles can’t hang onto the goddamn football.
Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.
yeah thats really it, I mean charles can block, catch
and do what the chiefs need most…take it to the house…this team lacks big plays
Everybody likes Savage cause you always think hes gonna break one.
Battle pounds yards and Charles has everyone holding their breath every time he gets a touch. Savage will either get hit at the line or bust some moves in the open field. Only problem in my opinion is the O- Line won’t be able to get him into the backfield enough to showcase his talents. Lets be honest he usually was playing against 2nd or 3rd string defenses. Johnson and Battle are both pound away running backs and they will be most effective. Hopefully we see lots of Savage on kick returns.
I don't think it is lack of consistency.
I think it has more to do with lack of attitude. I think most of the players from previous years had an “intitlement” attitude. As if “I was drafted in the first round – I will be starting”. Besides that DJ does not have a mean streak about him. He sounds more like a guy who will shake your hand and go “Is it ok if I tackle you? Coach said I have to do it.”
In addition he only produces for "highlight real"
He is not a hard worker on the field. Once he gets his “big play” – that is it. Job done. A true LB should be D enforcer and general not laid back soft spoken nice guy. And numbers are never enough to judge.
I agree, and in my opinion hes never been in top shape.
he has never really shown the desire to step it up to a pro bowl level all the time…He did have that im a first rounder attitude.
at this point the way mays has played, DJ may not be resigned next season.
I agree. I don't think he will be. Not a least for the money he thinks he deserves.
which should make for an interesting season.
Or maybe
we’re trying to keep his ego in check. Maybe they know he COULD be a good player but they want to break him down and build him up the way THEY want him to be..
Seeing the bench and simply being a rotational guy would decrease his potential salary for his next contract. IF they can keep him on board, he might sign a smaller contract.
But I dont think that will happen. If DJ doesnt step up between now and the end of the season, hes gone.
So Page is 2nd string
Is this an injury thing or were both of our starting safeties not good in transition to a 3-4 D
Let's Kick some ASS in 09 or Die trying
5 new D starters
6 if Demorrio wasn’t starting last year

That's pretty necessary for a 31st ranked D.
Some don’t really look like upgrades unfortunately.

Steve. I believe that
all the starters from last year who performed and played for the team are still starting. Everybody else is not. I really like this. You give the job to the guy who does it best not to the one that gets paid the most. The pay will follow.
Agreed

Charles "impressive preseason" good enough for 3rd RB?
Good to see DJ still on 3rd sting, that guy has been a huge dissapointment his whole career in KC. However Demarrio Williams didn’t look very good last year, another possible weak spot on D.
Copper still the starting WR. This guy must be incredible in practice, because he’s poo in the game.
Hopefully Page will be starting before too long, Quick Draw McGraw is no starting safety in this league.
O-line still scares the crap outta me.
Kudos to Tank Tyler, I really hope he busts out this year.
by chicks_love_chiefs on Sep 7, 2009 12:11 PM CDT reply actions
copper is actually a really talented WR`
Just didnt show it in the preseason, but he can find soft spots in a zone.
Yeah…glad DJ is on that 3rd string as well, soft soft play.
Page I cant really understand, I mean, I thought he was taking a step forward at the end of the year after a slow start…as a leader…guess not.
Copper must be, hopefully he proves about 97.8% of AP wrong.
by chicks_love_chiefs on Sep 7, 2009 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah because as of right now
damn near everyone considers him a waste of a roster spot.
Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...
Let's just hope he's not related to MacSack and can block downfield.
Otherwise he might be wasting that spot and taxpayers money. Wait…we are not talking government now.
Think how much better gov't would be if we paid this much attention to THEIR shenanigans!
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
yeah I think hes listed there since, if LJ goes down battle takes over, but charles is the change of pace guy
much like how leggett is listed 3rd but is really just nickel, while washington/colcolough would come in on injury to flowers/carr
I think Washington gets significant minutes, regardless.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Where did you see Copper Starting? He's backing up bowe..You read it wrong
It’s Bowe and Bradley for the starters
by CALIFAN1986 on Sep 7, 2009 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions
Copper Not Starting
The way I read the chart Copper back up Bowe. I have seen Copper do nothing.
Jerome
Tank was a MONSTER
the last game…absolute BEAST….Glad he took the job, hopefully he now runs with it
Definitely a monster
After all this talk about nose tackle I payed careful attention to that position last game. Tank did a amazing job picking up 2 even three blockers allowing sacks several times. Hes a beast. Keep him fired up Haley!
Hes not gonna get the numbers but...
Hes a player. He will make a big difference in the trenches.
It was & will be!
Don’t really look for big tackle #‘s from any of our front 3, however if they are funneling the RB’s into the LB’s then they are doping their jobs!
Much more comfortable with McGraw & Brown at safety
Pollard & Page just always had me holding my breath, waiting to miss a tackle or blow an assignment. DJ at 3rd string is also still kind of shocking. I have to wonder if Zach Thomas will be back after Week 1, when his contract won’t be guaranteed. Still, Demorrio played somewhat decently in the preseason, and Mays was lights out. I would’ve loved to have had the big name LB corps of Hali, DJ, ZT, and Vrabel, but whoever gets the job done is fine by me. I can’t wait to watch Vrabel play a full game! He’s been excellent at getting to the quarterback and creating pressure, allowing other guys to make the play. Team defense. Balls out. Smart and disciplined.
by HTrayne on Sep 7, 2009 12:15 PM CDT reply actions 1 recs
honestly id rather have mays play over ZT.
agreed on the D…Im excited about them…they really looked good so far…
Im equally as scared about Goff however :)
I'm not comefortable with either one starting really....
McGraw because he’s not very good, and Brown because he’s only played 36 of the last 80 possible games, due to the fact he gets injured every year.

interesting that
in the end the KR PR’s arent leggett or any others(I hated leggett back there for injury reasons)
instead savage is number 2 there and he wasnt even returning kicks in the preseason lol…Guess they saw enough of him last year and knew he could do it. just glad Q Lawrence is the KR…hes the only guy other than charles that at any time can go the distance.
I thought that was
interesting about Savage too. He only had one kickoff return all preseason.

Hes really good in the open field.
I know he didn’t get a lot of opportunity but he is very exciting when he gets the ball with some grass in front of him.
Maybe they just felt they had to find a way to use him.
He doesn't seem especially fast to me though

Haha.
Yah hes not the fastest out there but he can hit somebody and keep those little legs churnin…
On his big run he got hit like three times and was running backwards over a guy before he broke free. He can make people miss too. Sorry guess I’m a fanboy.. can’t help it.
It's about time, Cassel will finally have Bowe in from the start!
Tank Tylor is looking better, maybe that Haley comment about him not being as mean as he use to be sparked something.
It says~
Bradley and Bowe are our 1 and 2 wr~
Where is copper? behind bowe~ take a look or is it just me?

Im glad its Bowe and Bradley~

lawrence
seemed to make quite the impression, I knew the yelling at him daily was just that Haley saw something in the kid.
Page needs to get with the program.
DJ better bring it up several notches. These guys aren’t d*cking around. They will play the guys who give 100% effort and those who strive for improvement.
Depth Chart
Why does the Chiefs website say that Copper is starting in front of Bowe? Ron Edwards is also starting in front of Tyler.
Paging Matt Jones!
WR looks fairly weak. I’m not much of a Copper fan.
Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

Well who is..
I mean in a word.. hes terrible. I hope they are just holding a spot til they find someone better.
I do not think it matters where DJ and Charles are on the depth chart.
Depth charts mean nothing. It is not like that is who has toplay. These players will play and contribute. If they play well they will get more time, if they are inconsistent someone else will get a chance. DJ is getting the Bowe treatment. Haley is trying to push him to live up to his potential.
DJ needs to step up!
This guy was a human high-light reel at texas. He needs to get his butt in gear!
I think
Haley is giving DJ every opportunity to work his way out of a job.

highlight reals aren't indicitave of playing good...
There is a difference between a player like Ed Reed who is always in the right spot and makes huge plays, and Derrick Johnson who is sometimes in the right spot and makes big plays.

DJ made plays in college on athleticism
His football IQ, to me, doesn’t seem to be higher than your average football player. His athleticism allows him to react faster, but I find his anticipation is lacking.
I find him out of position more often than not. His speed to the ball makes up for that; he just needs to start learning how to cover better in space.
Its going on year 5 for him now. If he doesn’t show improvement in that area this season, we may just have seen about everything he has to offer, and we may not see him here much longer.
"The first step to penetration... must not be lateral"
-Confucius, in contrary to Glenn Dorsey lining up in the 2-tech
I agree...
this is why players like Patrick Willis explodes year one, because he is a student of the game. And why Ray Lewis stays a dominant linebacker even though his skills have diminished, and if you think about it, if DJ were to go to Baltimore when we are done with him, I can see Ray Lewis turning him into a dominant force.

So is this an official depth chart?
If so, looks like Croyle gets the nod on Suday if Cassel can’t go. Croyle, the Ravens and a new RT. This could either silence the “Croyle can’t take a hit” yells or increase Brodie’s health insurance premiums again.
Yes it is

I don't think there was much doubt in the mind of fans...
That Croyle would be the number 2 after Thigpen did such a great job embarrassing himself last week. Croyle is just a better fit into the offense.
Nice to see Tank earning a chance with the starters
However I thought Ron Edwards had the best preseason..
well not taking into account any of the practices
aka 80% of the stuff we don’t see every day
I think Tank
Finally started looking like the"bad dude" that Haley remembered and wanted to see. He has the tools.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
Again we must take this depth chart with a grain of salt
I wouldn’t be looking too much into the Page and DJ “demotions” seeing that Battle is listed as the #2 back LOL (clearly Charles should be)
clearly...
since Charles is so good at hanging on to the ball

Phew!
When I first read the headline I read the words ‘Bowe’ and ‘Released’ and I about crapped myself. Things are just getting way too tense around here.
I saw that too...
nearly did a spit take and ruined my laptop

by averagegatsby on Sep 7, 2009 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions
I did that too
all i saw was “Released: Bowe, Tank” and then had to reread it.
McGraw!?! DJ!?!
I’m confused, and a little worried. I hope DJ will either be playing on Sun or a part of some HUGE trade that will make us contenders. Not listening to any other “explanations”
DJ will get playing time just not as much...
and when he does he better make the most out of it. He’s a King Carl guy, Haley has no loyalty to him, so if he doesn’t perform he shouldn’t play. Regardless the best players will be on the field, Bowe is.

Seems like a lot of those King Carl guys are long on measurables and short on intangibles.

DJ
Can you say yo-yo? This is just one example of a guy who really does have enough talent that they don’t want to give up, but he is going to have to start performing on every play if he wants the job. I thought Williams looked pretty good at times last year. I hope he looks even better more times this year. Actually, I hope we can see DJ play like the Denver game last year every game. He would be the best in the league if he could do that consistently.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
I was
about to make my own comment about this..
It surprises me that people say DJ isnt talented. After the 1st preseason game, nearly everybody was saying DJ would thrive in the 3-4 and blow up this year.
Then he hurt his hammy or whatever it was that put him in the conditioning area and he hasnt been the same since. I dont know if its a confidence issue, or a relationship issue between him and the coaches but whatever it is, the guy has the talent. He just needs to be consistant.
exactly
that’s why I think he’s fine, and will be with the team long term
Getting D-Bowe’d will serve him well, and only help the depth of this team, as other ILB get more reps
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
Yeah
I’m not trying to take anything away from Demarrio, but Demarrio is NOT as talented as DJ. Demarrio will have good games here and there, like DJ, but DJ has a better chance of turning into a consistant LB.
DJ is 3rd team for second half surprise
When the Chiefs and Ravens have their third teams in the entire second half, DJ will be out secret weapon! oh wait… This isn’t preseason anymore, is it?
I thought Demario played well for Atlanta but
His good is equal to DJ’s average. Sure DJ is a little inconsistent but he will out play Demario on his worst day.
I love how McGraw is a sure tackler!
the best i’ve seen in a while for the chiefs, but he is terrible in coverage. They are really banking on Flowers and co. to get the job done.
He's stepped it up in coverage, I thought.
I’d hate to think he made it just for special teams and is a liability in the regular D. But I saw a perfectly timed hit that separated the receiver from the ball. With Pollard, that could just as easily have drawn a flag or been a whiff.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
I still think the 4 QBs
means that we’re still shopping one of them for a new O lineman. DJ could be part of one of those deals as well.
anything's possible
I’ve been wrong too many times to say that’s not going to happen.
I can’t wait to see what the next move is
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
It could just as easily be Smith or Goff that leave, if another O-Line face comes in...
Until the O-line is fixed, or mostly fixed, 4 QBs seems prudent, sorry to say.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
