QB Matt Cassel Takes the Practice Field...In Full Pads

Just some great news for you this morning from Josh Looney about Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel and other injured Chiefs:

QB Matt Cassel in full pads today. Flowers Page and O'Connell too. That's encouraging.

Very encouraging indeed Mr. Looney. Does this mean that Cassel is a go for this weekend's season opener against the Baltimore Ravens? Not necessarily but Cassel taking the practice field in full pads is about as encouraging as you're going to get on a Monday morning.

That's good news on TE Jake O'Connell as well and even better news about CB Brandon Flowers and S Jarrad Page. Flowers injured his shoulder against the Seattle Seahawks a couple of weeks ago and both O'Connell and Page's injuries were not revealed. The tight end and safety were both scratched before the Seahawks game.

See Chiefs fans? No reason to get worked about a strained MCL. Even if Matt Cassel doesn't play this weekend, you think he has to be back for the home opener in Week 2.

Update 12:25 PM from Bob Gretz:

With the regular season underway, the media is allowed only a brief 20-25 minute glimpse into practice. In that time, Cassel worked with the other three quarterbacks on individual position drills. When the QBs shuffled through some pads on the ground, Cassel did not take part.

And when he worked taking a snap and dropping back to pass, he did so gingerly. Same with his follow through on that left leg. It was obvious  that he was far from 100 percent.  True indication will be how his knee responds to the work he does today. The Chiefs do not have a practice on Tuesday, so that’s an extra day for his knee to recover.

Saw Looneys tweet earlier

Very encouraging, anything is possible so I am hoping to see Cassel play on Sunday

hoo-ray

so happy to hear that but i would like for him to play this week but kinda scared too just because im not to sure about our o-line and if they can protect him .

The Patriots way.

Baltimore now has 3 different types of QB’s to scheme for. Keep them guessing until just prior to kick-off. The games have already started (& I love it)!

I figured he would play

It just always felt like Cassel was fine for week one to me. I think we’ll see him out there week one. How long till he takes some big hits? Who knows.

i guess anything

to get tyler thigpen cut faster makes me happy :)

Before I wanted Cassel to start week 2 to be sure he was ready

But I don’t have faith in any of our back-ups. Croyle looks like he always has , can look good moving down the field but once he gets in the red zone nothing, A QB that has been groomed for 2 years to be a starter should not get a delay of game in the red zone.
Thigpen has not looked good the last two games so wouldn’t trust him.
And Gut has only played with players that aren’t even on the team anymore.
So we can only hope Cassel is ready to go.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

All good new this morning

i want

cassel to play- very much. but i feel like throwing him in there against the ravens when the injury said 2-4 weeks- i mean i just dont wnat him to re-injure it. c’mon…we all KNOW hes going to get hurried and sacked a few times come sunday (hopefully only once or twice) i just dont want anything to happen long term…that is the LAST thing this team needs right now.

BUT-

if the training staff cleared him to practice, they must take everything into account- meaning hes going to take hits, and the coaching staff is aware of what could happen so i guess if hes ready to go- put the boy in, hes a competitor, thats for damn sure. gotta love that in him.

For all we know

he spends the entire time with a ball cap on and rides the bikes. I’ll feel better when they say he appears to throw without pain.

Cassel is making a statement…

you think he wouldnt play after thiggys agent made those comments on playing hurt? please…hes playing.

One thing is for sure

Week 1 will tell a LOT about how the season will go. Thats one helluva defense.

by Lucasjr5 on Sep 7, 2009 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't go that far.

Pats, Jets, Colts and even Chiefs of the past started 0-3 and still made the play offs. It’s a long season -injures will happen, trades etc. I do agree though that it will tell a lot about the team mentality. I don’t care if we loose as long as we don’t give games away and we play tough.

by ALR on Sep 7, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

What I mean is..

Week one will tell first, how far we have come offensively, and second, if the offensive line can handle a great defense. Think about it. If we go up against Baltimore and allow 0 sacks that would be a huge moral boost to the O-Line. I am not talking about win or lose, you can play a good game and still lose. There are just some stories and loose ends here that will have some sort of a conclusion come week 1.

If

If Cassel plays on Sunday you can kiss him goodbye for the season with our leaky o’line. I have to agree with other comment that until he can play and be able to move freely it is best for the team to sit him.

News

Cassel was participating fully during the positional drills the media was privy to watching.

by chefclaytor on Sep 7, 2009 12:03 PM CDT reply actions

now that is some good news

I saw the photo above was from august 7, so I wasn’t sure to what extent he was practicing. I wonder if some other pics may come in

by paxi on Sep 7, 2009 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions

dude, cmon

you dont protect your QB, FROM your OL, if the QB is healthy….what the heck kind of message does that send?

goodness….lets pay him money, to sit 1 game, WHEN HEALTHY, because our OL stinks?

No way jose, I saw that RT last night on NFL N, he played better than mcintosh has in years

by SDChief on Sep 7, 2009 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

He's not healthy....

He has a sprained MCL, did you miss that? He might be able to play, sure, but that doesn’t make him healthy. I we sure as shit don’t want a hobbled QB limping around trying to avoid a DE that wasn’t blocked.

we said it fellow AP members

Cassel will play in Baltimore, Cassel WILL play in Baltimore…

So happy.

Update from Gretz

Cassel was far from 100% he said.

Please read our community rules, netiquette rules and our technical overview before commenting.

Honestly

Gretz has said a lot of things recently. He hasn’t been the most optimistic guy.

Don’t get me wrong I like the guy. I loved his sideline reporting. Just saying take it for what its worth. Another opinion.

by Lucasjr5 on Sep 7, 2009 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Gretz has always been a pessimist...

But he has been the last couple of really shitty seasons. The guy does know his stuff.

by chicks_love_chiefs on Sep 7, 2009 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

If Cassel plays it better be from the shotgun because that ravens defense is rediculous.

by jrpjr421 on Sep 7, 2009 12:34 PM CDT reply actions

Cassel gives us the best chance to win (if healthy)

which I doubt he will be. I don’t mind taking a loss here so as much I don’t have to see Cassel get killed by that defense.

I don't want no Yo-Yos

by AK_47 on Sep 7, 2009 12:39 PM CDT reply actions

Ugh its so tough

because we DO have a chance to beat Baltimore IF we can move the ball. I don’t doubt our defense against their offense at all. Flacco hasnt had a great camp (or atleast at 1 point during camp he was having problems throwing picks) I dont know how well he played in preseason but I still think our D could keep us in the game.

Thats where the problem is. If the D keeps us in the game, we’ve got to move the ball. Croyle seems to over throw the ball just about 1-2 yards too deep. Better than Thigpen throwing 20 yards past the receiver though. But Cassel hasnt really worked alot with Bowe and Bradley so who’s to say they have good timing down? Cassel might over/under throw the receivers too.

Unless the new RT from Miami or the Pats..whichever starts..plays well, I think our QB is in trouble. Cassel’s knee is already hurt. Just because he can walk around and throw the ball doesnt mean hes not hurting. I wouldnt want this to be a nagging injury.

Its hard to say. I dont know if I’d rather Cassel sit out for a week and take care of the knee or put him out against a Baltimore D that could possibly committ murder on our QB’s and get away with it.

1 more thing..Baltimores defense is aging. Hopefully they wont be the defensive powerhouse we’re worried they’ll be.

I trust the coaching staff to make the right decision. Is Cassel gets hurt again..I’m going to be pissed, so whatever happens, they better not make any stupid playcalls that increase his chances of being hurt. I’m glad Gailey is gone. He did the same shit alot last year. 2 runs for 2 yards and you think they D is going to bite on play action? Please.
