Kansas City Chiefs Establish Seven Man Practice Squad
The Kansas City Chiefs have released some names on their newly established practice squad.
- CB Jackie Bates
- TE Tom Crabtree
- DE Dion Gales
- DE Bobby Greenwood
- G Darryl Harris
- RB Javarris Williams
- WR Rodney Wright
Do those names look familiar? They should because everyone one of them competed in the team's training camp.
This list comes courtesy of Josh Looney at the Mothership (via TheScootness in the FanShots), where he assumes, like many of us, that Barry Richardson will be added to the practice squad should he clear waivers.
The Chiefs are allowed eight players on the practice squad. Chris talked a little more about the rules of the practice squad here.

I need help on this one
How can Rodney Wright be PS eligible?
He was drafted in 2002 and is almost 30 years old. I am assuming this is because of his AFL time and lack of NFL time.
PS has to do with how many games hes been on an active roster or IR
And he’s only been active for 5 games but this is his last season of eligibilty on the PS.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
Barry Richardson should be added if he clears waivers.
He wasn’t gonna perform well for us this year, but he’s athletic and has that undefinable word about him: upside. He definitely could use an extra year of work and then come in and compete in camp next year.
Chiefs 2009: 6-10 or 7-9 and only one season from the Playoffs.
Are we really going to carry 4 QBs in the regular season? I am guessing Cassel’s injury is going to keep him out longer than anticipated.
As soon as Cassel completes his first game of the season Thiggy gets his pink slip.

I think we should drop Gutierrez also, and sign a reliable, seasoned veteran…like Jeff Garcia. Thigpen couldn’t throw the ball into the ocean from five yards.

Cut Gutierrez? Really, I think he has potential. I agree with a vet signing but cut Brokie instead. I like Garcia but he seems like hell bent on wanting a starting gig. We don’t need he stirring up crap with Cassel. Give him to Denver they love drama!

Potential for what? With a decent line, Croyle has 100 times the potential. I know we don’t have an offensive line, but if all arguments were going to be based on the fact that we don’t have a sufficient o-line, we should have thought of signing a Vick-like scrambler.
by Tomahawk_Chop on Sep 6, 2009 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions
Potential for not getting broken, brusied anything. Yes he is a great thrower but do you honestly believe we’re going to have an Oline like we did 6-8 years ago over night. I think not, however even with that oline brokie still has way more chance of getting injured. Or at least he has shown it in the past.
by BoulderChief on Sep 6, 2009 7:36 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Thigpen has the most potential to “not get broken” on our roster, but I think everyone can agree that his inability to complete a five yard pass to a wide open reciever would, for some reason, make it difficult to move the ball. At least Croyle can throw the ball semi-accurately. From what i have observed, when Gutierrez gets pressure, he starts throwing INts. By the way, I thought Croyle showed some toughness against the Rams…he popped right back up after be hit numerous times.

Brodie Croyle is the number 2... Gut has the number 3 spot.
Thigpen gets traded or a pink slip. Might even make it to the practice squad.
Also look for our offensive line to become pretty solid around game 6-8. Half of the line is completely new to the offense, and they need to learn each others strengths and weaknesses. I’m quite content in the talent that Pioli has picked up over the past couple weeks.
Not content, but the new faces are more reassuring than the old ones...
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

+1
Content seems like a very un-Pioli like word. That is part of the reason I like him, those stories you hear about how he was cutting and signing guys days after a Super Bowl win show how he is constantly trying to improve his team’s roster.
Yeah.
I’m not too sure about this build your o-line in early September plan, but it’s a sensible place for KC to make an aggressive pass at the O-Line talent pool. And he’s made his passes at players that he might’ve
targeted months ago, knowing that he could take the loser of New England’s and Miami’s rightside o-linemen, and come out pretty good. The hard thing to do if such be the case would be to keep your lip zipped, make the late trade with Miami, and snag O’Callaghan off waivers.
The “wait” strategy also makes sense if you have Levi or Jon in your sights, let alone Mark Tauscher. There’s enough money to plug-and-play one of these guys if all else fails, but you prob’ly want to try all else first. And there’s little point in either making such old warhorses run like the young’uns’re runnin’, or to run a camp where the old warhorses have “special privileges,” or worse, have to make a spectacle of themselves on the fatty bikes.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
OL please
That’s all I want to see is OL additions to P.S. and roster.

Tight end
Who is the starting TE? Sean Ryan? With Crabree, do we have four pretty mediocre TEs with an offensive coordinator who relies on them for blocking? Deosn’t seem like there’s been much discussion about this position. Before camp, I thought Cottam could be good, but not feeling like it anymore.
It's hard to place an emphasis on a blocking TE
When there are so many other deficiencies. I would love to be so good we were debating our blocking TE.
I thought Cottam was a blocking Tight End a TN

But it's all tied into the problems at RT.
Many of us’d feel better with Jason Dunn pancaking LBs on the outside shoulder of a possibly shaky RT. I’ve seen better blocking technique from #87 and #89, but they’re still not winning the physical battles, or that was my impression from preseason. I think I’m seein’ ‘em gettin’ under the pass rushers’ shoulder pads more regularly, but still being overpowered.
But as I say in all these conversations, it’s not an either/or thing. There’s emphasis on EVERY position that needs improving and CAN be improved. Plenty of resources to land the best FA available, and 3rd in line at the waiver wire, where sat O’Callaghan on Sunday. Remaining FA TEs, ranked by WalterFootball.com. Alex Smith was ranked 10th overall among all 2009 FAs Prob’ly one of the top 3 guys on this list would be an upgrade over 1 or 3 of the current group. With all the uncertainty at tackle, I can even see KC runnin’ a lot of 2 TE sets, and playin’ smashmouth, with a sparing mixture of playaction. For all I know, Brian Waters might be the starting center!
- Alex Smith, Patriots. Age: 27.
- David Martin, Dolphins. Age: 30.
- Leonard Pope, Cardinals. Age: 25.
- Nate Jackson, Browns. Age: 30.
- Daniel Wilcox, Ravens. Age: 32.
- George Wrighster, Giants. Age: 28.
- Courtney Anderson, Texans. Age: 28.
- Bubba Franks, Jets. Age: 31.
- Jerame Tuman, Cardinals. Age: 33.
- Greg Estandia (RFA), Jaguars. Age: 26.
- Darcy Johnson (RFA), Giants. Age: 26.
- Martrez Milner, Saints. Age: 25.
- Eric Johnson, Saints. Age: 29.
- Aaron Halterman (RFA), Dolphins. Age: 27.
- Michael Allan, Chiefs. Age: 25.
- Bryan Fletcher, Colts. Age: 30.
- Dwayne Blakley, Titans. Age: 30.
- Jeb Putzier, Broncos. Age: 30.
- Marcus Pollard, Falcons. Age: 37.
- Mike Merritt, Chiefs. Age: 24.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
None of those two 4 guys are really known for their blocking ability
But they are definetly upgrades as far as receiving goes.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
Crabtree's no longer with the team.
Here’s a pretty plain-jane depth chart, based on current cuts and latest additions, up to O’Callaghan.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Looney posted that 7 were signed...
…but his list on the Mothership only lists the 6 above. He says they “kept it familiar by signing six rookies and one first-year player who had been part of the team’s preseason roster.”
He indicates that Richardson will be #8 after waivers are cleared.
So who didn’t he include on the list?
An optimistic note: B. Waters was, I believe, an un-drafted free agent and we all
know how he has developed, so Richardson and others have potential. I think that Tony Richardson, in fact, was too. I think that it goes to prove that a lot of players do not completely develop or reach their potential until they reach their middle twenties.
I was hoping for Pioli magic but the PS is for all NFL teams to Poach
as needed which is a cool thing for teams like the Chiefs. All we have to do is keep them on active roster for 3 weeks and then if they aren’t usefull transfer them back to PS.
Let's Kick some ASS in 09 or Die trying
Who gives a shit about these scrubs?
Have we signed a RT yet?
dont hate on them
just cause they have made it farther then you could ever get in the nfl
And before you make fun think about what you are saying
70’s is well thought of here so watch the wisecracks :)
Let's Kick some ASS in 09 or Die trying
Commando is the only way to roll.
Just joking about the PS scrubs. I’m still a little flustered about all the shit that’s been going on this week.

Some Bobby Greenwood fans
Hats off to Bobby. and we know scrubs is a good thing here at AP!

I dont think Barry Richardson is even eligible for the PS
According to NFL.com and Espn.com Richardson has been active on the chiefs roster for 6 games last season. If this is the case Richardson is not eligible.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
Isn't he suppose to be starting at RT?
Why would we want him on PS?
Am I missing something?
Cool.
(sigh of relief)
Shouldn’t Barry still be on the roster as a backup? Why is Copper still here? Why is Thigpen still here?
So many unanswered questions!!!!
(head explodes)
I'm with you!
They are still short AT LEAST 1 OL now…
I think the fact that Richardson was cut indicates they aren’t done.
If Pioli wasn’t bringing in another tackle, Richardson would be the backup.
I agree about Copper and Thigpen, I think they are surely the next to go, along with one of the LB and one RB…
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
Considering the uproar over Pollard yesterday...
It seems like Pioli got it right. No takers in a trade and no takers when he’s free.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
Bring him on!
We still need help.
Anybody think O’Callaghan will be ready to start this week? Do we have to go into Baltimore with Ndukwe?
Likely.
After seeing Ndukwe at tackle, I’m kinda hoping that O’Callaghan (or an as-yet-to-be-signed tackle) seizes the starting job. I think we’ll know if we see somebody good in there, after the first couple of snaps.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Thoughts on Ed Gant
what do you all think of bringing him in? I know AZ is deep at WR, and he’s got KR exp? He’s young too.
