Chiefs Fantasy Outlook: Week 1 Against the Baltimore Ravens

Larryjohnson-ravens_medium

From the FanPosts. Something to help tide you over until these roster moves are announced. -Chris

The last time these teams met was in December of 2006 at Arrowhead. The QB for Herm Edwards inaugural season on that day was Trent Green. The Ravens came away victorious with a final score of 20-10. The Fantasy Studs on that day for KC were Larry Johnson (120 yds, 0 TDs), Sammy Parker (5 catches for 71 yards, 0 TD's), and Dante Hall (3 catches for 38 yds, 1 TD). Full box score here.

From a fantasy standpoint, the 2009 Chiefs are a conundrum. Especially against a Baltimore Ravens defense that has been stifling opponents during the preseason. A few KC players might end up providing you with fantasy value in week 1 or they might not. Honestly nobody knows. If somebody tells you otherwise they are flat out lying to you. There are so many questions with this offense right now that any predictions are nothing more than throwing darts blindfolded.

With that said I've tied on my blindfold and started slinging. I advise ducking. My sure to be way off fantasy predictions after the jump.

Larry Johnson

LJ is your most likely Fantasy stud. With KC's QB situation in a state of disarray conventional wisdom says that Haley will lean on the running game. We've only seen Haley call plays for one preseason game. For all we know KC might throw the ball 45 times and rush 10. I'd still bet a paycheck that Baltimore is getting primed to stop #27. If the offensive line can create holes for LJ he has the ability to run wild. They have to make holes though. The stretch play is not going to work on Baltimore. I just don't see the holes being there. If you have a better option this week, I'd use it.

Larry Johnson Prediction: 90 yds rushing, 3 receptions, 15 yds receiving, 0 TD's

Dwayne Bowe

I really like Bowe this season. I think Haley has gotten him focused. He'll still drop a ball  every now and then but I don't believe it will be the issue it was last year. His focus is moot for fantasy. Bowe has got to get the ball to him on time to make things happen. Baltimore prides itself on putting pressure on opposing QB's. Whoever the QB for KC is should probably make sure his life insurance is paid up before he takes the field next Sunday. Bowe might be a decent play in a points per reception league, but in standard formats he will likely under-perform in week 1. Double teams and QB pressure will likely diminish his fantasy value.

Dwayne Bowe Prediction: 6 receptions, 55 yds, 0 TD's

Cassel, Croyle or Thigpen

If Pioli and Haley stay true to form we won't know who the starting QB is until they run out on the field. Cassel's status makes starting a KC QB almost worthless for fantasy. Even if you manage to guess right and make the KC Mystery QB the starter for week 1 on your fantasy team, you will  live to regret it. The KC QB is going to have a rough day come Sunday at Baltimore. Even if the line gets upgraded through waiver wire claims and/or trades there will be no continuity. You can't just throw 5 guys on the field and expect them to mesh. If Haley decides to go with what he's got that leaves Rudy Niswanger, Mike Goff and Barry Richardson to fend off Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata, Ray Lewis and the rest of the AFC Pro Bowl defense. KC might walk away with the win. For fantasy though, you'll be lucky if the KC QB has positive points at the end of the day.

KC QB Prediction: 190 yds, 0 TD's, 1 Int, 1 Fumble

Ryan Succop

Of all the Chiefs that are fantasy relevant this week, I like Mr Irrelevant the most. He has had an impressive preseason. What I like the most about him is how he responded from his missed kicks in week 3 by nailing 3 FG's in week 4. The best hope for the Chiefs this week at Baltimore is a slug fest. If the Chiefs D can keep it close, Mr Succop might be the hero for KC and your fantasy team.

Ryan Succop Prediction: 3 Field Goals, 1 Extra Point

Kansas City Defense

The KC D has been doing good things during the preseason. The scoreboard may not have reflected it, but here's some numbers for you. In 4 games they've registered 7 sacks, 2 picks and a TD. They have held opposing rushers to an average of 97 yds rushing and 227 yds passing. The scoreboard hasn't reflected just how well they've done from a fantasy perspective. The Chiefs D has been better than respectable. Baltimore is a good matchup for them as well. Joe Flacco may have a cool fantasy football commercial but he doesn't strike fear into defensive coordinators. KC is going to stack the box and dare Joe to try skeet shooting on their young DB's. The bigger question is can KC's D withstand the pounding that Baltimore is sure to lay on them for 4 quarters. There are better fantasy football D's to play this week. But if you're not satisfied with your D for week 1, I promise that KC will be available on the Waiver Wire.

Kansas City Defense Prediction: 2 Sacks, 1 Int, 1 TD

I had a relative call me last week

in the middle of a fantasy draft asking who he should draft from the Chiefs.

I told him nobody.

Both my teams have Succop.

I think there are a lot of very long FGs in his future.

i drafted him for the same reason

I like Bowe, LJ and handcuffing Charles

I think they’ll all 3 put up solid numbers when its said and done, especially later in the season. Plus they get to play Oak and Dev twice. Worthy backups/situational starters

That's My Philosophy

I might have considered Bowe just because they’re going to be throwing to him a lot. Beyond that, there’s nobody on the team I wanted for either of my fantasy teams. Cassel maybe as a backup, but I don’t think he’s really going to be any better than Flacco considering his line.

And I’m not optimistic about their chances against Baltimore next week.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.
5. Larry Johnson will gain 0 yards rushing for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

  1. -where do you place the broncos? are you saying below Oakland or 2nd in division
    thanks just curious.

I Think The Broncos Will Be Competing For Last Place

After the last week, I think we’ll be right down there with them. But they’ve also got a better RB right now than we do, and a better receiving corps (if Marshall returns and keeps his head on straight). It’s going to be between the two of us for third place.

I Think Oakland Pulls Second Place

Just because they’ve got enough talent on-hand to challenge San Diego. It’s old talent, but it’s talent nonetheless.

QBs are too important in this league

Which is why I would pick the Chiefs over the Raiders. I just don’t see JaMarcus getting it done and I think Cassel will be better.

Even with this line.

From Afghanistan

Larry will do good on good matchups but not on week one. I hope bowe puts up some good # and even a TD. Also the kicker look really good but you never know thats why they play the game.

Kickers

Not to be negative or anything but the chiefs has had a tough time in the red zone some week one would a good time to put in Succop as your kicker. Just a suggestion. Good luck

If you just have to start a Chief this week...

go with Def. and/or Succop.

Looked at differently,

it almost looks as though the Chiefs are scoring 16 points & with the D getting 2 interceptions & 1 fumble recovery, I can calculate that the Chiefs win a hard-fought 16 -13 slugfest! Geaux Chiefs! :)

Had to pad

the D stats a little!!

Did you take into account

The fumbles our backup hb’s will give up?

by mcclanahanman on Sep 6, 2009 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

For Charles

that would be .125 per game or 1 every 33.5 carries, so I hadn’t deemed it necessary. :) And I really don’t see Savage or Battle getting much game experience yet.

by ttownmikey on Sep 6, 2009 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't list the bad things I thought would happen in this game

I see Charles going around the end and meeting a big ugly with bad consequences

Fantasy...

One of my teams I have Bowe, LJ, Succup, and KC Defense on my bench. Gotta love the Chiefs!
