JESUS CHRIST!!!

Is there no limit to the stupidity of what the Raiders will do. Dont get me wrong Richard Seymore is a good player, but he is hardly worth a first round pick anymore.

And really what are the Patriots going to do with a top 10 pick?

I disagree...

At his age (though he is younger than i thought) and with a career high of 8 sacks its not like he is dominant, and Im pretty sure DE have as rapid a decline as any position player.

I dont know what Seymores contract is...

but most Rookies sign a 4 or 5 year deal, I doubt Seymore will be a Raider that long. More than likely he has 2 years left (counting this one) and then the Patriots get him back at an 8th of what he was making.

8 sacks...

That’s nothing to sneeze at considering he plays DE in a 2-gap, 3-4 system where his primarily responsibility is NOT to rush the passer.

Anyway, I’m shocked by this move.

I bet you are!

Sounds like a great move for the Pats though? Assuming the hoodie turns the 1st rounder into 3 2nd rounders.

Short term, no. Long term, yes.

I like that Belichick thinks about the long term so I won’t argue the move. It’s good value for a guy that was most likely gonna leave next year in FA anyway, because we had him and Wilfork coming up with expiring contracts.

As for 3 2nd rounders… we already have those for next year ;)

I Agree

This is getting out of control! The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. I know that in the end the NFL makes more money if the Patriots are one of the best teams, but c’om this is getting rediculous? Didn’t they just trade Burgess for a 3rd rounder a couple weeks ago? Why not trade between the two players?! Maybe Kraft is the new minority owner of the Raiders…

by Skrappy on Sep 6, 2009 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Its not too surprising

when you watch NE this preseason. They’re moving to more 4-3 defensive fronts and Seymour’s having trouble fitting in. Which also makes you wonder why the Raiders would acquire him since they play in a 4-3 front.

Also both Seymour and Wilfork’s contracts are up after this year and no way they keep both especially with Seymour turning 30 this time next year.

Move makes a lot of sense for NE. Probably more of a name acquisition who will help a little on the leadership front but I question his productivity entering a 4-3 scheme.

by CHIEFER on Sep 6, 2009 10:33 AM CDT reply actions

Huh?

What team are you watching?
The Raiders give up more running yards than…well….the Chiefs.
Tommy Kelly was the biggest joke contract of last year. They paid $50million dollars to a guy that had never ever ever been anything more than a sub-par DT. (Cause Al Davis is bat-shit insane).
The Raiders actually scooped up Alfonso Boone and brought him in the work him out when the Chiefs cut him. Their D-Line is horrible.
This move probbably means Boone doesn’t get signed.
Even though this is a very good move for value by the Patriots, it certainly won’t hurt the Raiders D-line any to have at least one guy that doesn’t suck on the field.

You might be right (I intended it more as joke). However in all seriousness, I think the reason why they statistically looked so bad

is because they were loosing most of the time. Thus teams kept running on them. Their corners were playing very well and the simply kept attacking on the ground. You shorten the game this way and it is safer. It is not fully appropriate to rely only on numbers to come up with a really good picture of a team performance or quality. All should be looked at in perspective. And all is relative (to quote Enstein).

Honestly I don't know if the Raiders can afford anymore first round picks

As bad as they have been they keep having to draft early and pay these “quality” first rounders millions of dollars, maybe their new strategy is to get rid of their first round picks early so they don’t have to pay for them. They’re paying for Gallery, Russel, McFadden, Heyward-Bey, who else..? It’s getting ridiculous.

It's Insane How Badly That Team Is Run

The Patriots just ripped the Raiders off big-time. And all Davis had to do was wait for four months and he could have signed Seymour for no compensation to the Patriots.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.
5. Larry Johnson will gain 0 yards rushing for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.

Really, I am just trying to understand the Pollard release as much as you and giving a little insight on what I think is going to happen.

At least with Brown you get a field general who has lost some steps but still plays smart and can actually lead a secondary on the field. Kind of like Brian Dawkins.

Can't argue that

But its not like the guy was injury prone prior to these last few seasons.

It was an ACL in 2004 — very common and can happen to anyone. He actually rehabbed quite well in the following season and managed to play 12 games. Then went down to a calf injury.

After that it seems like a string of bad luck. I agree it is still a risk, though.

When a player gets a fluke injury once it’s bad luck. When he gets injured regularly every season for five straight years, he’s injury-prone. And when he’s 31 and has been injured for five straight years, he’s someone you should never turn a starting job over to unless you have zero other options.

I think the most shocking part of this

is that they seem to be relatively upset about it at Pats Pulpit. If Pioli traded Brian Waters -best comp I could think of – for a first rounder (likely a top 10 pick) I would be uncorking some champagne.

by KCScuba on Sep 6, 2009 11:09 AM CDT reply actions

Its probably because the Patriots can seriously challenge for a SB...

and without Seymore I think it hurts their chances a little… Of course they did fine with out Ty Law and Lawyer Malloy too.

I also think it might have to do with the Patriots starting to get old

They need the younger players who can make an impact, and they will especially need that by 2011

I wouldn't say "upset"

Surprised is more like it. The move weakens us in the short term, but obviously helps us out long term. It’ll give us some cap space to hopefully extend Vince Wilfork, but a player of Seymour’s caliber isn’t exactly easy to replace.

And despite all of the talk of the Patriots moving to a 4-3, there’s no guarantee of it. The Patriots could still morph into it on occasions like they’ve done in the past depending on the opponent, but we don’t know yet if it’ll be our base. They still have the players for the 3-4, with Jarvis Green stepping in for Seymour, I would guess.

I’ve also read that Seymour was “declining” on here… I’m not sure that person watched the Pats all that much last year, because the only year he had that was better was probably in 2003. He’s fully recovered from the injury that ailed him at the end of ’06 to the beginning of ’07.

by NESilver on Sep 6, 2009 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions

hes not declining per

But he is 29 and has played a lot of games and taken a lot of punishment. You know the Pats way, trade guys as they start to get older while they still have value. No way NE was giving him a new deal given his age plus with Wilfork a free agent after this year. Brilliant move by NE. Seymour is going to a team that plays a 4-3. We’ll see how that works.

by golfbard on Sep 6, 2009 11:29 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah, I hear you.

Seymour can play in a 4-3 so I’m not sure where some people are getting that he wouldn’t “fit in”. He’s played DT for us in that alignment plenty of times. I feel bad for the guy though, having to end up in such a dysfunctional organization.

by NESilver on Sep 6, 2009 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Seymour

is 6’6 and 310.. not ideal for a 4-3 DE but maybe they move him inside to tackle? Should be interesting to watch. Could work… although a different situation but worthy of mention, Kris Jenkins went from being a 4-3 DT in Carolina to a 3-4 NT with the Jets and did well before getting hurt late last year so he may adjust well.

We don’t want the guy for what he’d cost. Seymour would be a good signing for the team, but he’s not a top-five level talent at this point of his career. Which is why the Patriots were letting him go.

http://www.kffl.com/static/nfl/features/freeagents/fa.php?option=By+Team&y=2010 The only noticable players I saw on there are Sebastian and Fabian Washington, neither are worth tagging, but I believe they will have to choose between Richard and Nnamdi. On another note I noticed that DJ and Tank Tyler are free agents for us next year…

Only the Pats

could draft a guy 6th in the first round, turn him into a 5 time pro bowler, win 3 Super Bowls with him as a cornerstone and then, when he is about to decline, flip him for another first rounder that will probably be around the same spot (6th) they got him to begin with.

They essentially got Seymore for free. I sure hope we can parlay Tyson Jackson into 5 pro bowls, 3 super bowls and a first round pick in 9 years. Shit.

Patriots were in a salary cap tangle.

They did great by dumping 14 mil for Cassel, 4 mill for Vrabel, and a sizable amount for Seymour. Plus they gained a 1st and a 2nd draft pick – both likely to be high because it’s the raiders and the chiefs.

Short term, the top notch play of Vrabel and Seymour will be missed. And if Brady goes down early they will miss Cassel. But relieving salary cap problems and losing two aging vets and a backup QB for 2 high picks was indeed a great move.

I think Al Davis is seeing a chance to make playoffs this year in a weak AFC West. KC and Denver are in shambles, so he is willing to bet on injuries to LT, Merriman, Gates, or Rivers of the Chargers and a lot of luck to make a run this year. Seymour will help his cause. Al is not getting any younger.

yeah if you add in all the picks, the 2nd rounders this past april etc...they are turning into

a very very talented young football team….

how the heck did the do it? all those trade backs, the one with the 49ers that netted the extra first which made up for losing one…these guys hit on late first rounders, and now are getting a ton of 2nd’s, and now 1st’s that will be worth even more.

scary scary patriots. they really have it figured out.

and I agree on the raiders, cant turn that around, I do think Seymour is the best character guy to go in there in a long time, maybe since tim brown.

by SDChief on Sep 6, 2009 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Seymour is a double agent!

Pats have helped screw up the Raiders and Broncos this offseason and seasons to come to help out Pioli! It’s the master plan to eventually bring the Chiefs to dominance in the AFC West. Seymour will just sabotage the team during his stay then leave.

Pats helped take out Cutler by sending McDaniels over there. The Chargers haven’t fallen for a Patriot trap yet…

It all fits. Conspiracies are fun. Go Chiefs!

by worc on Sep 6, 2009 12:43 PM CDT reply actions

Sorry...

But I actually like this deal for Oakland. It’s all good on paper, I think. Great young players who are high draft picks and lots of potential. No real veterans around them to bring it home and Seymour definitely adds a major piece for “right now.”

Every team in the AFC West could potentially act with a “right now” attitude because the whole division sucks. The Chiefs decided to wipe the slate completely clean, but the Raiders aren’t that far off from competing (in their minds, at least)

Of course, we all know the ownership, coaching and overall circus will prevent that from happening. But it could actually work on paper. And a first-rounder in 2011…I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

by Matt Conner on Sep 6, 2009 12:54 PM CDT reply actions

Need a trade partner for that

The Broncos had ammo to make that move after they traded Cutler. Who has the draft picks to pull something like that now?

Plus, the Pats have 3 2nd rounders next year. The chances of getting 3 2nd rounders for 2011 (making it three years in a row) are unlikely. It would be awesome, don’t get me wrong, but I have a hard time picturing that happening.
