Glaring and Not-so-Glaring Needs on the Chiefs 53-Man Roster
From the FanPosts. -Chris
Well, here we sit on waiver wire Sunday, and I'm trying to wrap my mind around some of the recent roster moves, and trying to figure out what is next.
The first round of cuts were dead on, IMO... McIntosh had to go, or the right side of the line wasn't going to improve.
The final round of cuts brought 2 major surprises, and 2 minor ones.
Pollard was a shocker, but looking back, I guess I can see the signs... I just didn't believe it.
Lelie was a big surprise to me, especially considering they also cut Wright and Taurus... and kept F$%#ing Terrance Copper.
Zach Thomas being cut, and Colin Brown were minor surprises, considering it was looking like neither would really contribute on the field this year anyway. I'm curious as to whether they gave ZT an injury settlement... and what "injury" kept Colin Brown out for the season?
So, now that the cuts are in, and there are 700 new players out there on the waiver wire, I wanted to take a look at the most glaring needs left on this team, and get some more suggestions on how they might be addressed. I also will look at some "not-so-glaring" positions of need that could be upgraded, or could stay the same.
I'm also curious who you think will be the next Chiefs cut or traded to make room for Pioli's acquisitions.
Glaring need #1... Offensive Line
It's been very well documented that there were problems on this line for the last couple of seasons, and most felt that Pioli hadn't done enough to address them. Well, I don't think you can make that argument now!
By cutting Damien McIntosh, Herb Taylor, Daryl Harris, Tavarres Washington, Brian De La Puente, Eric Ghiaciuc and putting Colin Brown on IR... and trading for Alleman and Ndukwe...you can see that Pioli/Haley aren't just standing pat with an under performing line.
I've tried to analyze the OL performance in my "play by play" posts, and feel like the starting group actually doesn't look too bad. The running game is improving weekly, and the pass blocking will continue to improve as the first unit is established and gets better communication, which should result in fewer missed assignments and less confusion. Better blocking from the TE and FB positions would be a huge boost to the pass protection.
Depth is now the major issue, unless a "big name" player or two is brought in. Tony Pashos may be the only player on the waiver wire that has a chance to start over Richardson or Ndukwe at RT, IMHO.
I will repeat my prior prediction that it is more likely to build depth through the roster cut down acquisitions, rather than bring in guys that can start immediately. The incumbents know the system, expectations and each other better than a waiver wire guy can.
UPDATE: O'Callaghan signed, Richardson cut. More OL moves are surely on the way.
I expect Pioli to sign as many as 2 OT, and potentially a C. With 8 OL on the 53 man roster, and Wade Smith being "upgradeable", they could also cut from another position to create space for more OL depth.
the depth chart would be Albert/(FA to be named)... Waters/Wade Smith...Niswanger/ Alleman...Goff/ Ndukwe...Richardson/ (FA to be named) Ndukwe/O'Callaghan
I think Wade Smith could easily be cut, if they find a C that the Chiefs really like in the waiver fodder. The other OL that made the 53 are probably safe at this point... even though AP has been calling for Mike Goff's head, I think that Pioli/Haley like him.
The starting lineup needs to start working together ASAP, building cohesion as a unit, and preparing for a good challenge at Baltimore. No more rotation or player evaluation. It's go time for the 5 starters above. If one of them struggle as the season goes on, they can easily be replaced... but it's clear that the starters have pretty much been chosen, and need to perform as a group.
Glaring need #2...Wide Receiver/KR/PR
I have been saying for a while that I thought the WR corps was underrated and that no other acquisitions were needed. That all changed yesterday, IMO.
By cutting Taurus Johnson, Rodney Wright, Ashley Lelie, Amani Toomer...the Chiefs have made a statement that they still aren't happy at WR.
The depth chart looks like this now: Bowe, Bradley, Lawrence, Engram, Copper.
Obviously, Bowe and Bradley are solid. Lawrence has shown flashes of brilliance, flashes of butterfingers... but it's clear that the coaching staff sees plenty in him, and he factors into the plans in a big way.
The two questions in my opinion are Engram and Copper...they could easily be replaced and upgraded. In my opinion, a young slot receiver that can return kicks (like Lance Long, or Edelman in NE) would be the best upgrade to this group of WR. A home run hitter/big name Wide Receiver would be a second priority this year, but a top priority in the draft next year.
I'm not sure who is out there after roster cuts, or who would be available via trade, but I could see 1 or 2 WR being added to the team... but at least one of them would have to be special teams contributors, hopefully as a returner who could catch every kick and be able to take one the to the house occasionally.
With 5 WR on the roster now, the Chiefs could cut Copper and/or Engram for younger and more productive players. OR they could add 1 or 2 WR, and cut from another position, like QB, RB or LB.
Glaring need #3... Tight End
I've said before that KC fans have been spoiled all these years with TG and Jason Dunn. For years, we could count on one TE catching everything in sight, and another acting as a snowplow for RBs and as a 6th offensive lineman for pass protection.
Pioli/Haley obviously value the TE position differently than the prior regime. They traded Gonzalez for a 2nd round pick, then brought in Sean Ryan and traded into the 7th to draft Jake O'Connell.
Cottam is the incumbent, but has been the invisible man during the preseason. Sean Ryan sits atop the depth chart at this point. Ryan is known as a blocker, but clearly wasn't getting that done during the preseason games. He did show up as a receiver vs StL with 2 big plays.
My prediction: The Chiefs could very likely be looking to bring in a TE like Pope, Smith or Watson. My vote continues to be for a great blocking TE, wherever they can find one. I think they'll keep 3 TE on the roster, so O'Connell could be the odd man out if an acquisition is made... but don't be too shocked if they cut Cottam at some point.
Not-so-glaring need #1...Fullback
Mike Cox has been a serviceable FB for the Chiefs... but he's definitely a "Chan Gailey" guy. Pioli and Haley have no reason to be loyal to Cox, as they look over the list of free agents and waived players.
My prediction: Dan Klecko could be brought in to replace Cox. He's huge and versatile, and was drafted by Pioli. This could be a nice upgrade.
Not-so-glaring need #2...backup QB
The Thigpen/Croyle dead horse need not be beaten here...
However, speculation is running wild that the Chiefs have a need for another QB with Cassel hurt and Thigpen ineffective.
My prediction: The Chiefs stand pat with Croyle and Gutierrez as the backup QBs. Thigpen is traded if they can find a taker, or cut as soon as Cassel is healthy enough to play. They'll need the roster spot to upgrade OL and WR.
Not-so-glaring need #3... Safety
The secondary should be a strength for this team, but coverage has been soft, and turnovers have been scarce. The fans all said KC was set in the secondary, but the new management has shown their dissatisfaction by cutting Pollard, signing Mike Brown and drafting Donald Washington.
Bernard Pollard is undoubtedly the most surprising cut the Chiefs made this weekend. For whatever reason, KC is moving on from one of the defensive leaders of the last couple years. Some say it was because he argued with Clancy, some say they wanted to start Mike Brown, some say DaJuan Morgan is finally healthy and productive enough to make a crowd at safety.
My prediction: The Chiefs could bring in a safety that is known to be great in coverage and a ball hawk. If so, Ricardo Colclough is the next likely cut in the secondary.

Nice writeup
I hope we get some offensive lineman today

Barring injury I don’t see us picking up a safety. I think the front office thinks we’re set in the secondary unless we bring in a guy that can return punts and kicks. IF that’s done I can see us bringing in a deep ball threat WR, yeah I’d love to see Lelie back. Other than that any wr brought in will probably be by trade.
I’d like to see Brohm brought in as a backup quarterback, I mean come on he was figured to go in the first round a couple of drafts back, give Thiggy and Guit the axe.
3 or 4 linemen would be great if they can play.
If a blocking TE and FB can be found bring em in.

Brohm has the makings
of a good signal-caller in a possession type offense which I believe that Haley would like to employ. Give him a little seasoning behind Cassell & I think he could fill in admirably down the road.

Brohm to the Practice Squad?
I like Guti as the backup, but I agree they need a developmental guy like Brohm

Two, maybe three lineman, a Tight End from one of those three, and a WR to send Copper packing and I would be pretty happy.
Not that these things would fix everything, but it would help.
I can go either way on a QB.

Some people are acting like its christmas,
santa is gonna give us everything we want. Honestly I wouldn’t be suprised if we don’t pick up anyone right away. This team has hardly had anytime to gel together, due to the constant flip flop of the depth chart. I’m not saying this team is close to perfect, but other than maybe one OL i honestly can’t see much else getting done until after the baltimore game.

it's Pioli's Christmas
he’s been very clear that he intends to bring in some new blood.
I think there WILL be at least 3 moves within the week

Disagree about the line
I mean yeah it has to start getting cohesive, but they’re not going to just say “Oh well, our line sucks. Let’s make them stick together one more year!” They’re going to do what they can to improve it, and smooth out the rough edges this year. This year is the foundation of the new regime.
by TonylovesKC on Sep 6, 2009 11:53 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
i agree
they are doing what they can to improve it.
my point was that the Chiefs probably already have their starting line, and new acquisitions probably will be for depth, initially… they could take over down the road, but it maynot be right away.
Thus, the current starters need to start looking like a cohesive unit, instead of standing around wondering who to block

I'm starting to think Pioli isn't going to do anything right away.
He thinks this line can be “coached up” and he is going to go into the season with a speedbump for a line. I believe he has taken an insurance policy on Matt Cassel and is looking to cash in.
I have lost faith in Pioli.
This roster looks like a HUGE pile of dog shit.

Off topic, but did anyone else hear about Merriman’s arrest for assaulting and false imprisonment of Tela Tequila this morning ?
Looks like bad news for San Diego.

I am not very confident in that at this point.
The RT position has been a very well known position of need for what,2 years now? After 8 months on the job and not a single move has been made to upgrade the position or even try to upgrade it. Not one move? Really?
It only takes one glaring weakness on the O-line to expose your offense and render it completely ineffective. Every team in the NFL knows that we have a serious problem at that position and a team like Baltimore is going to wreak havoc in our backfield next week and that will continue for the entire season. It’s one thing to say that we are a 2-14 team and we won’t turn it around in one year but, it’s another thing to just totally not address a problem and set the team up to fail and not even try to win this year.
This management team is not trying to win now. It seems as though they ARE building for the future but don’t care AT ALL about putting a winning product on the field for the 2009 season.
There is one week before the season starts and this team is NOT ready yet. This is going to be ugly.

relax, take a deep breath, and have some faith
There are so many things we don’t know about what has gone on behind the Big Red Curtain. Just because no visible moves for RT have been made (which is not true since Ndukewe said he was brought in to work at RT, and they drafted Colin Brown), that doesn’t mean Pioli hasn’t been…what was the phrase….haggling like a gypsy at the goodwill store to find a suitable replacement. Runyan and Levi Jones have injury issues. They were hoping we had someone on board who could step up for the spot…but going by what they saw we didn’t. So now we get to go back to work to find the right pieces. Even if all we get is some additional depth for the line this year, I think it will end up better than what we’ve had the last two years.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

also shopping at Dillard’s & J.C. Penney’s as well trying to trade for some quality, front-line OL & not just haggling at Goodwill!! : )

This is a damn nice post! rec'd
I’ve stayed away from commenting in over the last 24 hours so I could temper my emotions and look at this entire situation objectively. I’ve managed to cool my outrage a bit, but I still can’t fathom the big picture.
O-line – I find it inexcusable that this was never addressed in the first place. Two straight years of massive problems and I don’t understand why we had to sit back and evaluate. It appears that these cut-downs have made obvious room for at least a couple of additions. They damn well better.
TE – Stag, I’ve been with you on the blocking from the TE position from pre-season week 1. I’m not particularly high on any of the guys we have and I don’t think any of them are well suited for the “6th O-lineman” blocking duties. This is nearly as great a need as the right side of the line.
WR – Eh. I think we have a good #1 and #2 and the depth is merely serviceable. I’d like to see some improvement but I don’t see it as critical a need as many here at AP do.
Saftey – Releasing Pollard was Pioli’s second worst move since joining the Chiefs. The worst is neglecting to address the O-line. I loved the Brown acquisition when his role was for depth and leadership. Now, not so much. This is going to bite us in the ass both short and long term.
FB – We at least need a second FB to provide depth. I don’t mind Cox. Of course upgrades are always welcome.
QB – If O-line and TE aren’t adequately addressed this week, I predict that we’ll see a whole bunch of QB’s in Chiefs uniform during the course of the season.

Agree mostly with stagdsp 'n' you, Buck'O.
OL – Disagree slightly on O-Line. Agree it isn’t fixed. But am SO encouraged by the defensive turnaround, that I’m OK with what they did in the draft. And I’m seeing enough GOOD talent in the reject pile that I think the Chiefs can patch up that right side. And with Albert steppin’ up the way he is, I’m glad the Chiefs didn’t go OT in the 1st round. Jones, Runyan, Tauscher, Pashos, Forney, Raiola, … Unlike some, I’m not interested in AQ Shipley. Slipped to the 7th round and then got cut… He’s probably on his way to someone’s practice squad, but apparently more of a project than a starter, and Chiefs need 1 or 2 starters. My only gripe was with “inexcusable.” I’ll think they screwed up if the O-Line isn’t at least average by Week 4. Even then, I probably wouldn’t use the adjective “inexcusable.”
S – Disagree totally on Pollard. I didn’t at all expect to graft the entire Tampa-2 secondary onto this more aggressive 3-4 scheme, although at the start of things, I was more worried about the corners we all love, and thinking that Pollard would just be bangin’ away more in the box. But the more I watched in preseason, the more it seemed like Pollard just wasn’t playing that smart or aware. Still playing like that plucky rookie whose WOW factor obscured the blown assignments. The front 7 are playing much more aggressively, and the safety needs to anticipate a lot more than I was seeing, rather than racking up tackle totals by preventing touchdowns from behind the ballcarrier after he’s gouged us.
FB – jumps out at me, too. But Jackie Battle’s a FB-sized guy with speed. I think they’re likely to have Battle back there with LJ a fair amount of the time, and find ways to get Jackie the ball on screens and wheel routes. Cox is starting to look fairly convincing leading the way for LJ up the gut, but Battle has shown some real warts as a blocker.
WR – Titans are looking at Matt Jones. I think the Chiefs should, too. Be interesting to see what happens with Tyree.
QB – Agree with you that it’ll be tough for them if OL isn’t fixed. Thigpen still might be the only man in KC who can survive behind that line in an actual game.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Thoughtful prose hmills
O-line- Agreed, the word “inexcusable” is a bit harsh. However, going back to Pioli, Haley & Co.‘s first look at the previous year’s film, you can’t deny that it was readily apparent, to the extent of being obvious, that the players we had on the roster weren’t good enough to get the job done. They still didn’t address it. They chose to address other areas of need. Pioli and Haley also knew they would be bringing in an incredibly expensive QB and still they did not adequately address the O-line through FA or draft and I think this was a massive risk. That’s where I come up with the word “inexcusable.” If they end up with with a decent line via “the final week of pre-season through 53-man cut-down waiver-wire scrub-O-licious bonanza” I’d call it an incredible stroke of good luck. To that, I’ll gladly tip my hat to Pioli and Haley, but I’ll still think it was an inexcusable risk for them to take. It would sorta be like going all in and not actually having the royal flush until the very last card is turned. Not cool for a GM who comes from a Pats organization that would rather be good than lucky!
S – I could almost agree with you on this one but… Your point about the cover-2 CB’s is exactly where I think they should have made changes. I look at the drafting of Donald Washington to be a serious move in the right direction, although he may be a bit of a project. He’s more of a natural man-coverage type of corner than the other guys. Makes more sense to me. I struggle to see where Pollard was more of a “system mismatch” to the extent that they had to release him. I also don’t like that Brown and Morgan are expected to fill the void. IMO, Pollard > Brown and Morgan.
WR – I don’t disagree about Matt Jones. We probably should be giving him a look. That catch by Tyree was one seriously special play, but that’s just it; it was just one play. Meh.
KR – Savage is my boy. I know he doesn’t have the open field speed to run it all the way back very often (if at all), but if he’s consistently able to start us beyond the 30, I’d say give it to him and don’t waste too much time and money trying to find that extra special guy. I’ll probably get flamed for that but it’s still my opinion. :-P
FB – Battle better be a special teams monster or else I say go out and find some depth at this position.
QB – Makes you wanna cry a little doesn’t it? :)

I dunno, Buck'O.
GM can’t do everything at once. Lots and lots of teams spent draft picks on O-Line, and if you’re picking your spots to be aggressive, O-Line IS a position to pick up something useful from the refuse heap in September ‘09. I’d still feel better if there were a semi-expensive OT come in, just to help me sleep at night. But with matters SETTLED on d-line, notice that the Chiefs have plenty to bring to bear on the OL situation, and some pretty good talent out there from which to choose.
I’m glad they really did some D-Line work early, and are picking through the waiver wire for o-line right now, and not the team that signed Greg Ellis and just made a trade for Richard Seymour.
The timing on this might actually be brilliant, because of all the teams that wrong-foot themselves with a good veteran, a high-priced rookie, and a promising project player. They end up giving up some good value in the veteran, because they want to develop the project player, and the veteran’s too pricey not to be playing. I mean, like, uh, it could happen.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

It better happen! We’re running out of meaningful chances to get it right! That’s what I’m saying about the royal flush, didn’t happen until the river. HUUUUUGE risk. So the argument fundamentally boils down to:
are you the kinda guy who would rather be lucky than good?
or are you the kinda guy who would rather be good than lucky?
Myself, I prefer the latter. I guess doing what I do, I have to focus on my marathon game-plan because I’m a shit sprinter. I never could figure out how to get rich quick.

One RT added so far
O’Callaghan is here now, so that’s some progress. Hopefully more to come. I’d like to see another T, a C, and a blocking TE.
I’ve always thought Brohm was decent, and he’d be the second best QB on our roster if we could get him, but I doubt that we do, since we already have 4 QBs on the roster.
We’ll need a safety soon, after Brown gets injured. And a return man would be a big help, especially if he knows when to catch a punt and when to let it roll into the endzone, which several different guys messed up last week.

Agreed
I’d like to see another T, a C, and a blocking TE.
If they adequately fill those positions and shift some current bodies to the RG slot, we can probably survive the year with the other remaining holes elsewhere on the roster. Might not always be pretty, but I think we can do it and show a significantly improved record this year.

It sucks to be doing it so late, but it might be where the best value was going to be in order to get the job done, with all the early attention given to O-Line by the rest of the league. But at some point, I’d like to not just be underwhelmed with every O-Line move.
