Poll: Most Surprising Cut by the Kansas City Chiefs?

Okay AP readers. We want to know how you feel about these cuts. Vote in the poll on the most surprising move (cut/IR) made by the Kansas City Chiefs today.

My vote? Chiefs guard Colin Brown. He was placed on IR this evening. One of the last reports about Brown was back on August 4th, when Bob Gretz reported that Brown sat out out the first 30 minutes of the final training camp practice in River Falls, WI.

Read more about all of tonight's cuts at this post by Joel.

I voted for Lelie just because I believe that there is a lot more to the Pollard

story that we don’t know. Management saw him as a virus to the team and coaches.

by jcox31mc on Sep 5, 2009 8:09 PM CDT reply actions

So where is the link that leads you to that conclusion?

This is just like when Bowe got put down to 3rd string and everyone jumped on the Haley bandwagon talking about how lazy Bowe was and what a lousy player he was (despite two 1000 yard season).

Let’s not trash players to jump on the side of an unproven rookie coach that is yet to lose a game.

Actually there have been a lot of stories out of camp that

if you read between the lines showed Pollard was on the bubble. The only surprise is that noone else wanted him.

Brodie and Thiggy should have been cut

They both have looked horrible. And I hate to say that, I love Thiggy, and have had high hopes for Brodie.

Also Pierre Walters (AP member, yeah!) and Belcher

are a little bit of a surprise, Congrats to them both!

Brown. But thankful.

No apparent injury but he clearly wasnt ready yet but also to release him wouldve been stupidity. Surprised how they kept him but happy they did.

Pollard was never a GREAT player

and there were rumors of trades before. Plus you add in the scuffle with Pendergast. It was surprising but there was evidence there. Lelie? For a guy that played so well and you add in our need and lack of depth at wr did anyone really see that coming?

I don't want no Yo-Yos

pollard....really???

i was optimistic about the haley pioli scheme. not so any more. this just doesn’t make sense. mike brown??? lets see if he can even make it through half the season without being injured.

i don’t like it. nope. not at all.

by KCWolfff on Sep 5, 2009 8:35 PM CDT reply actions

Pollard. Yup.

No seriously, I’m as surprised as everyone else. But I’m not going to burn my jerseys because Pollard was released. It’s not like he is a Pro Bowler. He’s a good tackler that can stuff the run but routinely got burnt in pass coverage. I can’t say that we’re better now not having him on the team, but if you get in a fight with a coach these guys aren’t going to put up with it.

The reshaping of the roster is far from over. Deep-sixing Pollard doesn’t throw the train off the rails.

How about NAVY by the way? Proud of them today, gave those Buckeyes a scare :)

Haley wasn't the head coach then

Now he has the power.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

Plus

Anquan was a Pro Bowl caliber receiver on a team making a playoff push. Pollard is an average safety during the preseason on a team that won 2 games last season.

Patriots released an O tackle with some starting experience.....

Anyone want to bet on him landing here soon? Name was Ryan O’Callahan….

I gotta agree with Babb

in the Star. It might rankle people to see Pollard go, and to see so many O lineman cut, but Pioli and Haley aren’t settling for the same ol’ crap. That alone satisfies me. Pollard’s cut was a surprise, but do you really think if he stayed he’d make the difference between a win and a loss for this team? I think it’s more likely that by cutting him they’ve moved us one step closer to being a better team. That is all that matters.

And I’ve never liked Lelie, even though he has looked good a few times this preseason those happened against 2nd and 3rd teamers.

by Big Chief on Sep 5, 2009 11:19 PM CDT reply actions

I actually didn't vote

because none are truly shocking. Even with Pollard, the writing was on the wall.

I think Haley sent a huge message to this team.

The media have been saying since Haley go hired that is was only a matter of time before he got into it with a player on the side lines. What player is going to argue with Haley now?

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

Who voted for Greenwood or Gales?

Seriously, if AP had a vote on “What color is the sky”, blue would get 89% of the votes

And so, Craig finds himself leaping from blog to blog, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap, will be the leap home.

flabbergasted

OK… so I knew they’d surprise me.
But, cutting Lelie and keeping Copper.
and cutting Pollard.

WTF?

I can’t wait to see who they can bring in. So help me, God, if they bring in a WR and DON’T cut Copper, I don’t know what I’ll do.

I am having trouble imagining how the WR or OL will come together.
I still stick to my point that they can bring in a FA to play on the team… but it’s tough to bring in a new starter at this point.

My guess is that the starters are on the team, and they will grab waiver wire for depth and future starters.

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

Uhhhh

What the hell is going on in KC????

I’m telling myself Pioli has a big pickup/trade coming…cause i dont want to go into week 1 this confused.

Seriously, the WR issue still has NOT been addressed. Lelie was really the only solid compliment to Bowe. Toomer wasn’t even given a chance.
The right side of the O-Line is a joke, and tossing Pollard was probably the biggest mistake the defense made all year.

All I can say is WOW…its going to be a long ass season people.

by chiefnyc on Sep 6, 2009 10:58 AM CDT reply actions

Several surprised -

Lelie was fast and had exp plus looked good in preseason games

Thonas was a vet brought in for his tackling and exp

No one ever said Brown was hurt

But Pollard was the craziest move.

Bonecrusher led KC in tackles with 96 last year. He was always a threat to block punts on STs. Pollard’s hard hits intimidated opponents. He prevented many TDs.

In my opinion, Pollard was KC’s best defensive player.

Some say he wasn’t as good at pass coverage. But Derrick Thomas wasn’t as good at pass coverage and vs the run as he was at pass rushing. DT was “one-dimensional” , yet he is in the NFL Hall of Fame. Having a big hitter on a defense should not have been underestimated.

by WarWolf on Sep 6, 2009 11:22 AM CDT reply actions

Pollard wasn't the KC Messiah or anything

I have no personal dislike for the guy. But his instincts and “football smarts” weren’t going to propel him to anything more than average at best.

His hard hitter style, with no real other outstanding abilities to compliment it, are akin to an NBA player who can leap and let fly some amazing dunks, but can’t really pass / shoot / make smart plays. It gets the crowd to “ooh” and “aah” sometimes, but at the expense of playing the game well over all.

We’re walking in the right direction with this move.

I’m a little fuzzy on the Lelie move, but my info there can’t be nearly as in depth as Pioli and Haley’s. I’ll trust their judgment on that one. The other moves all kind of make sense from the outside-in view that I, as a fan, have coupled with a general idea of what the front office has for a long term plan.

The main surprise to me is the amount of knee-jerk shock and “wtf” posts about Pollard.

(PS: and yes this is my first post, I’ve followed AP for a long time. Finally had to sub and chime in on this though.)

Thankya!

I’ve followed too many discussions here over the last year and some change, finally got around to chiming in.

Sure I’m outnumbered and out gunned being one of probably 4 Chiefs fans here in Nashville, land of the Titans. But that’s how we Chiefs fans like it!

Ehhh – no i think the “wtf” posts regarding Pollard are pretty validated given his role with KC throughout his career, but we’ll see. If Brown stays healthy I’m content.

by chiefnyc on Sep 6, 2009 12:31 PM CDT reply actions

Flip flopping.....

How quickly things change. We all wanted Pioli here to work the New England magic, and now that he has started, many cant take it. I questioned too many of his moves in New England to question him now. Pollard was solid at times, but he was sketchy. We all just fell in love with his upside. Zack Thomas was more of a shock for me. My biggest shock was definitely Lelie. He was looking really solid in is limited time.

by Enite on Sep 6, 2009 4:53 PM CDT reply actions

?

Wasn’t there a rumor last winter that a safety … Pollard?… might need surgery ( I’m thinking shoulder) and could be out for the year if he got it?
