Kansas City Chiefs Release Bernard Pollard, 12 Others
The Kansas City Chiefs have just announced the final round of cuts to get down to the league mandated 53 man roster.
Biggest shocker? Bernard Pollard. Wow.
| Offense | Defense |
| TE Tom Crabtree | CB Jackie Bates |
| G Darryl Harris | DE Dion Gales |
| WR Taurus Johnson | DE Bobby Greenwood |
| WR Ashley Lelie | DT Derek Lokey |
| RB Javarris Williams | S Bernard Pollard |
| WR Rodney Wright | LB Zach Thomas |
| G Colin Brown (IR) | S Ricky Price |
After the jump, we take a look at the circumstances surrounding each of the cuts.
The following were released:
S Bernard Pollard Wow. There were trade rumors recently and apparently they had some legs. This is far and away the most shocking move by the Chiefs. Frankly, I don't understand this move. This leaves DaJuan Morgan, who was injured for much of last season as a rookie, and Mike Brown, who has been injured much of the last five years, as your strong safeties.
CB Jackie Bates This shouldn't be much of a surprise. The Chiefs decided to keep five cornerbacks and it was down to Bates or Ricardo Colclough. Colclough has been a return man in the past and provides a little more experience. TE Tom Crabree It's not surprising, either. This leaves three tight ends on the Chiefs roster (Sean Ryan, Brad Cottam and Jake O'Connell). Crabtree had a couple of nice plays in last week's game against the Rams but ultimately it came down to a numbers game. Remember, the Chiefs gave up a draft pick in a trade to get O'Connell. DE Dion Gales A little surprised here. Gales didn't necessarily separate himself but the Chiefs will be a little low on defensive ends. DE Bobby Greenwood See above. I thought about the best chance he had to make the team was due to the low number of offensive linemen. Harris' name was rarely mentioned and ultimately proved to be expendable. WR Taurus Johnson Chiefs had a lot of wide receivers and, for a position where they needed playmakers, he apparently couldn't cut it. It doesn't help that he didn't return kicks and/or punts as well. WR Ashley Lelie A little surprising considering he showed a little promise and is one of the few Chiefs receivers with some experience. He's a fast receiver and the Chiefs don't really have that right now. DT Derek Lokey He was playing nose tackle behind Tank Tyler and Ron Edwards. It was going to be tough to beat out one of those guys. Again, a numbers game. He couldn't beat out Jon McGraw and starter Jarrad Page. LB Zach Thomas Rumored to be injured and looking at retirement. Apparently he was healthy enough for the Chiefs to part ways with him without an injury settlement. RB Javarris Williams The Chiefs 7th round draft pick and the only draftee released. He's certainly eligible for the practice squad. WR Rodney Wright 29 year old player who hasn't shown much thus far. Placed on Injured Reserve When did he have an injury? Behind Pollard, this is the second most surprising move. There were no indications he was injured. He was the team's fifth round draft pick.

Pollard
Must have been a negative player all summer.
I can’t believe he had no trade value.

COME ON!
I agree about the 4 QBs but that won’t last beyond a few weeks. Which Berand Pollard was you watchng for the last 2 years? The one that was out of position 90% of the time or the one that could not tackle 90% of the time.
The tackles he made were a product of bad DL and LB play. It hurts to be exposed to the truth but this move will have no impact on the Chiefs…unless Bernard changes the way he plays.

Nice job completely making up those numbers. It’s not Pollard’s fault the DL and LB play were terrible last season. This is a horrible mistake by the Chiefs. Even if they benched him, or just used him on special teams.

I have a feeling cutting Pollard is a big mistake. I do believe another team is going to jump on him fast and he will have a BIG year….
by Chiefsfan85 on Sep 5, 2009 5:57 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Dunno if he'll have a "BIG year"
but he’ll at least be a solid starter somewhere. Brown’s gonna get hurt at some point like he has for years and we’ll be missing Pollard.
Colin Brown to IR is kinda surprising too. When did he even get hurt?

its the ol'
fake an injury to keep a player that won’t pass through waivers routine….or they are making a small injury seem huge. They probably want to keep him and develop him next year but don’t see a use for him this year.

by JHWK on Sep 5, 2009 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not just homerism
The thing I think I see everyone missing here is something that Looney said early on today. It’s about who fits the 3-4 far more than it is the names. This is why a lot of the D line was cut and Pollard as well. Period.
There has been a bit of discussion on here about whether or not our backfield would be able to adjust to a 3-4 instead of the Tampon 2. This is a major answer to those debates we have had. Obviously most of the guys were able to make the transition. Pollard could not. They tried to move him and could not. So now he is gone. Doesn’t mean anyone here is a blind homer…just means Pollard didn’t fit the scheme. And yes, he will likely be playing elsewhere.

if he will be plaing elsewhere,,,
he has /some/ trade value. If that value wasn’t extracted, it’s a ding on Pioli, unless SP’s gonna grab critical talent, and fast, and needed the space.
Cassel vs. Thigpen in Camp should improve the play of both.

Which Berand Pollard was you watchng for the last 2 years? The one that was out of position 90% of the time or the one that could not tackle 90% of the time.
The tackles he made were a product of bad DL and LB play. It hurts to be exposed to the truth but this move will have no impact on the Chiefs…unless Bernard changes the way he plays.

unable to adjust to the 3-4
I think this is an example of a D-back who could play tampa 2 but did not adjust to a 3-4 scheme. Not to mention mouthy as hell.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
by Zodeman on Sep 5, 2009 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Pollard
was miscast in the tampa 2. Pollard is a traditional hard-hitting, run supporting Strong Safety. BUT you are right partially because he was unable to adjust to the 3-4.
SS’s in the 3-4 are used somewhat like the Cover 2. Not quite the same, but somewhat identical. Because there are 4 LB’s in the 3-4, theres less need for support by a SSafety, so the SSafety tends to be in coverage more often. This is why I think Brown and Morgan fit the position better. Morgan is also a hard hitter but he showed hes decent in coverage. Sure, theres the arguement that he played good in only one game, but I’m sure hes been making plays when he has been practicing.
Morgan was on the verge of being cut because he was injured through so much of training camp. But he got healthy, got on the field and made an impact. He got into a game and made an impact. Hes only a 2nd year player, so I think he deserves to be looked at. Brown is a balanced guy (hitter, coverage) and Morgan will benefit him more than Pollard.
BUT…I dont think you cut Pollard in the process. Not quite yet. But, in all fairness, hes better fit for a traditional 4-3 defense as a SS. Something that would fit in Gunthers system (the Cover 2 that Gunther ran under Herm is NOT his system)
Pollard to the Lions. Out of the division, out of the conference. No problem to us.

Keep in mind the calculations being made by other teams...
… in particular, that Pollard would probably be waived by the Chiefs, anyway. His main trade value would’ve come from a team with Pollard Man-Love, who were too far down the waiver wire line to get him. This maybe just tells us what the rest of the league maybe has felt about Pollard, all along…

McBride looked like a beast a few times in Vrabel’s spot, too. I can EASILY see Vrabel sliding over into the middle, or even to the weak side, now, because I think the Chiefs might need more help in those spots, now. It’d likely be bad for Vrabel’s sack numbers, but with Thomas out, I can DEFINITELY see a role for Vrabel at ILB, now.

Pioli and Brady
Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but I wonder as close as Brady and Pioli are if he was dead set against getting rid of Pollard after losing his star Quarterback Last year and still had the bad taste left in his mouth.. Either wasy this was a mistake.
by bradvan on Sep 5, 2009 6:08 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
that makes no sesne, Pollard will still end up one someone's roster
If that was the case Pioli would keep Pollard on the bench and not cut him so he can go somewhere else and take out Cassel
2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB
5. Todd Haley won't make a poster and jump around holding it up welcoming the Chiefs players to summer camp, I mean TRAINING camp

Good point.
I don’t think it’s the blowup, per se. I think the blowup may’ve been a symptom of the negative undercurrent.
Remember the Boldin blowup. If the player’s passionate about winning football, I think he can look Haley in the eye and disagree with him, and remain in his good graces. My sense was that the blowup was more about Pollard and less about winning football.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

The Report
I seen said after he had the yelling match, he pleaded with Haley, and Haley waived him off. Sounds more like Pollard may have wanted it HIS way rather than something that could have been worked out with the coach. Sounds like Haley agreed with Pender. Hard to say. Its all speculation. It’s not the end of this team or the world.

This isn't a fantasy league, guys
Detroit doesn’t drop to the bottom of the waiver queue after they claim someone. Waivers go by record. As such, Detroit will always have the first opportunity to claim a player.
If we put in a waiver claim on 10 guys and Detroit claims the same 10 guys, the Lions are going to get them.
And we claimed Guiterrez from the Patriots, remember? If it worked like you’re suggesting, we’d be right down near the bottom anyway.

Gutierrez would have cleared waivers and could have been placed on the practice squad. One good preseason game by Morgan and suddenly he’s kept over a guy who has 4 years of starting experience and is only 24 years old? What about every other game Morgan’s ever played and been terrible?

Bottom Line
Pioli’s job is on the line, our entertainment is on the line. He sees a lot of stuff that we don’t see. We bring in the best GM in the biz and the second he makes a controversial decision he is suddenly a hack? He wants locker room chemistry…why waste that for an average safety? This guy has been doing this for years and we’re supposed to trust him to build a winner for us.

I dont mind that he's gone.

let me ask you this
if you were a GM and you became aware of a team tring to sell a player a week or so before massive cuts, what would you think? i’d take my chances and wait because if he’s cut i can get him for free. if he’s not than i can trade for him afterwards. pollard was like a pocket Jack/9 suited. you get that and your thinking you are sitting fat and happy. than the flop comes and it’s a 2/7/10 all off suit. you got the 10 so you’re thinking you can still pull out the straight so you see the turn. it’s a 5. suit doesn’t matter at this point. you start to feel nervious because your chances of pulling that straight aren’t too good now. your opponite, if they have any skill, knows that you have nothing and are probably chasing a straight so they call your bluff. i use poker because every GM is trying to outplay each other. while this is just speculation, there is a chance that pioli held on to him to long hopeing he’d pan out, but when he didn’t he lost that hand so he was forced to cut him.

I'm guessing
a deal fell through or we have an agreement behind closed doors that the lions or rams will let another player pass them in the waiver wire in exchange of us cutting pollard. Or every other team has realized that he is about himself instead of the team.
by 1kmilesfromkc on Sep 5, 2009 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
plus
which sends a stronger statement to the team-trading a player that was a cancer in the locker room or CUTTING HIM AND SENDING HIM TO DETROIT via the waiver wire.

Unless other NFL teams know we're going to cut him
Then he has zero trade value.
by Joel Thorman on Sep 5, 2009 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you, but still think we can question
There is no track record here and brilliant men have done stupid things before. See Bellicheck’s Cleveland stint. I scratch my head on this one. Not because we cut him, but because we let him go for free.
I can’t believe that there wasn’t a 7th rounder out there at least, but Pioli does wheel and deal with the best so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt
by mushin on Sep 5, 2009 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
So you think Pioli got offered a pick
and decided he’d just rather cut the guy?
We got no offers for him. Lets try to deal with teh reality that the rest of the league didn’t want him enough to give us a pick.

I keep hearing that we had limited time
BUT…based on everything else our new management does, we find out, days after the fact exactly how long it has been brewing. Who knows. Pollard may have been out there a bit. BUT….with his name being obviously WELL connected with the injury of one of the leagues BEST QB’s, I find it hard to swallow that someone did NOT jump on Bernard if given the chance. Maybe the “professional” evaluaters of football talent did not see anything in him to warrant any kind of a transaction. Just my opinion. I could be wrong.

not the only one that took offense against a coach? Did he not practice hard one day and not the next ( from what I read, he didnt! ) This is a yo yo player~ one that gives it his all one day ( when he sees fit ) and doesnt the other~ Coach went on record way before his yelling at a coach, and said that exact thing
NO YO YO PLAYERS~ yes POLLARD was a yo yo player, not in skill but in giving to the TEAM what coach wanted DAY IN AND DAY OUT!
sorry, but i am NOT out of my mind, and im not going to yo yo with you on the subject!
POLLARD is and was a yo yo player in the chiefs mindset~ if he wasnt, he

But Morgan prob’ly has better coverage skills. With the front 7 playin’ stout, I want more coverage skills and anticipation from safety, and not just a durable guy who will reduce the level of embarrassment on a bad team. - CB Jackie Bates – NO SURPRISE
- TE Tom Crabree – NO SURPRISE
- DE Dion Gales – NO SURPRISE
- DE Bobby Greenwood – NO SURPRISE
- G Darryl Harris – NO SURPRISE
- WR Taurus Johnson – NO SURPRISE – though I was rootin’ for ’im. Still might make PS.
- WR Ashley Lelie – a surprise. Probably mentality and learning curve make him a liability?
- DT Derek Lokey – NO SURPRISE
- S Bernard Pollard – NO SURPRISE – although I hoped there’d be some trade value.
- S Ricky Price – NO SURPRISE
- LB Zach Thomas – NO SURPRISE – but I was holding out hope that they were just trying to keep him healthy.
- RB Javarris Williams – NO SURPRISE – wasn’t gettin’ touches.
- WR Rodney Wright – NO SURPRISE
Placed on Injured Reserve
- G Colin Brown – As others have said, this is probably to hide a not-yet-ready-for-primetime player of the future. They prob’ly would’ve kept him if they weren’t so desperate to get as many looks at as many linemen as possible.

All in all, some of the most heated arguing I've done, lately,

No reported injury on Brown and all of the sudden he’s on IR not even PuP. Thats fishy.

Not fishy. Pioliey
If the NFL didn’t make him tell them his name, he would just be known as the GM

PUP's not an option
Unless I’m wrong, you have to place players on PUP before training camp opens. Past that, it’s not an option.

just put Kolby on PUP this week...
I think it is before training camp is over
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Neither one makes a difference
Pollard has been overrated since he was drafted. Lelie just didn’t get it I guess I wanted him so suceed but didn’t happen. Really this makes us a better TEAM.
As in a WHOLE UNIT

in reality
with the 53 we have as of this minute…we are fighting for 3rd in the AFC West…6 wins would be a stretch…
Now i know there will be some moves before opening dat and this roster will look much different…but as of now…our team is horrible…sadly

What did you expect? Going from 2-14 to the Superbowl in a year?
That’s totally unrealistic. Pioli isn’t going to mortgage the future. He is building a 53 man team that is built to win in January. You can’t get that done in one season. And there is no doubt this team is better than last year’s.
Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

Rosenhaus still saying Thomas wants to play even after the release.
But he probably has to to even apply for an injury grievance.

Mike Brown
will not play a full season. Our house is a Chiefs/Bears house and I have been watching him for years. He is an exciting player for sure. He will miss games. This is not an endorsement for Pollard.
by Ripley on Sep 5, 2009 7:29 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yup
If they think Morgan can play like he did in the preseason every game that Brown misses then they are in for a surprise….

Is this a possibility with the waivers....
that IF he makes it past detroit and st louis we can resign him….like what haley did to bowe, just EXTREME?

That be an even more colossal waste
of time and effort than cutting him in the first place.

Also....
At least this makes the JA trade better value to us in the end…keeping morgan, a pick from that trade.

You know...
Lately, the way we have performed in preseason, I really don’t see the chiefs doing well, not even average. Honestly things have worried me, including not scoring any TDs against 1st team defenses. I wouldn’t be suprised to see us picking top 5 again.
Hey good thing there is Mizzou football.

Bad Move
Pollard isn’t a cocky player he’s an intense guy that isn’t afraid of anyone including the head coach, Haley is just to head strong and couldn’t handle him. It’s funny reading everyones comments about Pollard not being able to tackle, he was hands down the best tackler on the team, if you really want to see someone who can’t tackle watch film of how many tackles Page missed over the last 2 seasons. The sad part is the Chiefs not only get nothing in return for Pollard but they also lose one of the only players who actually played with some passion and heart over the last few shitty seasons. Think about it, how many guys have the Chiefs had on defense in the last 2 or 3 years that flew around hitting people like Pollard? I can only think of one Jared Allen, and sure he was out of position alot but he made plays and gave the fans something to cheer about. If Derrick Johnson played with the passion Pollard did he’d be playing in Pro Bowls. Well at least they still have Flowers and Carr in the secondary…………

Come on everyone, Pollard was the best of the worst (as Chef Ramsey would say). Obviously they see something in morgan that pollard didn’t have. To be honest pollard was basically playing a deep linebacker. He hits hard but how many recievers got open behind him, it seemd he forgot he was the LAST LINE OF DEFENSE. Don’t get me wrong I’m a bit shocked, but I prepared myself for this as soon as I heard he was on the trading block. I just went through the list of most notable cuts and there are a couple safeties we could look at, as for keeping four qb’s, well I think we’re gunna try to showcase one of them for a pick. In my opinion about Lelie though, that is kind of dissapointing. I thought we needed help at reciever since Darling went down on the IR. Lelie caught basically everything thrown his way over the preseason so what gives!? he’s fast and he caught the football!! WHAT DO YOU WANT TODD HALEY!!!?? WHAT THE HECK DO YOU WANT!!!???

I'm not pissed that we kept Morgan
I’m pissed that we A) gave Pollard up for nothing, and B) kept Mike “I need an exo-skeleton” Brown instead of Pollard.

HAHAHA
Some of you are still so attached to “hype” rather than “performance”.
Why are you mad that Pollard is gone? Because he hit someone really hard once and the CBS announcers told you that he was the “Bonecrusher” (oooooooohh)??? And because Herm told you he was good for 2 years? (Just like the rest of the team was gonna be good (“Get over it”))……. Pollard gave up WAY more big plays than he stopped. It is clear that this organization doesn’t give a **** about hype. I absolutely love it. Carl Peterson would have kept Pollard based on the presumption that he was “The Bonecrusher” and a shut down safety that everyone said “He could have been”….Just like Peterson signed Ty Law based on what he did 8 years earlier in his career…. clearly when he was past his prime. Listen. Pollard was a safety on a team that ACCIDENTALLY made the playoffs once, and went 6-26 for 2 seasons after. I don’t get why everyone is so attached to BAD players. I don’t care if he hits hard. He never had a concept of coverage, ALWAYS got made a fool of on play action, and frankly did nothing for a defense that finished in the basement of the league. FORGET ABOUT HIM. CLEARLY NOBODY IN THE NFL CARES ABOUT HIM…. or he would have had trade value.

almost 100 tackles is bad play,
Your so stupid, He was 3rd in the league in tacklesfor safeties last year. This just goes to show Todd Haley isnt a good coach. He let his personal feeling or Clancies get in the way of The Right 53. You cant be honestly happy that our starting safeties are going to be Page who is remarkably worse then Pollard, and Mike brown who gets injured every year. I dont care how much you dont like a guy, You dont just release him. I know one thing Im not buying any tickets to the Chiefs 3-13 season……By the way hell be on another team in a few days, probably the lions. Because they are 1st in the waiver order.

how do you know he's the right 53?
are you the coach? just because you like the guy doesn’t mean he was the right fit for the team.

Now hopefully this team is fun to watch again! Thanks Scott, Clark!!

Why are you jocking their nuts like this dude. What makes you7 think their proven. Pioli is from the belcheck tree and none of them were succesful. This is a dumb move to cut a guy who is in the top 10 safties in the league, Atleast keep him til the end of the year when his contract exspires then dont resign him if you dont want him. This was all because of the argue, ment. Haley put his emotions and pride in front of putting toegteher a talented football team. You keep on riding their nuts dude, Im not buying any tickets this year though. They got 1700 bucks out of me last year, They wont get a dime this year. Thanks cott oh thanks clark, your clueless dude. Hey maybe they will get on here and read your qoute man. This was a bad move for the Chiefs, exspecially when theier still trying to sell out the stadium.
