5 Predictions for the 09-10 Chiefs
1. Corey Mays and Tamba Hali will combine for 15 sacks, the majority of which will come in the 1st quarter
The 3-4 scheme and the high motors of these two men will create sacks, but they will tend to disappear in the later quarters as opposing offenses learn to account for them. The stat sheet will be prettier, but it's hard to imagine those 15 sacks changing games.
2. A fumbled punt or kick off catch will cost the Chiefs at least one game
I thought the reason that the special teams were in flux was because the Chiefs were looking for that guy on the team with the kick returner spark. The game breaker that will turn something into nothing and take it to the house. I was wrong. Todd Haley is looking for someone who can catch the damn ball. There has been a punt/kick-off fumbled in every preseason game. This is going to be a problem all year long. Please refrain from throwing things at your TV when the inevitbale happens.
3. The Chiefs are going to finish the season with the worst average starting field position in the league
4. Unless Tyler Thigpen makes his way into the starting lineup for extended time, KC will lead the league in sacks allowedI hate to make two predictions based on special teams, but they are just that bad. Gary Stills...Dante Hall where hath thou gone? The only hope for the return game is a waiver wire miracle or slipping food poisoning to the opposing special teams every week. I hope the offense has been practicing their 90 yard drives during situational football.
The problems on the right side of the line are well documented. What hasn't been discussed as much is how both Matt Cassel and Brodie Croyle hold onto the ball too long looking for open receivers. I appreciate they both want to make plays, but what we have here is a recipe for disaster. This doesn't mean I'm advocating for Thigpen. Tyler starts staring at his intended WR as he walks to the huddle and doesn't look away until he completes a pass to him, throws a pick, or bolts down the field running for his life. Thigpen will take less sacks, but that won't translate into more wins.
5. Mr Irrelevant will be the most relevant fantasy football player on the Chiefs
The Chiefs are going to move the ball this year between the 20's, but the red-zone is going to be a disaster. Penetration into the backfiedl by opposing defenses around the goal line is going to disrupt the running and passing game all year. Succop is going to be a busy man this year. He's going to miss a few, but at the end of the day I believe he has the mental makeup it takes to be a NFL kicker. With a name like Succop, he better be mentally tough. If only his dad had named him Sue, he might be a starting LB.
At the end of the sesason we will see an improved Chiefs team, but 3-13 is an improvement. Improvement isn't going to mean a whole lot to the final record. Is see a more resilient and better conditioned team than the train wreck that KC fielded last year. They should win a couple of those close games that slipped away under Herm's watch. At the end of the day though, the holes on this team are just too big. 5-11 will be a successful campaign. Hard core Chiefs fans should probably invest in the College Football package to get ready for next year's draft. The Chiefs will have a top 10 pick again. I hate to be a pessimist. I bleed Chiefs Red and Gold everytime they lose. But realistically I think I'll need to keep the local blood bank on speed dial.
Please refrain from beating wives and children this year. It isn't their fault.
Thank God for beer. HOW BOUT THEM CHIEFS!!!!!

also the return men never got a chance to do anything because the blocking was so horrible that there is 8 dudes in the face when the ball gets there

Good Observations
While a bit gloomy, I pretty much agree with your analysis. Wrecked. Thanks for this…
"Every day is an evaluation and if you’re not out there how can we depend on you? If you’re out there and you don’t know what to do, how can we depend on you?" Accountability -- Haley-style...

I don't think Thigpen will even make the final cuts.
Special teams is pretty pathetic though. We need some help there for sure. At least the kick coverage team is good. Maybe we can give our opponents crappy field position all day too….kind of even things up.
This offensive line (as bad as it is) is still better than most of the folks on AP think. The starters actually played well last night although they were pulled out of the game early.
Rt is the only real position of need. As long as we fix that, the rest of the line will be fine. (until next years draft)

I actaully think RG and C are bigger question marks than RT
The game where Richardson was bashed was a prime example. Yes Richardson looked bad, but Goff and Niswanger were getting split time after time. I hope Cassel has good life insurance.

I'll buy that Mushin.
I think the Miami duo will step in very soon and those guys will be relieved of their starting duties. We still need a RT though. Mcintosh and Richardson are just not good enough. They will both do well for a few plays and then they just let somebody get through for a sack. Inconsistency is the problem at that spot.

mushin - Whats your take
on Wade Smith at Center? Every time i looked at the o-line, he was snapping the ball. Maybe like some have posted already, more likely to make the cut if he is serviceable at multiple positions.
Does this spell trouble for either Rudy N. or Eric G.?

To tell the truth, I haven't watched the center as muchas I've watched the RT
I didn’t get to watch the 2nd half either. I woke up at 7AM to catch what I could of the game before I had to scurry off to work. From what I’ve seen he’s been a servicable blocker, and an upgrade in many ways. The problem I see is that he just isn’t as savy with directing the line as Rudy or Eric. So you get to choose between a guy who knows what needs to be done but keeps getting blown off the ball or a guy that can hold his own but isn’t as good at directing traffic. Having Waters to his left should help, but at this point he appears to be O-line depth.

Oh and Thigpen will make the final cuts if only for trade value
If he hits the waiver wire he’ll be a hot commodity. Even with his preseason play, the Chiefs should be able to get a late round pick for him. I’m not convinced that he won’t be on the team, but if he’s not Pioli will do everything in his power to get some return value for him.

Thigpen sealed his fate last night and throughout this preseason.
Waiver Wire bound in my opinion.

It's hard to find a #3 with successful starter experience
And if his ribs are broken you have to account for it. I think Brodie is the back-up, but overreacting to the preseason can be hazardous to your team.
I’ve said it before and will say it again. Last year about this time the NE fan base was ready to run Cassel out of town on a rail. 10 wins and $60 million later he’s a starter in the league.

Yeah we'll see..
I just think Gut fits the profile of a number 3 for this offense a little more apropriately.
With that in mind the logical thing to do would be to trade him but I feel like they’ve tried to showcase him and unfortunately he played himself out of a trade.
They may be forced to cut him assuming they want to keep only 3 QB’s, which I venture is a fair assumption.

You sure called thigpen not making the final cuts.....
by CALIFAN1986 on Sep 7, 2009 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You misread. I said Thigpen would survive the final cuts.
I still think he’s the odd man out if they drop a QB. If Pioli and Haley like Gutirrez releasing him would be a mistake. You have to imagine that QB hungry Denver would snatch him up. The Jets also put a claim on Gut when NE let him go. He is not making it to the practice squad.
I could see a scenario where KC holds onto 4 QBs for a month or more waiting for injuries to present them with a trade opportunity. Especially since they face Balt, Philly and NYG who are three of the best teams in the league at beating up on opposing QB’s.
What we need to watch for is what 3 QB’s KC makes active for the game. This will speak louder than any prediction I can give.

DBowe will have the most fantasy impact
then the Chiefs D versus the Raiders and Broncos
then Succop
by Your_Moms_Boyfriend on Sep 4, 2009 11:27 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He will have more fantasy points than Succop, but Succop has potential to be top 5 kicker
Bowe will be a solid WR for your fantasy team, but he isn’t going to win a championship for you. Succop will be one of the best at his position, which is all you can ask for from any player. 3 FG’s a game is damn good for a kicker

Agree about D-Bowe but, I suspect LJ is going to have a HUGE season as well.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 4, 2009 11:29 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Succup top 5 kicker. LJ will be top 20 RB
Lots of points, but he won’t be in the upper echelon of RB’s. They’ll be a few RB’s that will get fewer touches and more points than LJ. Leon Washington and Felix Jones come to mind. Unless Bradley and Engram can help Bowe loosen up defenses, LJ is in for a mediocre year. Which is still a vast improvement over last year.

My favorite saying about fantasy football.
“Fantasy Football is like Dungeons and Dragons for guys who used to beat up guys for playing Dungeons and Dragons”

Boy this is a bit negative
Chiefs 2009. Believe.
by focs on Sep 4, 2009 11:59 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
It is negative, but it's what I objectively think
In my heart I believe the Chiefs will go 10-6 and make it to the second round of the playoffs, but if I look at the Chiefs with my head like I would any other team, I have to say this is how it’s going to be. The Rams looked eerily similar to the Chiefs last night in many respects. Couldn’t get the offense going. Had trouble putting pressure on the KC QB unless scheme or blown assignment was involved. Took two steps back for every step forward. If I applied these predictions to the Rams would you even blink?
Teams come together and outperform what they have done in the past, but when you make a prediction you have to base it on the information you have, not on the information you wish you had.
