Goodbye Tyler Thigpen

via cdn1.sbnation.com

I'm still working on this Tyler Thigpen retrospective post for tomorrow morning and I came across this picture, one of my favorites of the Kansas City Chiefs #4.

In terms of sheer entertainment value, I've discovered I owe a whole lot to Thigpen for making the 2008 at least occasionally watchable.

Consider this an open thread for the evening. I'm watching this Ken Burns National Park special on PBS now. It's awesome. For some reason, I'm fascinated by pictures of people from the late 19th, early 20th century. Nobody smiles. It's a bit odd.

Nobody smiled because

exposure times on cameras were so long that nobody could hold a straight smile long enough to complete the photo. Well that’s my guess at least.

That was my guess too

I was in India twice last year and nobody smiled there either.

I bet you’re right.

I think it's because they didn't have cable or the Internet

and they had to be with their family all the time. :)

Yes, that is correct.

And, they didn’t have the NFL.

Thigpen was my favorite Chiefs quarterback since Joe Montana

I’m sad to see him go, and I hope he lights it up in Miami. I would’ve been perfectly content going into this season with Thiggy at QB, but it wasn’t to be.

by HTrayne on Sep 30, 2009 9:22 PM CDT reply actions

Couldn't agree more

Yeah, he made mistakes, but he was a lot of fun to watch. I’m glad to see him go, just so he has the chance at playing which I fully think he deserves. I would have been happy to have him this season if only we had an o-line that would have kept him from having to keep running for his life. He’s a player whose career I would continue to follow even though he’s no longer a Chief.

by Jawookie on Sep 30, 2009 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

As For Thigpen

I suspect he’ll be the starter for that team in a few weeks, once he’s picked up the offense. Because I think Henne is going to end up being a bust. He wasn’t that good of a QB at Michigan…Mike Hart was the guy who made that offense run.

The Chiefs are ---

getting rid of everyone on my hat (River Falls autographs) . Only Haley and Croyle are left! Thigpen will always be a Chief though far as I’m concerned. He really did make last year watchable. The Jets fans were dumbfounded while he was outplaying Favre.

by route 66 on Sep 30, 2009 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

I'll give the guy credit

I can’t remember the last player who was able to have such a turn around in just one season. His first couple of games he was Ryan Leaf/Jamarcus Russell bad. He looked way worse than any Chiefs QB I can remember seeing. But once Tony G and Chan worked on him he really turned it around. Later in the season it seemed like a miracle to see that team moving the ball so effectively. Now, I’m sure some of that was because we looked so incredibly awful as we went through QBs early last season. (All you naysayers out there, do you really remember where we were this time last season? I thought we’d have to sign about 20 QBs to get through the year!). But he went from being a joke to showing he could actually make some things happen.

The other thing Thigpen has going for him is that he came across as such a likeable guy, so unassuming (especially for a skeleton rapist). He has a bit of the Favre quality that’s so rare in QBs – like a regular guy that it would be fun to sit with and drink a beer or six.

Farewell Tyler. You did make last year interesting.

Perfect compliment

That was a great compliment, no need to apologize for the length.

He was the only reason that it was enjoyable to watch the Chiefs. You knew the defense wasn’t going to do much when the got on the field (with a few exceptions), so watching Bones run the offense was the best part of the season…

I really do wish him well. Like other folks on here, I fully expect him to be starting in 2-4 weeks. The Phins will probably be trying to figure out how to get him in for a few wildcat plays even before he becomes their starter.

"Every day is an evaluation and if you’re not out there how can we depend on you? If you’re out there and you don’t know what to do, how can we depend on you?" Accountability -- Haley-style...

by Chief_Elmo on Oct 1, 2009 7:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, the truth is

without Thigpen, last year would have been an absolute disaster. He made the season worth watching. It was the right move though.

and it said the first thing Thigpen said was he wanted to compete for the starter.

messed up yo

I never thought he was very good, but he clearly tried his best. I didn’t want him as our starter but I still wish him well.

It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.

Really! That's all you can say!

This guy gave us 110% everytime he was in there. There was no other QB that could do so much with so little last year. He had his flaws but always seemed to play to his strengths and I think he would be great in an offense designed for him.

I wish him all the best in Miami. I just hope he doesn’t come back to dominate us ala Rich Gannon. Thigpen was a likeable guy who played his heart out. I think if we had kept Tony G. and brought in a regime that was focused on making him a starter, he could have been a star!

Best wishes Cuatro! I thank you for making the last 4 home games that I went to last year, watchable and fun, even without a win.

It is a new Era at Arrowhead. I do not yet know if it is one of greatness or one of ineptitude. I am excited to see which way it goes, and will support my team until the end, bitter or sweet!

I was at that Jets game...

I remember telling my father we shouldn’t even go because I don’t feel like watching them lose 34-0 again. The only reason I went was because I wanted to see Favre and because after all, I’m a Chiefs fan. I remember us saying we couldn’t believe Pigpen was starting and how awful the team was….By the end of that game we were both amazed how he played. My father and I talked for hours on the ride home about how this guy literally went from awful to really good in an afternoon. That throw to Bradley was a great one, right in front of us for the TD. I’ll miss Thigpen, but I’ll root hard for him, because after all, he gave us a lot of heart, effort and excitement. Good luck Tyler!

I'm surprised the Thigpen fans aren't blaming this year on Cassell and Croyle

Last year they ostracized anyone that criticized a 1-win QB.

They spoke about how he DESERVED to start this year.

They accused us of calling him a “bum” (totally untrue btw). I’m glad he went to Miami. I’ve said Pennington has had a glass jaw since his 2 injuries playing at the Jets.

I hope Thigpen starts in Miami, I really do. Let the Coastal Carolina rooster show what he’s got on another team. At least that way they can’t blame the rest of the (Chiefs)offense from last year. He starts, I predict 1-2 wins in Miami until the end of the year.

At least he’ll make them “Competitive”…{rolls-eyes}

3 GAMES!

3 games is hardly enough to blame an entire year on a QB!

All you thigpen haters can now take your BS and negativity somewhere else. Oh yeah, you are probably the ones pushing to bench Cassell and go with Croyle!

Well, they have been

And now’s the prime opportunity for those that claim he is/was the second coming of Gannon or Green. Personally, I never saw it from his play.

Here’s his opportunity to prove himself with a decent line (since that was their prime argument) as well as with a number of more “capable” receivers instead of just TG (another argument on their end)…so there’s no more excuses.

He now has the opportunity to compete for a starting spot since their “franchise” QB is down. Deja vu all over again.

As general as yours about benching Cassell for Croyle?

Thigpen’s gone. Hopefully we recieved a good pick for him, say a 4th would be very decent and a 5th would be acceptable.

Not true.I for one wouldn't bench Cassell for Croyle...

…but OTOH, I’d take any of the Vikings backup QB’s over all of our backup QB’s including Thigpen.

Maybe

I think Jackson has potential. I really like Cassell intangibles though. I think if he gets some playing time he is going to be a star. I am just scared if Cassell goes down, Croyle will follow soon and then all we have is Gut.

I would have liked to have thigpen if this scenario played out, but then again he DIDN’T fit into our future plans.

Wasn’t tryin to argue back and forth. Just trying to make my opinions heard and make remarks to yours. I apologize if I got out of line.

Honestly, if Croyle follows Cassell, I wouldn’t see him going down “easily” this time. I still vividly recall that helmet to helmet hit against the Ravens. I thought “oh-oh”…but he got up and shook it off.

And I’ll throw this out at you…if it comes to that: We’ll get someone like Jeff Garcia. I know, I know, not that any of us want to get to that point.

Miami has now lost their franchise QB and acquired a QB that doesn’t even know their plays and needs to develop even before starting to compete. They are at least 3-4 weeks behind us from a QB perspective. They’re done for the year unless their rookie pulls a Flacco.

Wasn’t tryin to argue back and forth. Just trying to make my opinions heard and make remarks to yours. I apologize if I got out of line.

No need to apologize. I’ve posted a number of times to a lot of threads that:
“We’re all on the same team here” and we’re all frustrated since every team in our division (including the Seahwaks) have been to the show after us.

I don't understand about people saying Croyle can take a hit now.

He hasn’t taken any hits that QB’s don’t take all the time, People are just surprised because it’s Croyle.

I apologize if I got out of line.

What Truth said…it’s a frustrating season so far and I think a lot of us are on edge so it happens sometimes. You’re okay though and we’re glad you’re chipping in with what you think, so by all means keep it up.

So Long Bones

I was not one of the Thigpen fans, but yes He was the only reason the Chiefs were interesting at all last year. The truth of things are simple He not longer fit the offense the Chiefs are going to run. However I think the phins will be a good fit for Him, He should be able to compete and possibly win the starter job there where he had no chance here. I can’t say anything bad .about Bones and wish him luck unless We are playing against him.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

I’m a Chiefs fan Dammit and I’m damn proud of it!
