Pioli can't have it both ways.
First, I liked that Pioli and Haley were hired and I also know that it is going to take more than one off season to fix the mess that Herm created. With all the changes that happened yesterday, it made me wonder about somethings.
Pioli has said in interviews that most of the players we are cutting aren't getting picked up by other teams and that says a lot about the talent that was on this team. But like the title says he can't have it both ways because also the players he has been picking up have also been sitting at home waiting for someone to call. Other people on here have said it also, that it just seems like we are just trading players nobody wants for other players nobody wants.
I do understand what Pioli is trying to do, he did have some success with finding players that didn't do well with other teams and did good in NE. We are going into the 4th week of the season and we have 3 new players on our starting roster and it doesn't seem like they are done yet. At some point the players have to become a team, get to know the player next to you and be able to trust that they will do their job. The reason I say this is that there were times in the Eagles game that they only had 4 players rushing and we had 7 players in to protect and we still didn't stop them, I don't care how talented a team is, 7 players should be able to stop 4 players every time.

I see what your getting at
but possibly, the ones he is getting rid of may have something to do with attitude also? As my signature line reads….

haha...if the Chiefs go 12-1 the rest of the season I guess your right!

Dont Worry
I know it sucks and it looks like there were many moves Pioli could have made to make us better immediately. But you have to think….“Isnt Pioli doing he best to live up to his rep and mold us into a winning organization”…..Pioli could have stayed with the Patriots or went with a better looking squad. He chose the Chiefs because its a challenge. Its not gonna happen overnight. Sure I would love to win some games but his method is getting better through the draft while patching holes with veterans and journymen.

I agree with you that is why I wrote the first paragraph.
But at some point the players have to learn to work together. The line has to learn to trust the guy next to him just like the QB has to trust a WR to be in the right place for the ball.

True...
BUT…..you can be the most trusting teammates in the world but if you dont have the talent to block the guys coming for your QB it wont matter.

it drives me crazy how people talk about trades
as though the only one who is needed to make a trade is scott pioli. it takes a willing partner and an acceptable price. some people say stuff like “trade larry johnson!” but then say stuff like “he’s washed up” so tell me, who wants a washed up running back and is willing to give you something good in return. i know we just want talent and don’t care how we get it but the logic of “give us a bunch of good stuff and take our junk off our hands” drives me crazy. i know that’s not what you’re necessarily saying here but i know some people act like all he has to do is call up a team and say “i’ll take your best player and i’ll give you a 3rd round draft pick” and, boom, it’s all fixed.

yeah...but
we do have some decent talent here that would interest some teams. It’s not like we are a complete disaster…okay sort of, but if you look at our team we definitely have some tradeable players that would gather some interest throughout the league. Will we be able to bring top dollar/draft picks/studs. I doubt it, but we could at least think about it.

Exactly
People are acting like it’s the school playground. Ok, I’ll have Peyton Manning and the whole Steelers OL in exchange I’ll give you this half chewed gummy bear, the answers to last weeks history test and a wedgie.

In general they are becoming a team...
It’s not like he’s really making many changes to the starting 22 or to the players who are regularily on the field. He’s changing the players in the bottom third of the roster in hopes to find something better then what we have.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
2 major problems
I agree with your sentiment but there are 2 major problems with the team this year.
1) The OL sucks and when the OL sucks both the running game and passing game struggle. Give Pioli and Haley another offseason or 2 to fix the OL and you’ll see a much better team. Now if you want to complain about Pioli picking up Cassel for tons of money and putting behind a horrible OL then I’m right there with ya! All I can figure is that he thinks Cassel is a rare find, someone you can’t just yank out of the draft. Learning behind Tom Brady isn’t the kind of learning experience just any old college QB is going to have so there’s some logic to it. I don’t know that I totally buy into it but I’m willing to give Pioli & Haley time to prove their theory.
2) The defense totally changed but the majority of the personnel didn’t. One of the real key positions for a good 3-4 defense is a good NT and quite frankly we don’t have one yet. A 3-4 NT has to take on 2 blockers just about all the time and still not get pushed around which isn’t easy and finding players who can do that isn’t easy either. Lokk at Pittsburgh and notice when they get a good NT they hold on to him for years. Since 1988 the Steelers have had 4 different NTs and one of those was just a fill in for 1 year due to an injury. Of course having good LBs is also important. So our 3-4 defense is going to struggle until we get the right personnel. Again, give them 2 or 3 more offseasons to get the right people.
i can tell you right now tamba needs to go and i know more than anyone on here
i have pleaded for this guy but he just doesnt have the speed off the edge we need we have no pass rush. we need a DEATH MACHINE ON THE END. A GUY WHO THE ENTIRE OFFENSE KNOWS IS COMING AND THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT. LOOK UP THE MEANING OF DT STANDS FOR DEATH THOMAS.
FOUR F'S FIND UM FEEL UM FUGUM FORGET UM.
Yeah...
but we are way too thin as it is at OLB to cut Hali. He isn’t completely inept. He plays the run well and he has got to the QB a few times. I bet we use both our 2nd rounders on rush linebackers.

This hit the nail on the head.
Pioli has said in interviews that most of the players we are cutting aren’t getting picked up by other teams and that says a lot about the talent that was on this team. But like the title says he can’t have it both ways because also the players he has been picking up have also been sitting at home waiting for someone to call.
While I didn’t like some of his decisions, it wasn’t until that statement that I began to dislike him. I found it to be self-serving and class-less. Add to that the fact that he’s made changes, not improvements and I have to wonder what made him think he had room to brag.
Further more, most of the players he brought in as help are now sitting at home waiting for teams to call. I’m beginning to believe that if two players are similar in talent, the Pioli guy gets to play. Brown is not better than Pollard. Ryan or Whoever is not better than Cottam. Same goes with the O-line. Or if they are better, it certainly isn’t by much.
I’m very disappointed in Pioli right now. I did not expect everything to be fixed in one season. I did expect a better product on the field this season than I have seen so far.
We’ve started but there’s a lot more ground to cover and we will. As this ends today we’re not done improving this football team. There is going to be a lot of things that happen with other teams and with other people. There are going to be a lot of other opportunities.
Have we gotten (noticably) better as a team since April 26th?
Why...
are you so offended by that comment? How in the hell do you see that as self serving? And Brown is better than Pollard. He is a proven player that does his job. People, we are trading scrubs for scrubs right now. Thats what teams do that are in our situation. We are going to suck this season. There is no pro-bowl talent available. Get over it.

There was no reason for the comment other than, "Look at me."
No reason to throw those players under the bus.
Brown was once better than Pollard. I haven’t seen it yet this season.
Pro-Bowl talent was available, it obviously isn’t now, though it seems we are sifting for it.
I’ll not get over it, but thank you for the kind recommendation.

Agreed it was a bad statement to make.
As to the scrubs, some scrubs fit a system bettter than others.
If we are dropping a TE that can’t block for another that can’t block BUT does catch better it is an upgrade.
If we drop a a TE for a an ILB that is an upgrade.
Not all of the upgrades were at the same position.
Thigpen for a G/T, not to mention, 2 players for 1 is an upgrade.
Scrubs that fit a position of need vs scrubs that we have plenty of already is an upgrade.

It wasn't a bad...
statement to make. I was pointing out the obvious. That people jump on Pioli for frivolous things. Like making him out to be an egomanic when all said is talent isn’t getting picked up. Look at me!!! Look at me!!! Read this comment!!! Whatever.

A statement Pioli didn't have to make
A can’t count how many self-motivated statements that Peterson made.
And a few were in Derrick Thomas HOF induction speech.
I would just think personnally that I would think about what I was saying.
just my opinion :)

"Proven" Player
All Brown has proven the last three years is that he can’t be depended on to stay healthy for a season.
And he’s five years older than Pollard…most of his career is behind him, not in front of him. Frankly, most of Pollard’s problems were apparently coachable and if Pioli’s and Haley’s approach to dealing with technique problems is to discard players if they weren’t “Pioli guys” rather than trying to correct their technique, then this team is going to continue to suck and they will probably fail in the rebuild.
And I completely agree with NJ…all I see this season is change for the sake of change, not improvement. And most of that change is nothing more than Pioli picking through Belichick’s scraps (scraps from a team that didn’t even make the playoffs last year, no less)…he’s barely looking outside of players that he has connections to.

Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.
That is because...
he is familiar with the players. Are you guys really laying up at night wondering how this team would be with freaking Pollard? And yes, Brown may not be as young and athletic as Bernard, but he is where he is suppose to be on the field. That is more than we can say for Pollard. But, hopefully that debate has passed. A lot of guys for changes sake has been due to the the scheme change to the 3-4.

Haven't lost a bit of sleep over Pollard.
While awake, I don’t understand the move. Scan everyone if you have a better player to take their place for all I care. That hasn’t been happening.
The TG trade? Does anyone really think the team is better off without him. Really? We’d likely be 1-2 or maybe even 2-1 with him on the team.
The 3-4 was a change for change’s sake also. One scheme is not better than the other. If it were they 2 schemes wouldn’t go in and out of vogue. The poor one would stay dead. That change kept us from addressing the O-line in the draft and made players learn new positions.

Change was needed but the defense is still bad.
I hope they come together, and start playing like a team.

The Chiefs seem to be sub Average in pressure and middle coverage
Now if we get better pressure and the middle of the field coverage improves, We might spring a “Leak” elsewhere. But you have to stop the bleeding to find out :)

Dude.
How can you sit there and try to think for one second you know more than Pioli on what is best for our team. He is only the NFL’s executive of the last freaking decade. Trust the dude! He didnt have much to work with and he is doing the best he can with the shit he took over.
"Hell yes I love my truck, but I want you to know, honey I love your love the most" - Eric Church
I disagree...
I like the 3-4 over the 4-3 because…
A. Its easier to find rush linebackers than 4-3 defensive ends
B. It gives confusion to the opposing team
C. Pioli has always worked with 3-4 personal, why wouldn’t he change to what he knows.
D. He won three rings with a damn good 3-4 defense and the Steelers have two rings with the same scheme. I think the reason for the multiple rings opposed to the Bucs, Colts, and Giants (maybe I’m too premature on this one) is because you can turn over the players a lot easier.
by I_Bleed_Red. on Sep 30, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions
I have always like the 3-4 staring when the Chiefs ran it before.
But to be good at the 3-4 you have to have some good players in a few key spots and we don’t have that.

All I can say is 3 games. We’ve played 3 whole games and two against probable championship game participants and possibly superbowl participants.

a team that didn't even make the playoffs last year, no less
I can’t argue that it isn’t true but I would assume players that have been around winning (albeit ONLY 11 games last year) has to be better than people that haven’t been around even a .500 team in 3 years. I would ask you to validate your last statement as fact, but I know it is only your opinion. How do you know who he’s looking at? Do you have some inside information that no one else has? Please share if you do. I know he is signing mostly people with whom he or Haley has familiarity with but I don’t see how it’s a bad thing. Even if you end up with a wash in talent, the fact the players they are bringing in know what they are supposed to do can potentially show on the football field. I’m pretty sure also that Pollard was coached at all the OTA’s and training camp (not to mention his first 3 years) and at some point, it becomes obvious a player isn’t getting it so you make a decision.

You have a problem with the players we're bringing in because they're "scraps"
Yet you are still bitching and moaning over Pollard who was also clearly scraps because no one wanted him for 4 weeks after he was dumped?

Agreed
I like seeing that we are not just sitting around doing nothing. Sure were bringing in scrubs, but at least we are constantly trying to improve. Unlike the past. I for one do not want to see another unbalanced team, that has a high powered offense, and a defense that couldn’t stop grandma and her walker. I believe in time this team is gona be something we all can be proud of, and I believe we will win a super bowl, and be contenders regularly.
Me too...
everyone thinks about the Patriots who lost in the super bowl who depended on their offense. Their defense wasn’t too shabby, but the emphasis was on the O and they lost. I hope get a team that won with those great defenses and a balanced offensive attack.

Thomas
We need to find another Thomas, not that they make many like him, but we need one.
Why do some get so upset about this staff signing players that have links to them?
At this point in the season why not sign player you have seen before or has been seen by peers that you respect? This team’s season is on the edge of a cliff and all we can hope at this point is that this staff patches some holes and makes this squad at least respectable.
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
