The Kansas City Chiefs Lose the Governor's Cup to the St. Louis Rams
Pretty bland game tonight between the Chiefs and Rams. The Chiefs lost 17 to 9. Full stats are here.
It had a few ups and a few more downs than usual. Here are a few post game thoughts. Of course, we'll have much more tomorrow.
This was the first game that Chiefs head coach Todd Haley called the offensive plays. And over half of you gave him a B grade for his first half play calling.
This isn't mean to be a comprehensive post. Fill in the gaps in the comment section.
The Good
- The Chiefs racked up over 150 yards rushing on the ground on the strength of a 70-yard run by Dantrell Savage and a 41-yard run by Larry Johnson.
- The defense only gave up X points themselves and played pretty consistently the entire game.
- Quinten Lawrence had a 44-yard punt return.
- Wallace Gilberry, Tamba Hali and Corey Mays all had sacks.
- DaJuan Morgan had an athletic, diving interception in the flat.
- LB Jovan Belcher may make this team because of his special teams play.
The Bad
- WR Quinten Lawrence fumbled the ball away after a short catch. Todd Haley had words for him as he reached the sideline.
- Needing to make his mark on special teams to make the roster, WR Taurus Johnson was called for roughing the kicker.
- Brodie Croyle wasn't really bad but he wasn't good either. I know the o-line sucks but Croyle wasn't on his A game tonight.
- Matt Guiterrez's 4th and 8 pass at the end of the game was a weak decision.
The Ugly
- Tyler Thigpen came in and was 2/7 with two INTs.
- Three total turnovers. Is this something we need to be concerned about?
- Third down conversions: Chiefs were 3/16 (18%) and the Rams were 9/20 (45%).
- The Rams and St. Louis in general.
Let us know your thoughts on the game in this post-game thread. Be sane, please. The one thing I'll add is that I'm glad to be able to put this unanalyzable preseason behind and start the regular season. We're so close...

Missed the whole game, have it recorded
First glace, 150 yards rushing but 111 game on 2 rushes? Makes the other 39 yards look pathetic.

Was 176 yards.

johnson got called for roughing the kicker
not the passer
Before you build yourself up, you must tear somebody else down.
Would be cool if it were the passer though

When they adopt the roughing the passer rule
we might be just fine.
All losses in the 2009 season will be Herm and Carls fault.

wasn't it 17-9?
the pick 6 wasn’t the D’s fault

that was meant to be sarcastic
i swear i know math
And Haleys play calling should be in the "Good" section.
420 yards with QBs that werent executing and only about 60% of a real offensive line.

thigpens pick where he was falling down!..and him staring down his reciever!! HOLY SANTA CLAUSE SHIT!!! ARE U FUCKIN KIDDIN ME!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not really
even without that td we still lost. not his fault.

But when you throw falling down like that and stare down a reciever like he is the only guy on the field. THAT IS Thiggy’s fault. Who knows what the rest of the game may have held. Possibly another fumble for the Chiefs? These penalties and turnovers are killing us. Let’s face it. We……beat…….ourselves!

pretty much his fault (not that pre-season W-L mean much) but without that int for a td
Chiefs were in FG range at the end of the game, that INT for a td lost it
2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB
5. Todd Haley won't make a poster and jump around holding it up welcoming the Chiefs players to summer camp, I mean TRAINING camp
Both Picks
Yes, they only scored a TD on one of his picks but we were on our 23 when he threw his other one. That is a 10 point swing even if he throws it away… Didnt the game end 17-9? So it would have been 10-12… Just making a point that anytime you throw picks inside your FG range you lose points…
Brodie was inside the 20 three times.
Convert two of those and we win.

Honestly, we are terrible.
It’d be one thing if the Rams legitimately shut us down, but they didn’t. They gave up huge plays to us. We beat ourselves tonight, just as we did last week. I would not be surprised if we went 2-14 again this year. That was embarrassing.

If we don't have a new RT by the Ravens game
I think I’m going to spend most of the season rolled up in a fetal position.
so will our quarterbacks

It’s a serious need we need to take care of asap and I think the coaching staff knows it.

Levi Jones
I dont see any way we dont bring in Levi Jones to see what he can do at RT… How the hell can it hurt? How many times did our RT’s just plain miss the defender!!! WTF! I saw all 3 “possible” starters miss at least once if not twice!
We looked a lot better than the Rams in the 1st half
when our starters were in. I mean, if we had kept LJ in, we would have put up better numbers (I need something to help me sleep at night…). But yeah, LJ really did look AWESOME.
Their RT is the #2 pick in the draft.
Not sure they wanna part with him yet.

I think you're all overreacting.
The defense played well. We appear to have solid reserves in Gilberry, whoever is the backup NT, and at LB, especially if ZT gets healthy. Hali has really come on at OLB. Our secondary is very deep – and improving. The 1st team offense with Cassel showed signs and our running game is solid. This will be a running team with an attacking defense. As long as we don’t suffer any major injuries, don’t get into any shootouts, and take care of the ball, we’ll go .500 against a very tough schedule. This team, especially the defense, is taking on the identity of the head coach, and that’s a great start. Very Steeler-like.

Yeah, I am reserving judgment
Until I have seen more of the actual first offense together. Between Bowe being demoted, Cassel getting injured, and the limited playtime for LJ, I don’t feel I can accurately assess it yet.
Plus, we have yet to see anything of Cassel with Haley calling the plays.
Rectal Froth
agree...rec
I have been saying repeatedly we will be a boring offense to watch…running and short passing, ball control offense. If Lawrence and Lelie both make the team we may end up being able to stretch the field, but that won’t be the focus. The line has problems, but it’s not finished yet and it will gel once we figure out who the starters are. I think we’ll be ok. Even with what I see that worries me, I think I’ll stick with my predictions for the year.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
I actually see Haley being more aggressive than that now.
a couple weeks ago, I would have agreed with you but, Haley doesn’t seem to mess around with the play calling. Much more aggressive.

tyler thigpen sucks, penalties were committed, and quinten lawrence fumbled which caused a big turnover…oh and also tripped over his own feet.

I think our defense
hasn’t really showed what it’s capable of. I’m most upbeat about what Vrabel brings to the D, and I think they are going to quickly develop the identity that Croyle noted the team was missing. I’m very hopeful that we can have a solid defense as long as they don’t have to spend 45 minutes a game on the field.
Lelie 1 catch for 43 yards.
Run after catch or deep pass?

Deep isn't the right word
I would say short pass from Thigpen, or it would have been a TD. He totally underthrew him, and Lelie had to stop. He had his defender beat too…
Broken play where Thigpen just heeved it up and he came back to the ball.

Add Morgan, Tank, Turk (holy shit he lost a person in weight BTW), DJ, LJ, Savage, Battle, Ryan (he had 2 huge catches and one holding that brought back a TD… maybe he’s even), Bradley had a good catch and a GREAT block too… oh yeah, and Succop.
The TE catches tonight were Gonzalezesque.

by GenericBrand on Sep 3, 2009 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions
Succop was a definite plus
After a rough week last week he came back without a problem
The worst part is that the long FG
wouldn’t have mattered had he not shanked the short one. The last one was really close, and I couldn’t hate him for not making it. The 28 yarder was bad though. WHat happened on that play?
I hope to hell
that Croyle and Thigpen looked so bad because they haven’t had enough time with the 1st team offense.
They have to split reps
That makes a big differene but Cassel cant come back soon enough.

Honestly, it's timing and execution
see my new fanpost… but what I saw in the first 4 series was that the pass protection was actually OK… not fantastic, but OK.
Run blocking was good overall
QB timing was off, late getting the ball out, or missed the WR completely
If they are able to execute, the whole offense works better

I don't know about you guys but I am fairly optimistic
Now keep in mind that I say this from the perspective of a team that has won six games in the past two years. But, generally our 1st stringers played pretty well this preseason and I noticed a real improvement over the four games. I’m quite sure had this been a regular season game we would had won.
Our defense likes much improved and I think by the end of the year we may have a top 10 defense (that is if we go by the last six games ofthe season we would have top ten stats)

The defense and special teams are both improved.. if they can fix or mask the O-linem we’ll be ok. Playcalling was stronger tonight, it was the execution that was weak.
Punt Returning was awful. They need a true return guy.

Tank did work!
9 T’s. 1st team looks good. Scrubs are bad and lost the game. 1st team O ran like hell and if Cassel was in we may have put up 3 TD’s.
Sackoff must go. (McIntosh, Goff). 1st team D was insane. Blew em up. We need some tweaks here and there and we have a winner this season.
A fan since '90. I cried when Lowery missed the FG :( I was 11.
WOW!
I am not a rabid fan. I have coached professionally in an Olympic sport with good success for 36 years. I have a good coaches eye. Tonight I saw a lot of testing and a lot of allowing men to play themselves out of their sport. Some men refused to let themselves be put on a bubble, many (O-Line guys) seemed to want to live there. Once the O-Line is set and they live and work and play together for some time (years like our old lines?) we will be in the game. Until then, mad scramble, duck and cover, and pick 6 mimght be our strongest plays. The defense is ready to go over all.
Glad to see
A coach’s eyes saw about what mine did. We still have work to do but I feel a lot better than I did the last two years after preseason got over.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
it would have helped croyle if
He had a line that could give him time to throw. There were times when he had the time, but it wasn’t consistent enough to where he didn’t feel like he had to rush the throw. If you get hit throwing the ball 9 time out of 10 then that one time you have the time to throw a good ball you r gonna rush it. That and I think croyle is still shaking off the rust since he hasn’t played much since last year. Oh and for as much as he was hit tonight I am happy to see he didn’t get hurt!

I agree here
Thiggy on the other hand……….it’s like he has not learned the skill of looking off of receivers, and holds onto the ball far too long. A problem for him for some time. A couple plays “over-developed” due to his indecision or timidity in getting the ball out.

I'm lovin me some Corey Mays!
That dude is insane. He is always around the ball and he doesn’t know quit. Croyle led his usual field goal drives. Thigpen sucked big ones. Gut shows promise, but I think he needs more seasoning. It looks like Dantrell Savage played his way onto the team tonight with Jackie Battle probably getting cut. He missed a couple of blocks and looked unimpressive overall. I’m not all that encouraged after the preseason. Hopefully some O-Line cuts will work their way onto this team. Lord knows we need them. Oh, and goodbye Taurus Johnson. Nice knowing you.
Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.
I think
we found our identity. Tough running team/defense. Set up the pass with running. We’re going to be gnarly.

5 safeties isn't a stretch
when one of them is a special teams captain (McGraw). I say release Brown, keep Pollard, Page, Morgan, and Quick Draw McGraw (H/T Paddy)

No way. Brown is exactly what Pollard & Page need.
The two young bucks had their positions handed to them when they came into the league and had it easy under Herm. They need someone to show them how to play smart football and be disciplined. Brown sticks. We carry 5 safeties and only 4 corners.
Mike Brown's 'leadership' is oversold
Page & Pollard are better than Brown is at this point in his career. Pollard is already establishing himself as a leader on defense and he doesnt need any player-coaches like some of our linebackers do with Mike Vrabel. I say cut him loose
