Kansas City Chiefs Sign Two, Release Three
There's been a lot of movement in the last hour so scan the front page to get caught up but here we go...
The Kansas City Chiefs officially announced the arrival of former Arizona Cardinals tight end Leonard Pope. They also announced that the team has added T Chris Patrick to the practice squad.
Here is our story on the Pope signing.
Patrick was signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He's had stints with the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chiefs also announced that the club has released LB Monty Beisel and CB Ricardo Colclough.
Beisel is a bit of a surprise considering the team brought him on this offseason. He was behind Demorrio Williams and Derrick Johnson on the depth chart.
The Chiefs have tried Ricardo Colclough out as a punt returner at times but he hasn't seen much game action in that capacity. The team has worked out multiple defensive backs in recent weeks so the writing may have been on the wall for Colclough.
We're not done yet: The team also announced that Tom Crabtree has been released from the practice squad.
Make the jump to walk through all of today's roster moves with me and see how many roster spots we have open.
Subtractions
- Tyler Thigpen
- Monty Beisel
- Ricardo Colclough
- Tom Crabtree (PS)
Additions
- Leonard Pope
- Chris Patrick (PS)
By my count that leaves two spots open on the 53 man roster. Folks, we've still got some moves to be made!

WOOHOO
the only guy out on the market that I thought could help the team was pope…we shall see. I will try not to get my hopes too high as I have been known too in the past.
To bad about Beisel :(
Beisel
his special teams error last week couldn’t have helped his stock.
and, if he was part of all of the missed coverage by ILB on defense… well… there’s your reasons
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
Colquitt had a beautiful punt that hit about the 8 and bounced, and bounced, and bounced.
And while this was happening, Beisel was standing about 1-2 feet from the ball (He could have just stuck out his arm and grabbed the ball) and just let the ball roll into the endzone. Like it litterally he just watched the ball bounce and bounce and bounce andTweeeet…touchback. It was pathetic.

Stupid but. . .
This was a horrible play as there were 3 Chiefs that could have grabbed the ball before it rolled in. However the thing with Beisel is that he couldn’t grab the ball because he didn’t pay attention to how far he had run and he himself went into the endzone. Once a player does that they can’t touch the ball that’s why he could only watch. Yes stupid for not knowing where he was at on the field but even more so for the other guys who got greedy and tried to let it bounce the extra 2 yards.

Players do make mistakes
He’s amazing at ST 99% of the time (kind of like McGraw), but he really effed up once. It’s not like this is the norm. Anyways, we already have our ST guru, so who needs another one? Granted, our LB core could use any help it can get…
Beisel's error made me
Puke. Seriously, I was yelling at the TV for the rest of the game. That’s inexcusable. You can’t be a pro and do that.
I’m glad thigg is gone. Seriously, time to get some real expectations.

POPE IS TERRIBLE
He is the most athletically gifted TERRIBLE player on the Cardinals. He had one promising season, and otherwise he is utterly atrocious. He’s a terrible blocker with terrible hands. TERRIBLLLEEEEEEE
I wonder how much that terrible play on special teams
That Beisel made in Oakland has to do with this? I know it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Well when you are on the team as a Special Teams specialist
And you screw up as big as he did on that play, it doesn’t boad well for you.
After that play...
…he couldnt make Blue Springs South as a Special Teamer…
Happy to admit I was wrong they wouldnt cut him…Even if it was a week later..

My count is correct, right?
From the 53 man roster we lost: Thigpen, Beisel and Colclough.
From the 53 man roster we added: Pope
Two practice squad moves cancel each other out.

Winning begins with Attitude - 2009 Chiefs 12-4
With a 3-4 scheme and the need for backers...
This makes us a little short in depth doesnt it? I think Beisel becomes expendable because of Belcher but we still need numbers at LB.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
Good math...
So here comes lineman and move long up from practice
I think Long eats up one spot.
But you dont make extra spots open unless you plan to fill them.

I think him signing is a given
So if we add long to the roster and lets say we sign Tauscher (sp?) then that gives us 53. We arent expected to keep 4 te so maybe Miller (who worked out last week) takes Oconnels spot, and Oconnel goes to ps to take longs spot?
Maybe he could shuffle
Away from the opposing team. We could call him Dr. Zoidberg if he does that! Hell I’m going to call him Dr. Zoidberg anyways…
Don’t judge me!
Check out my blog on software development:
http://www.turnleafdesign.com/
But the new math equates...
we aren’t done yet
yeah even with long promoted we pick up 2 new players on top of all the above
I would think on of those DB’s we had in possibly…I also think Long swaps spots with Oconnell…

That is something
that the previous regime refused to do. Good to see that they arent as “content” as the last guys
iF THEY DONT WIN THIS WEEK......
They wont be as good as the last guys. 0-4
LAST YEAR
they didn’t open the season with road games at Baltimore & Philly, and with a home game against the Giants.
Exactly
I think this year’s schedule is much stranger than last, considering the strength of our opponent. I don’t expect wins in some cases, but I do expect competition. As long as the team improves and builds on this early part of the season, we have a chance in the latter.
Lets see if we can make this simple
Thiggy = Pope
Colcoloughologh = someone (possibly miller)
Beisel = Lineman (possibly Tauscher)
Anybody have a problem with that? Seems like a decent upgrade to me.
I think he was active for too many games last year
not sure though

I don't think he would make it to our PS
Just for the fact he is 6-8 and the 5th TE taken in the draft, teams will take a look at him

do you remember the raiders game
where he stood there on the 2 yard line and watchd the ball roll slow motion into the endzone on a punt? that probably dropped his stock
Who has Pioli brought in

Linemen
Screw bringing up Long. Let’s go after two offensive linemen. Say Runyan and Tauscher. Stopgaps? Maybe, but we need serious help along the line and another WR will do nothing for that. And since Pope can’t block, that doesn’t help either. However, he’s definitely an upgrade so no beef with that pickup.
Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce
Im rooting for long...
but i would not complain if we got two lineman. Def Tauscher, but Id rather have someone other than Runyan. Maybe Levi Jones?
Levi Jones was a LT i thought?
And considering how shitty mcntosh was at switching…he might be too. Plus, Long will help the WR core with the short passes. I just hope we keep Engram.

Am I alone in sensing that we're on the verge of another big trade?
Very odd to release two guys without announcing their replacements right away. Why would they delay?
I don’t know who is even on the block that we could acquire that would be impactful. Boldin is a wet dream, but it’s not happening.
Why would they delay?
Because they’re working out contracts right now, maybe? They just made a lot of moves so I expect the announcement to come tomorrow AM.

and I’d rather have Cassel. You can tell Brady isn’t the same and one more injury will end his career. Besides, we don’t want a media circus chasing him down every game. And more importantly, that would never happen and we all know it.

No. We're trading for Belicheck.

What a waste of a pick. They were going to fire him anyway.
absolutely, totally agree
That pissed me off so bad. I always thought Herm sucked for the Jets and then when they did that it simply became unforgiveable for me.
Air Cassel - approved for takeoff
But he gave up one for the two OL from Miami, right?
Seems like a wash, Thigpen for 2 OL?
I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...
Thigpen should have been traded right after they decided on Croyle
Why risk his stock going lower? That was a gamble that didn’t pay off, even if we did eventually get a pick for him.

No way
There wasn’t a “market” for him. The articles stated that Miami was looking for a guy who’s taken NFL snaps, a guy with experience. They were also looking for someone who might bring different things to the table than pocket Henne. This was wonderful timing!

We could just promote Long and Richardson from the practice squad. Although I’m not sure why they wouldn’t of announced that right away.
The Good: Moved the ball some, stopped the run
The Bad: penalties and not getting a FG before halftime
The Ugly: losing to J. Russel who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from five yards away
exactly
I think they have every intention of bring in Tauscher… and they may have had this as part of the master plan all along.

Green Bay has had big line problems thus far and if they haven’t brought him back it may mean that he just physically is not ready to go.

And see no evidence that GB even worked him out and a guy returning to his team even for a workout wouldve caught a headline somewhere. Without a workout I would have a hard time believing that GB has a reason to not bring him back because of his health.

Pope
I like the signing of Pope although all I really know about him is stats. The guy is a pretty big TE. How is he as a blocker? With his size it seems like that should be a strong suit for him. If that is the case seems like he could help us in a couple places of need.
I wonder if they would bring Taucher in since O'Callaghan is the only RT we have...(besides Ndukwe)
Hmm…Albert, Waters, Niswanger, Goff/Ndukwe, Taucher/O’Callaghan
Doesn’t look THAT bad…but C and RG still need help. Goff can manage.
