Why the Chiefs didn't sign a playmaker
The Kansas City Chiefs went into pre-season without signing one of the few remaining free agent "playmakers". There are a few guys left on the street that could potentially make an impact for an NFL club. Marvin Harrison, Matt Jones and on defense, Derrick Brooks are still unsigned...just to name a few. The Chiefs stayed away and I finally realize why. Pioli and Haley wanted to go into this season with their own "guys" keeping the distractions away from the Chiefs. The mindset in Arrowhead is build this thing with "our" guys and create a team chemistry from 1 to 53. I think that now, even though the Chiefs are off to a bad start, that this is right way to do it. Haley needs to build a rapport with these guys, and when new players come in, there are NO distractions. Come in, get your work done, and be ready to play on Sunday.
The Chiefs in the long run, assuming that Pioli gets the right players, will be a much better team in December, and then in April when they likely pick in the top 10. The Chiefs will have 3 picks in the first two rounds, and will continue to bring guys in that have a team first attitude. I expect that the Chiefs will always stay away from the sexy picks, and the sexy free agents, because winning comes down to the guys who bring their lunch pail to work and aren't afraid of the work.
I commend Haley for staying with his personal direction for this team and I am hopeful that it pays off soon for him. The first Chiefs win this season will be a big thing for this team and hopefully they can gain a lot of confidence in Haley and the work they put in. Regardless of my continued support for Brodie Croyle, I want to see the Chiefs play well on both sides of the ball, and if that is Matt Cassel, I support him.

FA was garbage this year..
Every decent player was either franchised, resigned, or got a huge contract deal.
Marvin Harrison is old and at the end of his chain…
Derrick Brooks is a Cover 2 small LB that is, once more, old and at the end of his chain
Matt Jones is a blow sniffing crack fiend. Once forgiven twice forgotten. Not exactly the smart part of the entire ideal player mold. But then again most of this team doesn’t seem to comprehend that fact anyway.
Another one of these posts...
Name the playmaker we missed out on? I just would like one of these posts to have that info and they never do. Marvin Harrison isn’t a playmaker anymore. Brooks is old, a 4-3 LB and cant even catch on on a 4-3 team. Jones is a crackhead and an underachiever.
The truth is there were very little great “playmakers” available this offseason that didn’t sign for more money then they are worth paying or that didn’t have strong connections to the teams they ended up on. Considering all the teams with injury problems already the “playmakers” avaiable now are few and far between or they would already be signed. You have to get lucky this time of year like we did with Wade(has the potential to be good) or picking someone that overachieves.

good post
I agree that team chemistry will be an important factor in creating wins by the end of this year.
I agree that Pioli and Haley have a specific plan, that doesn’t include “sexy” picks.
I just hope that they get to taste success before everyone gives up on that plan.
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
I still wish we could have brought in Albert Haynesworth
even if he does take plays off he would have been a hell of a NT and Tank Tyler and Ron Edwards would have excelled in the backup role. Thats a very healthuy rotation of NT’s
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
Vernon Carey (RT) was another guy I would have loved to overpay
Or Jason Brown © with either of these guys Baltimore and Oakland are very winnable games
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
hahah that (c) is supposed to be ( c ) without the spaces
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
Brown would have been nice
but VERY expensive… wasn’t there a bit of a bidding war for him?
same with Haynesworth
I don’t think they ever had a shot at Haynesworth, who’s better in the 4-3, I think…. the Skins signed him immediately

Theres no center in the league worth that kind of money,

We had a great chance at a play making TE.
Haynesworth, Taylor, LB out of Baltimore.
We have the money to spend. Huge contracts shouldn’t be a problem.
I would of guffawed at Pioli if he had dropped...
Over 100 million on Albert Haynesworth…He’s already injured this season and Washington looks like it lost huge in that scenario.
Bart Scott would’ve taken a huge contract offer to come to KC and not follow Rex Ryan to NY
Taylor…I don’t know this player…are you talking about Jason Taylor?

Fred Taylor....
I thought the consensus was that the Chiefs were pretty good at the RB position…

Not that Fred Taylor would've come to KC over NE

Just guessing
that Fred Taylor was whom NJ Chiefs fan was referring to as one of the FA’s that were available! And I think you are correct & that he went to where he preferred to go.
Yeah...
the only player I would have sought out is a pass catching tight end, but I guess these guys don’t grow on trees.
TIght end would have been a big plus for this rebuilding system the Chiefs mandated.

yeah, but not a big part of Haley's offense
we had no shot at any of the big names out there, because of loyalty for one reason or another and big names were leaving (TG) no coming.
From the looks of things
Haley should seriously consider using the TE extensively from this point forward.
Braccae illae virides cum subucula rosea et tunica Caledonia-quam elenganter concinnatur!
Owen Daniels was available for a little
but he got franchised
