Chiefs Trade Tyler Thigpen to the Dolphins

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced they have traded QB Tyler Thigpen to the Miami Dolphins for an undisclosed draft choice.

Josh Looney KCChiefs.com first reported the move on the Chiefs live call-in show.

This makes the second trade Chiefs GM Scott Pioli has done with his father-in-law Bill Parcells.  The Chiefs acquired two offensive linemen (Andy Alleman and Ikechuku Ndukwe) from the Dolphins in preseason for an undisclosed draft choice.

Early speculation of a fifth rounder makes sense but that's complete speculation at this point.

The timing is right as well.  Chris Mortensen of ESPN recently reported that Dolphins QB Chad Pennington was out for the season with a shoulder injury.  The Dolphins have Chad Henne (starter) and Pat White (backup) on the roster.

This means that the Chiefs have an open roster spot possibly bringing credence to the speculation that Lance Long will be called up to the active roster.

Check out The Phinsider for what the Dolphins fans are saying about the trade.

Much more coming on this story that's just breaking....

Did we get our draft pick that we traded for Alleman and Ndukwe back? lol

5th rounder

That’s my guess, but possibly a 4th since the scrwed us on the Ndukwe deal, and because they are in need of a solid backup QB.

Watch now

as Tyler throws (and probably catches too) the winning TD at this years superbowl ala Lawrence Tynes a few years back.

Waiting until August!

by sir eccles on Sep 29, 2009 1:06 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah

I really miss Tynes missing 20-30 yard field goals and making a 50+ yarder. Even the game where he played the hero against Green Bay for the Giants, he missed 2 field goals of 36 and 46 yards in the 4th quarter that would have iced the game before overtime.

by JayrodT on Sep 29, 2009 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Tynes

Tynes was always a horrible kicker for us. How many 30 yard fg has he missed? I’ve even seen him miss an extra point. Kicking a 32 yard FG to win the game hardly means we should have kept him on the roster. I would rather have John Carney out there kicking any day.

by groundedchevy on Sep 29, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Now we have a roster spot open.

Do we add some one or maybe Long gets called up?
Best of luck to Thiggy. Hopefully its conditional, and if Thiggy plays well maybe we get a higher pick.

Has any more

Good question

I haven’t heard a word. I gotta think they’re healed or Miami wouldn’t have made the deal. If he’s not, they might wash him out during the physical.

I’m not saying Thifs will develop into that kind of player, but some dang good QBs took a long time to mature into the role (Gannon, Green, Garcia, etc). I wish him luck and hope he turns into one heck of a player.

by PSUkegreen on Sep 29, 2009 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Does anyone know if they have been listing White as the emergency QB?

or have they had him fully active? I haven’t watched much on Miami this year.

One big reason why this might be a great deal for KC is that Tyler has seemed to struggle with learning the offense. Don’t forget that he looked awful until Gailey switched the offense once it became clear he was stuck with Thigpen for the duration. He didn’t seem to do well picking up Gailey’s base offense, and struggled with Haley’s. We’ll see how he does in Miami.

by Big Chief on Sep 29, 2009 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions

White has been listed as the backup

So that they can use him in the Wildcat, while Henne was listed as the emergency QB.

90% sure that it's a conditional pick.

It’s rare that a QB is traded to a team with an injury at that position and there isn’t some scenario where they’re going to get a better pick if the QB starts and plays well the rest of the season for them.

by Ryan in Nixa on Sep 29, 2009 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions

They haven't impressed me thus far in the season.

Sure they’re better than McIntosh but who isn’t. They’re solid backups so I guess we traded a solid backup for two solid backups. Good I guess, but personally I felt Thigpen’s trade value was really high at the end of last season. I felt by Pioli holding onto him and exposing his weaknesses in preseason that trade value diminished.

I’ll hold final judgment till I see what we get.

I don't want no Yo-Yos

I'm Sure Any Team Worth Their Salt

Had plenty of scouting on Thigpen if they had a true interest and already knew his “weaknesses”. Meaning the pre-season didn’t help but don’t act like all the execs had the wool pulled over their eyes until a couple lousy pre-season games.

by Ryan in Nixa on Sep 29, 2009 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

well when you bring in Haley and Cassel its clear theres not much room for Thigpen

Most teams knew at that point he was on his way out and would be gotten for much cheaper. Sure it would have been hard to deal Thigpen that fast, I’m just saying I wish we had traded him when his market value was at its peak

I don't want no Yo-Yos

by AK_47 on Sep 29, 2009 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure how you jump to this conclusion...

just because both deals involve the word conditional? Do you know the conditions of both deals or what the max pick is for either? The Olineman deal could be a conditional 7th based on roster status at year end for all we know and the Thigpen deal could be a conditional pick for anything from a 3rd to a 7th depending on how its set up. You can’t jump to the conclusion though that this is Thigpen for Ndukwe/Alleman.

regardless of the pick, this was a good move

think about it this way… Thigpen was MN’s 7th round pick, the Chiefs stole him off of waivers when they tried to put him on the PS, ended up getting almost a full year of him starting at QB, and traded him for a draft pick.

So, low cost, plenty of benefit to the career of Thigpen as a Chief.

Good move.
