Chiefs Make Changes at Right Tackle, Nose Tackle

The Kansas City Chiefs have a new starter at right tackle: Ryan O'Callaghan.

Acquired off waivers on September 6th, O'Callaghan came from the New England Patriots, formerly the home of GM Scott Pioli.  O'Callaghan's rise to starter is no surprise - I think that was the plan eventually.  But what did surprise me is how quickly it came.  Previous starter Ikechuku Ndukwe, acquired prior to the start of the season as well, has been relegated to second team duty.

There's also a new starter at nose tackle: Ron Edwards

Tank Tyler has been the No. 1 nose tackle since the beginning of the season and started the first two games.  Edwards got the starting nod against the Eagles on Sunday.

Other changes include:

Jake O'Connell moves ahead of Brad Cottam as the No. 2 tight end

Jamaal Charles moves ahead of Dantrell Savage as the No. 2 running back

I thought Tank was doing a good job

but I am wondering if he was doing what the scheme calls for an NT to accomplish or is it because of the pass rush capabilities?

NT is a rotation

I don’t put too much stock in who’s on top of the depth chart.

Both guys play plenty of snaps.

i think both of these guys are doing fine

I think the D line is the least of our problems….the real problems at D are at LB and Safety.

I am happy to see the change at RT though…can we get a change at RG too?

Yeah. I think they are even, but i always

like when Tank started. But i just hope Ocallaghan will be a better started than ndukwe. Safety im not really worried about yet.

RG

If Ryan O’Callaghan shows that he can handle the job at RT(big if with our luck) then I really think you will see Ikechuku Ndukwe moving to RG. That is where he played last year for Miami and from what I was able to see he did a prety good job.

Ndukwe sucks....glad to see him go...

But I doubt Ryan O’Callaghan will be much of an upgrade….I hope I’m wrong.

Say it aint so Tank….I though he’s been pretty decent. I didn’t really see too much from him against the Eagles…but then again I didn’t see much of anyone against the Eagles.

Bone for Edwards and Tank will probably be the starter vs Dallas.
Maybe Nduckwe would be moved to Guard if we had another tackle in the rotation.
Tommorrow is Tuesday maybe Langston Walker or someone will be wandering aimlessly around Arrowhead and get picked up. Maybe I need to go down there and just hang around for awhile :)

I have two buddies in Dental School who....

are huge eagle fans…they were asking about our TE situation since TG was gone. They both immediately were impressed with Cottam upon his entry into the game for 1 play, and were glad that was all they saw of him, instead we play a washed up former Dallas Cowboy.

Also, it should be ONLY Charles/Savage in the first half (quicker/shiftier and can make people miss), then (if we could ever get a lead) LJ shoud touch the ball about 18-22 times starting in the second half when the D is worn down a little

by Tomahawk_Chop on Sep 28, 2009 5:19 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

i find it hard to believe

charles/savage will have any more of a chance with the line we have unless we change up the running plays a bit

by KCCheeze on Sep 28, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I am pretty sure Charles displayed his ability to make someone miss late in the game (of course it was negated by a penalty), but the point is a little bit “shiftier” back is the difference between 2 and 9 or 10 and 2 and 6…this could make a HUGE difference, but I also agree our line sucks and play calling is suspect…Maybe if we threw down field (or just tried to throw down field), it would open up the run game some

by Tomahawk_Chop on Sep 28, 2009 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

But LJ is more power and wears them down quicker...

whether or not its LJ or Charles…both will get hit behind the line of scrimmage because of our OL. :(

by Wrestler189s on Sep 28, 2009 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Playing a half of football wears them down...

not the size of the running back they are tackling in the backfield…but maybe Charles/Savage can escape some of those tackles and turn it into a positive gain.

by Tomahawk_Chop on Sep 28, 2009 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions

It could be said either way,

LJ could go for the 1st half and then the 2nd Charles/ Savage could excape because the first half wore them down…or the 1st half of Charles/ Savage’s speed wore them down and then LJ just would get to the second level in the 2nd half…

Like the draft. Washington is nice we didn’t need to draft a corner though. Magee or Jackson and an O-Lineman would of been nice. We should of Drafted atleast 3 O-Lineman that was the first mistake. giving up or second for cassel was the biggest.

I was iffy about Jackson but since not alot of 3-4 DE come along (like somebody posted)

Tank is playing great 4-3 DT.

But Edwards can do more just absorbing blockers and getting unglamorous push. I can see Tank coming off the bench and causing problems on offense because he’s more of a penetrator on passing downs. But against the run, Tank gets negative push.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

How Many every play backs are in the League

Look around there is honestly one and he doesn’t play every down. That would be AP. My comment there are so many good players on both sides of the ball depth is the best. Fresh legs are always better.

Running styles.

Fresh legs aren’t ALWAYS better. You could have the freshest legs in the game but if your style of running is what the D is used to then you will not produce. If you have a style of running that the D is scratching their heads trying to figure out…then you will produce.

Not sure what you're watching.

When Charles tries to make holes, he stops right behind his linemen, sees that there isn’t a hole, and shifts it to the outside and picks up 4 yards … but when LJ does it, he runs into the back of his lineman and falls down and loses 2 or 3 yards.

by JacinB on Sep 28, 2009 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed LJ is done.

Charles and Savage are both better and they are trully duel threats witch keeps the D from just exploding towards the line of scimmage witch I’ve seen on every play when LJ is on the field, but what do we do anyways, hand the ball to LJ with no where to go.

by kcchiefstd on Sep 28, 2009 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions

They have different styles, if you look at it as black and white then they dont....

But really Charles is a more powerful back, but they could be a better duel threat then LJ and Charles, Face it man he isnt the same guy. the year he was injured he did fine behind a suspect line. When he came back, he couldnt do anything. You can tell he has lost Power more then anything. I havent seen him bruise anyone in a while. Your just attached man get over it.

The O-line sucks – pure and simple. My pick is to change the C. All of the years KC’s o-line was good we had short stout C with intelligence (Tim Grunhard, Casey Weigmann)

Freaking Iswanger is tall and lengthy. Playing Center, you must have great low center of gravity – great leverage as you snap and back up to pass protect. Niswanger is slow in getting off after the snap, gets push off easily due to his height and lack of leverage when charged by opposing NT.

The way I see it, we have no one in the o-line unit that could make any difference in 2008 and again in 2009 because Pioli didn’t make any upgrade (NDukwe and Callaghan and Alleman) aren’t upgrade to McIntosh and B Richardson or Goff.

Chan Gailey put together that Thigpen offense for a reason – to make our o-line look mediocre. But when you want a conventional drop back passing QB – our O-line look horrific.

Predictions as of 06.24.2009.

Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

Guess Tank Wasn't What They Were Looking For

Hopefully O’Callaghan will be a better player at RT than Ndukwe. I don’t think he could really be much worse.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

I don't know much about O' Callaghan..

Is he a starter? Could he be better than Ndukwe?

by Wrestler189s on Sep 28, 2009 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

could be...

was said to be solid in NE… “experts” said he might be able to start for someone at RT

we’ll see.

Tank isn’t done by any means, UC… looks like the starting jobs are all revolving doors.

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

by stagdsp on Sep 28, 2009 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Sounds good to me.

Start him, Lol. And Tank will stay. All the jobs are open…except for TE. All i see is Ryan out there.

He Might

He’s got ability and he was a starter for at least part of his career for the Patriots. So there’s potential there. But I don’t think the guy’s an All-Pro. I hope he’s that good, but that’s very unlikely…Belichick seems to know when to give up on players.

Did anybody see

After LJ fumbled the ball yesterday, the camera was on him and it looked like he was crying? Anybody else notice that or was it just me?

by Wrestler189s on Sep 28, 2009 6:35 PM CDT reply actions

you gotta give it to the guy

he has been working really hard and has changed his attitude. I think he may be trying too hard to run behind a line that is just not helping him. He is trying so hard to impress haley and gain back the chiefs fans he lost. It probably hurts him pretty bad to not be able to gain yards no matter what he does.

He did come back after the fumble and looked like he was running with a chip on his shoulder like the LJ of old…too late unfortunately

by KCCheeze on Sep 28, 2009 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

this is evident by his twitter comments

“I react to failure jus like you do. So when u feel how u feel. I feel double”

by KCCheeze on Sep 28, 2009 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I was like is LJ crying?

He deserves to have a 1500 yard season. But when Haley doesn’t focus on the OL it doesnt help him out any. He will have a breakout game and he will make an impact…its just a matter of which game the line decides to act like a professional football line.

Edwards provides a better pass rush than Tank

Too often did I see Thank standing straight up, flat-footed, playing patty-cake with the interior linemen of the Eagles on Sunday. Edwards is more likely to penetrate and cause problems in the pocket. Tank will rotate in plenty, don’t worry.

Starting O’Callaghan is the right move. Get him some more experience with the Chiefs and the offense – next year, he and Colin Brown will man the right side.

Lastly, Brad Cottam might be the next 2008 draft bust. It’s a shame as he could be a weapon. It must be a mental/discipline/toughness thing. He has all of the physical tools.

by HTrayne on Sep 28, 2009 7:56 PM CDT reply actions

Colin Brown has alot of potential is what i think he might be saying.

But Cottam is no bust at all. He is a good blocking TE and Ryan just has a little bit more speed i think. But Cottam is no bust, whatso ever.

Potential

So what? Potential means nothing when you’re sitting on IR and you’ve yet to play even one game for the team.

Barry Richardson Had "Potential"

So did Jeff Webb. And Samie Parker. And any number of guys who never did much of anything in their career but suck. I’ll say that Colin Brown has potential when he actually suits up for a game and does anything that looks remotely impressive.

despite missing the quarterback

he was definitely in the backfield with Flaaco 2-3 times

javarris williams

Don’t forget about him next year. He is a good back and I am sure he will get a chance next year since he is a draft choice. I liked watching him in training camp, looked good and he is solid.

Lets face it

this is no surprise….we were starting a RG at RT.

Expect some degree of improvement (if only marginal) because the kid gets to play his natural position. Plus I think most poeple wouldnt mind eventually seeing

Albert Shields Alleman Ike O’Calleghan

Not a stellar line up, but one with some young potential that I think is probably our best available lineup. Opinions?

by Bashman on Sep 29, 2009 12:50 AM CDT reply actions

I knew it

Not to be a negative nancy, but I said all along that the trade we made for those two rejects from Miami was a bad move. I know that we as fans tend to get a little spark whenever such a trade is made, but we need to realize that when we trade for someone eles’s backup, the odds of them being better than our starter is slim. Those guys that came in are NO better than McIntosh (speaking of Ndukwe and whoever the other guy is)

by gochiefsgo on Sep 29, 2009 2:05 AM CDT reply actions

+1

Absolutely. I’m with you.

I know that we as fans tend to get a little spark whenever such a trade is made

That’s been the case this entire off season – just like when we signed Toomer, I hated it but everyone claimed a veteran like him was better than Bradley & co.

Ive been known to get overly excited about a player that didnt deserve it as well...

but you find yourself in a situation where the team isnt giving you anything good to talk about so you find hope in the unknown: the new player. :)
