Wildcat? Tyler Thigpen? Am I the only one who thinks this?
Ok, I don't claim to be the biggest football genius, but I am tired of losing. The impression I have had of the Chiefs offense the last few seasons can be summed up in one word...predictable. LJ is in and we run. He is out, we pass. The defenses do not seem to have a real challenge in defending our formations.
Maybe I am stupid, but dang, we have Tyler, Charles, Savage and LJ. Couldn't we mix in a bit of wildcat and throw the other teams off a bit? I can hear the first objection by the Chiefs, "we are still working to get our starters to learn our primary offense, let alone mix in a second set of plays."
That is great and all, but the defenses are handling our primary offense with ease. The exception was Oakland, but they are not exactly leading the league in defense at the moment.
I just imagine Tyler sitting on the bench rotting and getting dusty and I think if they mixed him in along with the running backs between plays with Cassel it would utilize Tyler, keep Cassel fresh and keep the defense off guard.
Is that crazy or does it make any sense to anyone else?

I wondered the same thing today
Would have been more entertaining than LJ up the middle, LJ up the middle, Charles for 8, punt!

Wasn't that attempted last year?

That would require Haley to think outside the box
rumor has it that he’s a bit overwhelmed these days

Oh shit, wait a second
Gailey is no loger with the team right? Nevermind. It wouldn’t work anyway.

how many games where won with the spread last year.
i believe that was a 1. The wildcat is a form of the spread option football. so this team doesn’t enough speed or players to catch the ball and make the plays.

not to get nitpicky
but the wildcat is really just an old single wing formation with an unbalanced line… pop warner invented it a long time ago… although it was a precusor to that type of offense because of the large line splits…

Pop Warner made it so we should try it in the NFL?
Am I reading this correctly?

At this point it's not even about the spread or wildcat or whatever
It’s about taking what little talent we have and using effectively enough to stay competitive on game day. We’re not making effective adjustments to move the ball and score.

Let's REALLY think outside the box....
Let’s trade for vince young… or pat white… we know parcells will deal with us…. or hell both of them…
And for the rest of the year we transition completely to a spread option/veer option out of the flexbone…. We’d have three QB’s capable of running the system because lord knows you’d need more than one with all the abuse they’d take… we’ve got two guys in savage a charles that would be good pitch/slot backs… we have a couple of big recivers in bowe and bradley… hell in the flexbone, we could even throw cottam and ryan out there on the edge to block…. LJ would be the dive back…. battle has proven himself capable…. we let him be the slotback with mlb responsibilities. A veer offense helps to hide offensive line issues because you usually leave a DE unblocked and are able to get double teams at the point of attack, and blocks are rarely head on, you’re able to get good blocking angles…. add in the ability to throw the ball out of an urban meyer esque spread every once in awhile, and we’ve got ourselves something… besides there you have a better chance of beating a better opponnent if you limit the number of possesions they have.. ie eating the clock up with possesions, how many times have we seen navy hold the football for an entire quarter????
I’m only half joking about this….

How about a f-ing screen game?
I mean jesus you would think we might be able to a least pull this one off. If we could just execute a simple screen it would neutralize the pass rush and could even create some big plays. I say get LJ in space with some catches. Our offensive line is just as bad if not worse at run blocking than pass protection. However, I think Albert would excell at moving up the field since he so athletic. Waters too. Let’s give Quintin Lawerence some more touches. Some quick sideline passes with Bowe on the same side to block. Reverses. Maybe we could do some direct snaps, but we can get more innovative without throwing baby out with the bath water.

no i was thinking before the eagles game...
that all this hype was about the eagles and vick running the wildcat that it would’ve been awesome if it was the chiefs that ran the WC with thigster and totally dominated…but that didnt happen :(

thanks for the replies...thought maybe i was the only crazy...
person thinking about this. Yes, we have many issues on offense to work on. Yes, Thigpen and a spread wasn’t a perfect answer last year.
However, we did get that one win. Hrmm…that is one more than we have now. Also, it was an interesting offense to watch. I find myself going to sleep watching the Chiefs on offense this year. I really expected more from Haley because of his offensive background. The Chiefs are young in his eyes and have a lot to learn, obviously and I understand that. However, I think LJ still has some gas left in his tanks, but the defenses are always ready for his runs and our offensive line does not exactly open up huge gaps for him to attack. The one thing Thigpen brought to the offense last year was a surprise run from the backfield when we were looking like pass. I was just thinking that if we had Charles or Savage along with Thigpen and DJ in the backfield it would make the defense stutter step at least a bit and maybe we could run for some yards. I still want Cassel in there to throw and direct the offense, but mixing this in like Miami or Phili does might keep the defenses off guard.

OUT OF 16 GAMES!!!
We have played 3 GAMES so far this year.
Give it time before you judge.

not a Haley hater...
Really. I think Haley is a guy who believes in fundamentals and has gotten this team to tackle better, get in shape and play competitive football.
However, I think I also agree with Haley that we are not the most talented team in the league. That is not to say we do not have some talented guys on both sides of the ball, but there are other teams that have faster, stronger, quicker people than we have.
What I was suggesting was that we have a talented individual sitting on the bench that might help open up opportunities for our offense. I do not think it should be our primary offense as I believe that we should be able to run and pass the ball in our standard offense. But what I do think is that utilizing the talent we have on the team by tossing in a bit of Thigpen and some wildcat, might open up other opportunties for our running game and maybe bring us a few first downs we are currently missing. In addition, it would allow Thigpen to contribute to this offense and maybe open up some other run opportunties for LJ where he can be less predictable.

I would have to disagree with that statement.
Miami averaged 9 yards per carry against Indianapolis with the Wildcat and almost pulled off that upset. Also, Phili used it against us today and got positive yardage.

Almost only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades...
Needless to say other then Miami’s feel good season last year and early play off loss they’ve since gone 0-3 this season.
AZs floundering offense is a testament to the spread having seen its better days…
Philly ran against the Chiefs…but failed to put up points against a woeful Saints defense
The Patriots have since moved on from the spread after 2 abysmal games and returned to more base pro sets with under center sets…
Among others…running the spread as a base set without outstanding personnel nets a low success rate in the NFL. While the Pats unveiled it to great success in 07 even they have begun to move away from it and the Pats as a whole are a team head and shoulders above the Chiefs.

the answer is?
So then, we continue to do what we have so far this season? What suggestions do you have to offer some hope the Chiefs, Butch? How can we better utilize the existing talent that we currently have? (besides obviously causing less penalties)
by CalChiefsFan on Sep 28, 2009 2:10 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Tough question...
The spread offers the opportunity to mask the deficiency of the Chiefs game on offense yet hinder any growth into a pro style set (i.e. Branden Albert and Thigpen for example). While Albert benefited from the spread set blocking scheme and the 5 yard cushion and Thigpen put up respectable numbers in the Arrow spread (pistol spread whatever); yet the change back to the pro style has proven that they haven’t learned (in BAs case) or can’t run (in Thigpen’s case) a base set from under center which is the bread and butter of the NFL and why QBs like Chase Daniels/Graham Harrell/etc aren’t drafted 1st rd while guys like Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez are going at the top of the round.
Back to the point…
If what the Chiefs are looking for is to mask a poor unit then yes I feel they should go spread option/arrow spread or true spread 4 WR set. But that’d be exactly more of the same as last year: alright to watch but utter crap at the end of the day in terms of long term evaluations of the team.
Or we admit the obvious and take the cold hard truth with a grain of salt…
If the Chiefs want to grow into an under center style offense then I expect much of the same issues to occur throughout the season. Haley’s already said he wants to pound the rock and shown us he’s got a control/ego problem when it comes to the offense and how its run so I expect us to try the same thing and expect a different result each week.
At the end of the day it starts with the 5 guys manning the line. 2 are decent 1 is out of position and the other 2 are just plain awful. If anything this is what needs to change rather then the overall schematics of the offense. You need 5 good lineman on offense and you can have mediocre talent around that and still produce results. Right now we have 2, maybe 2 and a half.

We cant even get in a rythym in base offense and you want to run wildcat?

These topics are getting old
What do you people want? Wins?….or losses that you can say were “competitive”, like last year?
We had enough “competitive” losses with the Wildcat, Thigpen, TG and everyone else that is/was here.
They didn’t get it done and even bringing back Hank Stram from the other side isn’t going to fix things.
This WILL BE a 3 year process BEFORE we get competitive.
I predicted 4 wins for this year and said 6 wins or more would be a marked improvement.
This isn’t a fast food restaurant to get a fast turn-around people.
Either accept it for what it is OR stop watching/complaining until 2011.
Unfortunately, there are no other choices in the matter so I “watch” the Chiefs from a: “This position needs improvement” to “That’s a rookie mistake/he might be gone”, to “He’s average/mediocre” to “He has star potentialo”.
Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."
"My job is not to collect talent, but to build a team. Individuals make the Pro Bowl. Teams win championships. That is our goal."—Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.

Kind of like learning to walk, huh?
When you were a baby, did you constantly attempt to walk or did you just give up & say this shit is insane? Are you still crawling or did you continue to learn to walk until you finally got it right?
The same philosophy goes for riding a bike, eating, running & everything else in life! The only thing that comes natually is breathing!
