Philadelphia Eagles Destroy the Kansas City Chiefs

Full stats are here. Chiefs lose 34 to 14.

I have only watched a tiny part of this game so analysis will come later today. You know, wedding/family stuff to take care of. Joel may have something coming up soon.

Ridiculous Matt threw out this conversation starter to me on IM - "Did Todd Haley give up on this game?"

I'll be re-watching this game soon. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

I could see how you would think that but no protection for Cassel!

Haley gave up for 2 reasons our o-line sucks ass and LJ and Cassel both had no time to get anything goin.

As best as anyone could give up...

… he gave up. Many 3rd and very longs with handoffs to LJ. Heck I swear they gave up on plenty of second and longs. Depressing game. I don’t care if Cassel threw 5 picks, would have like to at least just put in in the shotgun and let him go down field.

And so he gave up.

Totally understandable in this case. Used the rest of the game as a practice trying to establish some semblance of a running game while effectively keeping Cassel well & ready to fight on another day while running huge chunks off of the clock.

Bradley is player of the game...

Besides the penalty….He had positive passing and rushing yards. A TD catch and some good reception yards.

+1 on Haley giving up on this game.

Football isnt about protecting your QB its about trying to win. You dont shut it down halfway through the 3rd quarter. I dont care if Cassel gets killed, he said that these guys will play hard and he didnt even let them do that.

Not sure how he’s aggressive and gets it right on one drive and doesnt go back to that the rest of the game.

Horrible coaching, Horrible execution and Horrible players.

Belcher the only Chief worthy of an arrowhead today and Haley and the refs should be running gassers for the crappy effort they put in today with the rest of the players.

When Herm did that it was called passing the buck.

There were a LOT of questionable play calls in todays game in my opinion. How many 3rd and 1s did we have with an empty backfield? Shouldn’t we at least give the threat of being able to run for one yard?

Offense, Defense, Coaching/Preparedness

they gave up before they got started – where do even START to pinpoint problems when the problems are, literally, everywhere – all week (many) APers were “predicting” a Chiefs win (no, I wasn’t one of them)

One thing I’ve said for the few weeks that I’ve on here is this: front office had ALL WINTER to get something done with the OL and didn’t do it

I've been impressed with Haley's play calling

I didn’t know how a team could “protect” the o line with play calling as well as he has. Because when your O line can’t pass block or run block, how can you pick up yards. But Haley has a system using reverses, RB screens, WR screens, and by doing that trying to keep the D guessing. I think it will work if our team can stop with the stupid penalties.

I don’t think Haley gave up on this game until it was clearly over. Then he still used it to help the team get ready to win down the road.

by GenericBrand on Sep 27, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Haley gave up on the team.

In my opinion that is exactly what he did. He gave up after the 1st quarter and just tried to run out the clock. That is terrible coaching in my book. What kind of message does that send?

Whether you agree with me or not, I think it’s a spineless cowardly thing to do. There is no other explanation for running it like he did the whole game when it was clearly not working. These guys are pro football players and coaches and they get paid a hefty amount of money to try to win.

And if he wasn’t giving up, that was some of the worst Hermesque play calling I have ever seen. It’s insanity to continue to do the same thing over and over and over with negative results.

by GetRight on Sep 27, 2009 3:01 PM CDT reply actions

Totally disagree

he tried to set up the run with the screens because if they can get the run going they have a chance to throw deeper passes. He didn’t give up, he’s working what i think was a very good system.

by Big Chief on Sep 27, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

said in press conference

at the half we had something like 3 yrd running and he said that was unacceptable and he wants us to establish an identity so he just kept with it. when you start winging it all over the field and get yur QB killed when your down and still lose, everybody’s still gonna bitch

by E.C. on Sep 27, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly,

this team isn’t go to improve until they establish some sort of a running attack & the only way that is going to happen is to keep doing it until they get it right. Obviously practicing it during the week isn’t getting it done so they have to get the repetitions somewhere to become better at it!

Bradley proved today that it was idiotic to have him on the bench last week too.

Haley needs to line up Bowe, Bradley and Wade and start throwing the ball. Cassel is passing at 67% on the season so we need to take advantage of that.

When Cassel actually had a chance to throw, he made some good throws and had a decent game with 2 TD’s.

by ChiefDJ on Sep 27, 2009 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Is there hope to be found?

Tell me what you have seen so far this season that is better than last?

Honestly. I’m not seeing it.

by ChiefDJ on Sep 27, 2009 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

First

our special teams are much better. I don’t know that anyone can question that.

Second, it looks like we’re vastly improved at stopping the run. The D still isn’t where it needs to be, but it looks improved over last year to me. I’d be stunned if we end up ranked as low this year as last year.

Third, Cassel looks decent at QB. He’s executing the plays he’s been asked. He’s not been perfect, but no QB is. I think he looks like a keeper.

by Big Chief on Sep 27, 2009 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh yeah

and the D line looks much improved. This may be something we can build on.

by Big Chief on Sep 27, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

You are living in a dream world

Our defense is much improved? REALLY?

Going into today the Chiefs were the only team in the NFL that had given up a TD every time the opponent was in the end zone.

They had ZERO sack and ZERO QB hurries today. I don’t know if Kolb was even ever put on the ground. They gave up 420 yds of offense to the Eagles and over 500 to the Ravens.

And most importantly, have given up 34 points to both the Ravens and Eagles and collapsed against the Raiders.

I’m glad you are staying optimistic, but the reality is the Chiefs defense is no better than its offense.

by ChiefDJ on Sep 27, 2009 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

You need to reread my comments

I didn’t say the D in general, I said the running D. Last year we couldn’t stop the run or pass. I think the D line is clearly better. There’s no doubt that the D still needs work, but some of that comes over the season. If we are still giving up that kind of yardage after the bye week I’ll agree with you. But based on what I’ve seen so far I would expect we’ll finish at worst 2 spots ahead of where we did last year. I see possibilities of finishing in the middle of the pack by the end of the year on D. That would be tremendous progress but is possible.

by Big Chief on Sep 27, 2009 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

by Big Chief on Sep 27, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

The o-line is

something that can be coached up through technique & knowing the actions that will be taken by your teammates on either side of you. You can’t just judge linemen by viewing film but by now, they have to admit that technique & chemistry isn’t going to fix our o-line’s problems & I look for a lot of moves this week. Either in adding a couple of players or shifting everyone around, but something has to be done!

by ttownmikey on Sep 27, 2009 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Haley & the Chiefs are screwed with this offensive line.

Waters is done. Albert needs to put back on the weight or something. Goff & Ndukwe is terrible, and it’s obvious Niswanger can’t command this team and make the correct calls on blitzes.

On defense, we have no leader in the middle of the field. This offseason, we need to find a MLB or 2, and we need a playmaker deep. Page is not it. I like Mike Brown, but he’s not it either.

Here’s the simple truth: we had plenty of money to spend this offseason, and we didn’t. We could’ve had Bart Scott, Ray Lewis. Plenty of offensive lineman signed elsewhere, but none here. We didn’t give this team enough pieces to compete this year.

Lastly, LJ is DONE. If Charles isn’t the starter next week, I’ll start to doubt Haley. We need to go to a committee of Charles, Savage, and Battle. Bad blocking or not, he’s not running hard, he’s not showing any vision, and he’s expecting it to be as easy as it was 5 years ago. Let the young, hungry runners carry the load.

by HTrayne on Sep 27, 2009 3:14 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Agree. Everyone keeps talking about the right side of this line.

Waters and Albert are getting blown up as much as any other player on this line. I think this line is a big reason that Gailey is gone. I think Chan told Haley, Look we cant run the types of plays you want, because we will never be able to block for them. And I think Haley said, we are not going to change our scheme based on the talent.

Boy is it hard being a KC sports fan

I need to follow college more.

What do we have to be hopeful for this year? I guess that the D continues to improve, because we don’t have (or are unwilling to try) any sort of downfield threat, our line isn’t good enough to establish a running game without the threat of something deep, we don’t have any young receivers that will maybe improve our passing offense as time goes on…jeez. hopeless.

I guess maybe we can hope the team stops running LJ for 2 yards and an ankle tackle, and throws in savage/charles to try and weasel out more than a yard or two out of all these busted running plays.

Offensively, can we realistically hope for improvement? I think we can for the D, as they continue to learn a new system…

I think you’re right that they’re better than last year, but the LBs in a 3-4 are supposed to be even bigger playmakers than in the 4-3. I think the safeties and LBs are the reason we have given up the yardage we have.

by sapper12b on Sep 27, 2009 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

The LBs

are a serious problem.

There’s a reason why the TEs for BAL and PHI racked catchs / yards and TDs on us and that reason is we have LBs who can’t rush the passer and can’t cover.

The Kansas City Chief's 2009 record will be 5-11.

by Druful on Sep 27, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know about the coverage side of thing

they shut down the TE last week. But the blitz, which you have to do in the 3-4 needs to get better. And the yardage today seemed to be more on the safeties. But the LBs still aren’t getting enough pressure on the QB, especially when they HAVE to.

by Big Chief on Sep 27, 2009 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

LBs are a serious problem

I absolutely agree that the LBs are a serious problem. Although I would concede that as a group they have improved as run stoppers over last years corps – they are dreadful against the pass; particularly in coverage over the middle with said TEs. I attribute that mainly to the inside backers (and lack of over the top safety help).

Without hearing the announcers bias you get a feel for whats really going on in the game and quite a few defensive players were on the sidelines pretty much ignoring pendergast, he was talking to them and they were looking away, talking amongst theirselves, like he wasn’t there. HAHA

Yeah, I thought I would be safer in the field box…not so

I left at the end of the third quarter when we decided it was better to fucking punt than go for it on 4th and 1

I almost lost my mind when they did that, just another thing that said Haley gave up

I agree.

Sure what anyone wanted Haley to do? Pass? With 6 defenders getting to Cassel before the ball was, it wasn’t working out too well. Run? Oh yeah, LJ was seeing green before he got to the line. When you can’t block for 3 seconds, there isn’t much to open up the offense with. Handing it off and hoping the defenders fall down is about your best play.

I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

well if you don't believe that your players can overcome the opponent

then why did the chiefs even step onto the field? I believe they showed up to win a football game, amirite?

by Bearson on Sep 27, 2009 4:18 PM CDT reply actions

what I mean is..

if Haley believed that they couldn’t win then why didn’t haley just forfit?

by Bearson on Sep 27, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions
