The Men Under Haley
Coach Haley has a lot on his plate right now. He's the head coach of a bad team, but jsut last month he took over play-calling duties and is now the team's QB coach. That's a lot to handle for a first-time coach. I'm not saying that Haley will buckle under all of his added responsibilities. But it wouldn't surprise me if he hands over the play calling duties to someone else on his staff. When he joined the Cardinals in '07, he didn't start out calling plays. His boss, Ken Whisenhunt, handed the playcalling duties over to him during the mddle of the season. This made me this: do we have a play-caller waiting in the wings?
Bill Muir (O-Line): He's a well-respected line coach. He's called plays before. However his track record at OC in Tampa isn't impressive.
Maurice Carthon (Asst HC): Has called plays before bur his track record isn't that good. Same could be said about his job as RBs coach. Not exactly sure why we hired him - maybe to help fill out a coaching spot.
Dedric Ward (WR): I don't know much about his guy. I've read that he played under Haley while in New York and Dallas. He's young but maybe he has potential. Remember - Haley started out as a WR coach.
Bob Bicknell (TE): I don't know much about this guy either. All I know is that "tutored" Tony Gonzalez (according to the Chiefs website). He didn't really need a lot of tutoring but after the end of the 2008 season, TG had nothing but good things to say about Bicknell.
****************************************************************************
I know that some people out there think Haley won't need any help, he can do it all by himself just fine, anyone who thinks otherwise is stupid, etc. Just keep in mind: this list is hypothetical. I'm not saying that Haley will fail as a playcaller. I'm just coming up with some potential candidates to help out. A little help goes a long way.
What do you guys think?

Maurice Carthon
he’s one of Haley’s favorites, from what I hear.
there was speculation that he’d be the next OC.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Haley hired an OC, but kept calling the plays himself.

* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
Agreed with Carthon
I personally have alot of respect for Carthon as a player and coach. However I do not see Haley stepping away from what he does best ala Seth Payton. It is going to take some time before its a crisp ship. I do see it forming though through 6 games since I’m going to include pre season. I have seen progress with both players and coaching every game. We are well on our way turning things around here in KC.
Saw Carthon as OC in action at Cleveland
Went to see the Browns and Lions in Cleveland in 05. Garcia was the Lions QB and Dilfer QB’d the Browns. A big game because Browns had cut Garcia after the 04 season. Cathon was the OC for the Browns and established the run in the first half but then never used it to set up the pass. Browns O went into the run-run-long yardage pass in the second half and grasped defeat from the jaws of victory. Carthon’s play calling was the predominant reason they lost that day. Painful to watch. I assume (and hope) he’s learned a lot since then.
I don't see Haley giving up calling his own plays.
He has already handed out some of his other responsibilities, and if it’s still too much he will hand out more but he will keep calling plays. Next year maybe but not this year.

I've been pretty happy with Haley calling the plays.
Execution of those plays however…well, you know.
Execution? Sounds like a great idea!
Starting with a few of the OL, Mays if he doesn’t step it up Sunday, a few others we could execute along the way …
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
I have no idea what calculation is keeping him on the roster, at this point.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
I like Bicknell
He has been an Ast. Offensive Line Coach and the main Offensive Line Coach and is now a Tight Ends Coach…he himself was a former TE.
He was a really good OC in the Europe League…he had Brian Waters on one of his teams. Bicknell served as the offensive coordinator for the final three seasons of a four-year tour of duty with the Berlin Thunder (2000-03). The club recorded a league-high 3,704 yards from scrimmage and led NFLEL with 2,667 passing yards in 2002 as current Chiefs three-time G Brian Waters anchored the offensive line. Berlin won its second consecutive championship when it claimed a 26-20 victory vs. the Rhein Fire in World Bowl X
Having coached the Offensive Line, Running Backs, and TE…and with OC experience….I think he would have a good grasp on the Offensive side of the ball.
Bob has some things in common with Haley….
Bob’s dad Jack was Head Coach at Boston College from 1981-1990 and was Head Coach in NFL Europe for 13 seasons before retiring. Bob also has a brother, Jack Jr. he is the assistant Offensive Line coach for the Giants.

QB coach
This should’nt be Haley… This should be a QB expert one that can give 110% like the QB’s…..Everything else I think Haley is fine with, it’s almost like Quality Control with him as OC too..Which is smart for his first yr..
Dedric Ward
Was a WR on the Jets at the same time as Keyshawn Johnson played. If I remember correctly, Ward was the speed burner and number 2 receiver for a couple of years.
Haley was their receivers coach under Parcells.
Maurice Carthon
Was a former player for Parcells. He was a coach on the same staff as Haley when Parcells went to the Jets.
He may actually have been a coach with Parcells before Haley because I vaguely remember Carthon being on the staff with the Patriots before Parcells left.
Didn't know that about Bicknell.
I wonder how his job description changed when Gailey left. Between Haley, Muir, Bicknell, Ward and Carthon, there’s a lot of overlap in skill sets. But I think UCrawford would have a few choice words about Carthon and Ward, if memory serves. Mostly they appear overqualified for mere position coach status, which gives Haley more options for delegating tasks, so he can OC and pursue his vision/lay the foundation.
Bill Muir (O-Line): He’s a well-respected line coach. He’s called plays before. However his track record at OC in Tampa isn’t impressive.
It’s not. But the team that Dungy built was getting long in the tooth during Muir’s tenure, and that’s thought (by some) to be the main reason for their struggles.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Getting long in the tooth....just like Grandfather Time Muir....lol
I know Bicknell is a Herm guy and that is what scares me about his job security. Haley could have easily replaced Bicknell with a former protege somewhere. Bicknell’s brother Jack Jr. actually played Center for Boston College when Flutie threw his famous Hail Mary play…pretty neat….he also Coached Fresno State when David Carr was there.
I like Bob Bicknell and hope he can pick up some more duties besides Tight Ends….cause lord knows they are not gonna produce much this season. I would like for Haley to delegate Assistant OC duties to someone. But we all know that Pioli has said he is not big on Titles. So some of these guys may have the responsibilities just not the title.
"Hell yes I love my truck, but I want you to know, honey I love your love the most" - Eric Church
That's what I'm thinking.
That’s unkind w.r.t. Muir. But yeah, I imagine there’s a lot of flexibility in terms of various responsibilities, and probably a lot of say among the staff who picks up what extra.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
