Ranking the Chiefs Rookies
An interesting weekly countdown is happening over at Scout.com where they rank the top NFL rookies on a weekly basis. So far, Jets QB Mark Sanchez, Seattle LB Aaron Curry and St. Louis Rams LB James Laurinaitis have taken the top spots on a regular basis and currently, the Chiefs lone entry is Tyson Jackson at #15 and "falling" based on one tackle in two games played.
So how do you guys think the Chiefs rookies deserve to be ranked compared to each other? Do you like what you've seen of both Ty Jackson and Alex Magee? What about Donald Washington in the defensive backfield? How does that fare against the leg of Ryan Succop? Has Quinten Lawrence wowed you with his speed?
We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments if you want to rank them, but below here's a poll to see who your choice is thus far.

I have high hopes for Jackson
but how could you not for DAS BOOT!!!!!!
The Good: Moved the ball some, stopped the run
The Bad: penalties and not getting a FG before halftime
The Ugly: losing to J. Russel who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from five yards away
Succop has done everything asked of him.
I liked Lawrence on the end around against the raiders, so I hope he gets more opportunities.
Succup has been perfect
Jackson hasn’t done anything and Magee and Lawrence should never have been drafted by the Chiefs.
Succup in a landslide.

Craig. I usually like what you have to say but, you can't really be serious about that?
Care to explain??? I mean, I haven’t seen much of Lawrence but Jackson and Magee have both been very good for rooks.

I guess I'd rather have seen Pioli address the 3rd and 4th round drafts
DL and DB’s were the “deepest” positions predraft with glaring holes in the O-line.
Magee and Lawrence aren’t starting and we had an opportunity to draft starting Olinemen in those positions.

Look at it this way
DL take a couple of years to adjust to the NFL… Most of the time a higher OL pick will be able to step in and do a respectable job. 3rd/4th round C/G usually play a role in year 1 or 2. So if Pioli is building for the next couple of years you need to get players in that need adjustment times… Yes we had depth there but it was far from quality depth or even 3-4 depth…
Just a thought. Also looking at the 2009 NFL draft I only see 1 OL drafted in rounds 3 and 4 that is an actual starter… Louis Vasquez/replace by another rookie. Most of them are 2nd on the depth chart.

I have more hope for Washington than I've been impressed with him thus far
Braccae illae virides cum subucula rosea et tunica Caledonia-quam elenganter concinnatur!
As much as I like Succop...
I have a feeling that Lawerence will be a great player, if he is coached properly now and gets some play time. He has decent hands but boy is he fast. He can make the moves to get in space and take one home everytime. They need to work with him on punt/kickoff returns. If he learns to catch it and have awarness of what is coming to him, I believe he would be a beast. Then again Jackson will be a beast, just not immediately.
I was just thinking of this topic, thanks for the post!
I think jackson will be very good… no complaints there.
Succop is a good pick, and has been great. magee has shown signs of being a contributor.
But, I’m kinda surprised that those were the only 2 starters the Chiefs got this year!
Lawrence, Washington, Brown, OConnell and Williams are all developmental prospects that could turn out to be great down the road… but aren’t going to contribute much this year, or so it seems now…
I wold have thought that Pioli/Haley would have drafted guys that would be in a position to contribute from day one…
I am not sure if they “missed” on any of these picks, OR they were thinking long term with them… but it’s kinda odd
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
You see. The fact that Herm picks started right away
does not mean they were good. Very few draft picks start right away.
Long or short term
I think the first two picks where picks that were expected to contribute immediately. All the others I expect were considered developmental (which is obvious I think…just like you suggested).
It seems to me that the way to get ahead of everyone else is to get some gems in the later rounds. That takes good talent evaluation and confidence in yourself to spot those gems and develop them. I believe Pioli has that talent and I believe Haley has the personality to get everything he can out of those developmental players. I going to say that 2 of those 5 you listed will see a good amount of playing time sometime in the future. If they do, then Pioli had a great draft.

I'm not 100% sold on succop, yet
but if he keeps it up,it will be very nice to not cringe everytime the kiker comes on the field, and not see the other team fielding kicks at the 15 everytime
Don’t get me wrong succop has done great, I’m just worried about some kind of mid-season meltdown or something
Colin Brown
What a steal

Comparing rookies isn't apples to oranges
More like Red apples to green apples.

Don’t know about that. Takes quite a bit longer for a DL to really contribute compared to a RB or OL. Of course Jackson’s going to fall. He’s playing a position that rookies don’t traditionally have great numbers, even relative to other d linemen.
Succop has yet to F@#$ up.
I love seein’ those kicks land in the endzones. With our offense it’s all about field position and field goal range, and he’s good at both.
cant vote for a kicker
he is supposed to make fied goals plus he was drafted so he is really expected to make field goals
Its pretty cool that the last player taken in the draft has made such a big contribution though.
I voted for him because he’s provided the best value of all rookies

You can say that about any position
DEs should stop the run and get sacks, WRs should catch the ball and make plays, ect. So far Succop is the only one doing his job perfectly.
I agree but.....
we haven’t had a kicker actually MAKE field goals, and who in the hell voted for Colin Brown?

The Chiefs top rookie should be.....
Aaron Curry, What do I know though Im not a “Genius” like Pioli. This will prove to be the worst pick ever. Not because Jackson wont be good, I beleive he will be Good, not rich seymour or even ty warren. Aaron Curry will be great, a pro bowler, I would much rather have Gillberry and Curry, Instead of Jackson and Mays, and I think Mays is a solid back up on any other team, starter on some. Pioli’s ego might hurt more then help, I think people shouldnt think he is above human. He already made 1 huge mistake. Even if Jackson is a solid 3-4 DE, This will still be a mistake.
I don't get that statement at all.
If Pioli has a huge ego like you and Whitlock claim, then wouldn’t he take the flashy player, i.e. Curry? Instead, he took a trenches guy that nobody will pay attention to.
Air Cassel - approved for takeoff
For Now....
But soon they will all pay attention, and be in fear of the mighty TJack coming for the Sack!
"Larry Fitzgerald, move over because there's another young gun, and his name is Dwayne Bowe from Kansas City" - 2009 Cris Carter Hall of Fame WR
In Pioli We Trust! Right?
Get off the Curry Cock
In 2 games “AS A LB” he only has 8 tackles, 0 sacks and 1 TFL… WOW THOSE A BLOW UP STATS THERE!!! Oh and one game was vs. StL.
Just to compare… D.Williams has 11 tackles, 0 Sacks and 1 TFL…
If your front 3 or 4 cant stop the OL from getting to the second level then you LB will be crap… Hell even DJ had 17 tackles, 1 sack and FF in his first 2 games with KC!
Does that mean Curry wont be any good? NOPE! Its just showing that he has work to do!

Watch the Game Film vs. San Fran
Curry took himself right out of the play on Gore’s first long TD run. The FB didn’t even have to block him! Same thing on his second long run… Curry got himself too far inside and let himself get sealed by the OT… Those are two pretty BIG game changing plays!

Hard not to say Succop
The guy has literally been perfect this season.. I’ve said it before. KC produces the only two Mr. Irrelevants to go to the Pro Bowl
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.
I don't
break down films like some of the guys on here, and I was wondering if maybe someone who did could maybe gimme their viewpoint on how Jackson and Magee are fairing?
Curry was the obvious choice
sometimes GMs can get to cute trying to prove they have unique insights. Curry and Tatupu from Seattle are both guys we could have had. With Gilberry getting more time than Jackson, this crew’s first, first round pick is not off to a good start.
Of course, the Chiefs have a history of this sort of stuff. Page seems to be getting the most PT of anyone in his draft class, and he was a low pick (because they thought he was going to play baseball).
Gillberry isn't getting more time than Jackson
In that interview with Dorsey they confirmed that the front line of Dorsey, Tank, Jackson have been on the field together for 75% of the plays so far.
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
That percentage was taken from the Oakland game, where KC got a lot of 3-and-outs.
And I think I saw Gilberry in there 50% of the time, at least. It was something that kinda jumped out at me.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
I just question the facts in that article you're talking about.
I read it, too, and it struck me odd.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
OL in 2010
WOW this is going to be one of the worst classes to come out in a long time… I really only see 2 guys going in the top 15… Russell Okung (Oklahoma State) and Trent Williams (Oklahoma)… The rest of the guys are far behind these two!
Wr
This might be a year where if you dont get those two guys KC goes with WR… Oh crap I cant believe I just typed that!!!
