Raiders Admit: JaMarcus Russell Regressing As QB
Looks like even Al Davis' rose-colored glasses about his draft picks aren't going to save the worst starting QB in the NFL forever. Oakland's passing game coordinator basically said the guy sucks and Rich Gannon doesn't appear to see much hope of improvement as Russell is flawed at almost every level (and thinks he's too fat to get his mechanics right).
Hopefully he'll continue to regress enough for the Chiefs to pick up a win from them in their next meeting.

Also has links to both of the articles this piece was based on over on their site. Interesting commentary too…a lot of Raiders fans are getting pretty sick of Russell being unable to do things that any NFL QB (by which I mean even third-stringers) should be able to do.
Hate to say it, but if they put in Gradkowski or Charlie Frye (both of whom suck) I think their team would be a hell of a lot better than with Russell. Oddly, they’ve quietly assembled a pretty talented team over there.

We have lots of QB's
Lets trade Thigpen and a 4th for Nnamdi and Seymore.
Davis is just batshit crazy enough to go for it

If We Traded Them Thigpen
He’d immediately be the best QB on Oakland’s roster…even with the broken ribs. So let’s not trade them Thigpen.
Send them Croyle.

Russell is ridiculous
Having nothing to do with the rivalry, Russell is EASILY the worst QB I’ve ever seen play in the NFL.
I just cannot fathom how the Raiders can believe they are ever going to go anywhere with a QB throwing for less than 30% completion. I’ve never seen anything even close to that before.

Rob Johnson is the worst QB I've ever seen play
Jamarcus is a close 2nd

Rob Johnson Was Not Good
But he still posted a career completion percentage 12 points above Russell’s and had more TDs than INTs. Johnson’s biggest problem was injuries (only one season where he played more than 12 games).

Give Russell Some Time
I think he might actually beat Leaf out. He’s certainly in the conversation for the biggest bust of all time already…we just tend to underrate that because it’s the Raiders.

Even Worse
He’s shown almost zero interest in improving every offseason. Yeah, yeah, Tollner talks about how Russell wants to get better, but this offseason Russell scheduled a minicamp for himself and his receivers and blew it off halfway through without bothering to tell the receivers. Then he showed up to camp overweight…again.
Why on earth would any team think that someone like that is going to be anything more than what he’s already shown?

I think it's more desperation
than actually thinking he’ll develop. They have pretty much mortgaged the future for this guy and he clearly is a waste. I sure in al’s more lucid moments he knows that this fat-ass is gonna kill his team, but what can he do now?
by midmochieffan on Sep 24, 2009 8:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He Could Bench Him
And I don’t think it’s desperation…if it were, they wouldn’t have anointed Russell as the starter after the year he had in 2008 when they had Jeff Garcia in camp. I think Davis legitimately thinks Russell can play. That was one of his firing points when he and Kiffin had the spat…Davis said Kiffin was a bad coach because Kiffin didn’t think Russell would ever be a good pro QB.

you're right
but I think maybe at this point Davis just can’t swallow his pride enough to admit he was wrong about Russell. I think it may take half the season or longer before they will consider benching him. Remember Davis is not the most sensible person

I think Warren Sapp said it best…Al Davis knows a lot about football, it’s just that he still thinks it’s the 1960s and 70s.

I Will Say This In Davis' Defense
Lane Kiffin, since he got to Tennessee, has shown himself to be something of an immature dick with a fondness for stretching the truth. So I could kind of see Davis’ point.
But Davis was still foolish to fire Kiffin.

Today on the Dan Patrick Show...
Kiffen said by going out and running his mouth he became the bad guy, and that its a lot easier to have 90,000 fans pissed off at him instead of them spewing hate at the players. He also said something along the lines to his team like “The world hates me, now all you have to do is go out and play”

Fair Enough
If that was really his goal, then it worked. I was kind of surprised how dickish he became at Tennessee to be honest…the players he left in Oakland all said the guy was very professional in how he handled the job. So maybe it was a ploy.

Until This Year
I had a “No Raiders” rule in place. But I broke it for McFadden as a) the Raiders for the last couple of years have had a pretty solid ground game, b) McFadden had a good ypc average while playing, c) they were lining him up at times as a WR and he looks to get 20 touches a game, and d) he was the best I could get in trade for Marshawn Lynch, who I desperately wanted to dump after seeing how bad his offensive line was going to be (we’re in a league where we can keep five and he was my number 5 keeper behind Forte, Slaton, Fitzgerald and Megatron).
He’s actually been productive for me in that role, but not nearly as productive as he’d be with Gradkowski or Frye throwing to him. They can at least hit 50% of their throws. Fortunately I’ve also got Knowshon Moreno and Felix Jones and I just traded for Steve Smith (Panthers), so I’ve got options to replace him if Davis stays the course with Russell.

its time to turn JR into a full back or put him on the line. just say, u want to show up looking like a lineman, then u can play there. let him get his ass handed to him and maybe after taking the beatings, it would be a wake up call for the guy to get his ass in gear.

I thought he looks more like a tackling dummy to me, only possibly less mobile. I mean come on, after our weight loss period, he probably outweighs some of our linemen, and all the rest of the defense. Just freaking rediculous.
