Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.  Johnson has a groin injury.  He was kept out earlier this year due to a minor ankle sprain.

We're not exactly sure how or when this groin injury occurred but it's definitely a blow to the Chiefs.  Though DJ had only been working with the second and third teams, he's come up with two key plays in the last two weeks.

In the season opener, he intercepted a Joe Flacco pass and returned it 70 yards inside the ten yard line setting up a Chiefs touchdown.  In the home opener he sacked JaMarcus Russell on a third down ending the drive.

He was listed on the injury report yesterday as a limited participant.  Others on the injury list yesterday:

We're pretty confident Cassel, Flowers and Waters will play and not quite sure the severity of O'Connell's ankle injury.

Dwayne Bowe was also limited today with a leg injury.  This is the first we've heard of any injury to Bowe so presumably it happened in yesterday's practice at some point.

Bowe will face Asante Samuel, two players that are very good while the balls in the air.  Missing Bowe would be a major, major blow to the Chiefs.  We're hoping he can play.

Good thing I checked before I posted, or we would have duplicates!

Not good news…

Wow. This sort of evens the odds in Philly's favor a little.

I hope Bowe can play. We need him in a BIG way.

Bummer.

BTW:

Did any of you guys notice the way DJ leaped over the Raiders line to get that sack last Sunday??? He looked like the fucking waterboy!

haha I did!

I loved it! He needs to make plays like that every week!

He's no Lavar ;)

And if you don’t know what I mean, go to Youtube and look for the “Lavar Leap” :)

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

gosh

thats a bummer…maybe Belcher can get some time.

by SDChief on Sep 24, 2009 2:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Belcher had another tackle on special teams last week

that guy is the next John McGraw!

D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.

As long as we don’t have to see Beisel on the field missing plays.

by dablueguy on Sep 24, 2009 2:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Red Zone blog had reported a bit ago that Bowe seemingly felt ill but ...

that it didn’t APPEAR to be an “inury” – and no mention of DJ being “out for the game” alhough he had been reported as missing practice

if Over The Dwayne Bowe is ok by gametime, that would be a good thing – as for DJ, I’d rather he was healthy and playing as opposed to riding the bench

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!

I don't want to see DJ injured at all but...

I really hope it’s just this week as opposed to several weeks.

Demorrio Williams and Corey Mays to start at ILB

hoo boy, this could get ugly in a hurry

Williams is still an okay player although, he's no Derrick Johnson.

He better step it up in the run game though cuz they will test him. He’s pretty good in coverage.

it's Mays that has me worried

Mays to bring the wood against the run and Demorrio in coverage....

….Why is everyone down on William’s ability to play the position? I think he has been looking great this year.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

agreed

play to their strengths
get some safety help in coverage over the middle

* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

Yeah....

….if they can take some of the coverage assignments away from Mike Brown then he will be able to better show that play making ability he has.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

Isn't that how it's been?

DJ has been relegated to coming in on third downs in the first couple games, so these have been the guys playing the most at those positions. Mays just needs to figure out his drops for passing down, otherwise he’s a thumper. Demorrio has been solid throughout preseason and the first couple games. Nothing spectacular, but he hasn’t embarrassed himself, either. Beisel is a veteran who usually plays solidly, last week it looks like his brain was on vacation, but I expect him to play better this week. I don’t think he could do worse! :)

Hey, at least our punter is pretty good, so we got that goin for us, right?

Knock on wood.

If you take a look around the league we have to consider ourselves lucky when it comes to injuries. We’re not exactly brimming with depth and compared to alot of teams haven’t lost anyone significant. Although I wouldnt mind Niswanger waking up with a case of amnesia where he doesnt know how to play football anymore and being forced to replace him.

Great.

Now O’Connell won’t be in the game to drop everything thrown to him. Ever. In his entire career.

by EyePod on Sep 24, 2009 2:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Shit...

Someone better put Cottam in there. We can’t have TE’s catching the ball for us. That’ ridiculous.

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

by YNinja on Sep 24, 2009 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I for one

would love to get Cottam some serious playing time. The guy is huge, a very tall target, and has pretty decent hands. He was the only tight end in pre-season to catch a TD pass, wasn’t he? I don’t know why he isn’t getting any time on the field. Last year he played every game and was a solid blocker. I can’t figure out why he hasn’t been more involved to date.

yeah, that's a bit of a mystery

It’s not like Ryan or O’Connell have been playing “lights out”…

I’m guessing we won’t see much of O’Connell on offense after last week’s performance… he might be the inactive one this week.

But, Cottam does need to find his way to the field.

TE catching the football? you know, you might be on to something there ...

… wonder if it’s eveer been tried before, like a “trick play” or something, might catch the other team off guard and could be a big play

Did a piece of the sky hit you on the head?

Calm down. He’s good…but one player does not make a defense. They’ll gameplan around it. Maybe they’ll finally send Mays in on some hardcore blitzes and snap someones NECK.

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

by YNinja on Sep 24, 2009 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

they may as well blitz him on every play

because he would be as close to breaking up a pass on a blitz as he would if he was in man coverage

by KCCheeze on Sep 24, 2009 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Zing!

You got a point. I would think that the men that Dorsey and Tyler are eating up on the inside would open perfect blitzing lanes for Mays. But for god’s sake…pull him on 3rd downs.

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.
