"Wise"

While we all wish he would make a splash in free agency (i.e. having Boldin trade one red uni for another), I would certainly describe most of his moves as “wise” — quality, veteran players with character for not a lot of money, amassing good draft picks for next year, and not spending a lot of $$$.

Tyson Jackson, while no means a rookie pro-bowler, has shown promising signs in preseason as far as getting penetration. Succop is going to be a solid 8 yr+ kicker for us…the only blemish I see is the high-risk around Cassel. But for the most part, I’m happy he’s on our side.

With an impressive 2010 draft class, we’ll definitely make use of all of those picks and salary surplus (I suppose depending on the bargaining agreement they come up with after the season.)

The WR and OL issues will begin to hurt Pioli's approval.

Even though this audience seems to be more informed than Joe Schmuck, it seems that we still expect everything to be addressed in one season.

Tyson Jackson’s early (and hopefully continued) success will mean a lot toward Pioli’s long-term goodwill among the KC faithful.

Agreed.

If you rewind to pre-draft discussions a lot of it was Aaron Curry…a few OLers were mentioned but my memory of it revolved around Curry/D-Line/WR (because of Haley) … People screaming about “WE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THE OL BEFORE CAMP!!” weren’t chirping that tune UNTIL they saw the players in preseason (as so many have a tendency to do when something looks a bit weak).

Of course, this doesnt apply to everyone, but its funny to see people harp about RT’s constantly now that its clear that its a weak position. I’m sure if Pioli had the same hindsight as so many here, we’d be in the Super Bowl. But I agree with your main point: this won’t happen overnight and it can be argued herm did more damage than good…too many holes in the dyke.

by jk86 on Sep 2, 2009 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Pretty sure everyone knew our o-line sucked (anyone who watched last year)..

Particularly the RT position. But I agree Pioli is a doing a better job at GM than we’ve seen the past several years. Still a boat load of work to be done.

After Peterson was fired

Everyone was worried about our defense, the lack of a pass rush. That’s all I saw anyone talk about pre draft, the O-line wasn’t even mentioned. Well it seems we are making strides in fixing the pass rush which means we are making strides in stopping the run. You can’t worry about a rush if you can’t stop the run. But now we seemed to forget about all that and the O-line is showing up as a major weakness. I feel pretty sure that this too is being addressed, There are still cuts to be made. I think This Chiefs leadership is not going to be happy with any position on the team until they prove they are the best to be Chiefs. With that said I feel the Line and other postions will be up for grabs right up the trade deadline. So give the guy a break, no one can make us playoff contenders over night, and if they could there’s no way it would last. We are building for the future, with a chance to win a few games now.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

I’m a Chiefs fan Dammit and I’m damn proud of it!

"It seems that we still expect everything to be addressed in one season"

Addressed and fixed for the long haul are two different things. I don’t think it’s too much to ask that every weakness be addressed in one season. We won’t get talented young players to fill every void but, It’s fair to expect that every position get a band aid if necessary.

That being said, i voted that I approve. Pioli is doing what he can and the only glaring weakness we have at this time is on the O-line. I thinkl we will still see some new players before baltimore.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 2, 2009 4:07 PM CDT reply actions

couldn't agree more

Pioli’s main focus was on the defensive front 7 this off season. That alone was a major overhaul and I agree it was priority.

by ChiefsDude on Sep 2, 2009 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah but last second efforts two games into the preseason using draft picks to pick up oline is where I draw the line

Sorry but I hated the timing of that move. Too little too late. I voted disapprove, but hoping that trade ends up being great for us.

Hahaha...

Seriously, are our linemen that lazy and unaware of their surroundings? How do you not know that your franchise QB is running right behind you?? That’s just ridiculous.

However, just throw the goddamn ball Matt, seriously. You’re gonna have to learn that this year. Throw the goddamn ball away, cause this line will get you killed if you don’t.

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

Good thing we have a gm that knows the importance of building a stout oline

I’m sure Cassel and Croyle sure are appreciative of Pioli’s efforts here

An interesting thing

Everyone is SSSSSOOOOOOO worked up about the O line. But let’s look at the big picture. Of the last 10 superbowl winners, the ONLY one that didn’t have a top 10 defense was the Patriots the on the first one. The average offense rating over those 10 superbowls was 14th. (Thanks to Soren Petro in last week’s Redzone for those facts.)
So the thing to do is to build defense first and build it strong and then have enough offense to not give away the game. While we can moan all we want to about what we have seen thus far on the O line, we still haven’t seen WHO the starting O line IS yet. I also think that the play calls and rhythm of the offense has been off which is probably why Haley took over as OC. Had we stuck with more running and mixed it up better last week the results may have been different. Even on teams with decent O lines the QBs get beat to death half the time. How many QBs actually start 16 games?
Bottom line is he is working on fixing something (the defense) which was our biggest hole last year. If you can’t be patient enough to let them build the team then just go buy a Steelers jersey or something.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

by Zodeman on Sep 2, 2009 6:59 PM CDT reply actions

HAHAHA

and if you like rooting for a team that has been stinking it up and can’t keep their franchise qb healthy than you should go buy a Bengals jersey

Its called being critical in a constructive way. The oline was seriously overlooked. Admit it. Our qbs are likely going to be running for their lifes all season just like they were last year. Mike Goff + Colin Brown does not equal a fixed line. Taylor and Richardson continue to be works in progress and our two new picks up would have been a lot better if we hadn’t waited 2 games into the preseason to pick them up

by AK_47 on Sep 2, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

why would I buy Bengals when I have the Chiefs?

And constructive criticism is given to someone who can do something about it. All I see is a lot of whining.

by Zodeman on Sep 2, 2009 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Not whining..

Just fed up with the Chiefs losing and the overflowing love for everything Pioli and Haley. They’re not perfect. I’m just picking up the side of the argument no one wants to voice. I’m quietly optimistic the Chiefs and the oline can turn it around. I got faith in Haley and Pioli for now…

by AK_47 on Sep 2, 2009 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Curious

Why do we sign a QB to a long term deal, but don’t make sure he has at least a servicable line? Are we not setting him up for failure and injury.

you know

for a good 8 games last season, our O line wasn’t terrible. Wasn’t great either, but our offense produced. If you’re a GM coming into a 2-14 team whose offense produced, you focus on defense. Now, after the draft and during camp, Haley’s coming to Pioli saying, “holy shit, we don’t have an O line!!!” What’s Pioli supposed to do at this point?

by ChiefsDude on Sep 2, 2009 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

additional thoughts

we ALL thought Goff was a solid pick up. And nobody is dogging Niswanger too much. Yeah, I agree, it would’ve been nice if we could’ve found a guy to start at RT in the draft. But would that player really have been any better than what we already had? We weren’t going to pick him up in the 1st or 3rd round. You can’t argue with DTs in the 1st and 3rd round either.

by ChiefsDude on Sep 2, 2009 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

They looked good in a spread O.

They looked terrible in a traditional O. The new guys switched back to a traditional O without changing the line.

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 3, 2009 5:09 AM CDT up reply actions

I remember

After one of the first OTA’s that Haley commented our O line looked like a decent unit. I believe they were thinking it would be good enough if we could add a couple of guys to the mix and dump the worst from last year. After we put on the pads and got going, they didn’t perform as well hitting as they did playing touch in OTAs. Like Haley says, he has to go by what he see’s and not what he hopes. So now he is seeing we need better linemen, and the best chance to add a couple of pieces is going to be this weekend after the cuts come down. If no good ones come up then we will probably work another trade somewhere. But I think we’ve been shuffling guys around so much that we haven’t built any sense of a unit yet. As soon as we figure out who our top guys are things will start to come together…so far it’s all been experimental to make sure we keep the right ones.
