Something that might have...
Changed my mind about Matt Cassel.
Last season, Cassel was the most sacked QB in the NFL.
Thigpen was 14th on the list and going back the last 3 years, Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle were in the top 10 in the league in being sacked.
Someone give me a reason to believe.
Huard and Croyle combined for over 50 sacks the year before. I wonder where Croyle would be if he wasn't sacked as much. If the Chiefs had a decent line.

Still injured because with him it only takes one.

He'd probably
be on the bench anyway because he doesn’t have the ability to not throw the ball as hard as he can.

oh brother
If he had a decent line, which he’s never had in his career, he’d be a mid level starter. He’s definitely got the talent and the intangibles, just people are blinded by their hate for them that was brought on by their frustration with his injuries.
he was injured. injured bad.

Every QB is gonna get hit at some point.
Doesn’t matter how good your line is or isn’t, it’s gonna happen. Croyle has shown that he wasn’t able to take a hit without leaving the game (until this last game where he took that late hit to the chin).
I said nothing about Croyles inability to stay on the field, it has to do with that “cannon” of an arm and the inability to put touch on the ball. If he’s learned how to not zing the damn thing everytime, then good. I’m not going to root against the guy, but until he shows that he’s not what he’s proved himself to be, then I’m not going to blindly believe in him.

Thats simply untrue though
Croyle has a history of taking hits in college (Laron Landry 05 comes to mind, or Iron Bowl 05) and in the NFL. You really think he he played behind our line all that time without taking any big hits? Come on, bud, youre smarter than that.

You guys suck!
I seem to recall him taking some shots this preseason. One was a NASTY helmet to helmet shot to the face and he got up and completed his next pass.
He’s a homegrown Chief and he’s got the best arm of ANY of our QBs, you should be pulling for him to do well. So far this preseason, he has looked better throwing the ball than ANY of our QBs. And, you might as well get used to seeing him, he will probably be our starter against baltimore unless he actually looks worse than Thigpen looked last week which I think is a utter impossibillity.

I've pulled for him for the last 3 years.
You should be digging your head out of the sand and walking up to reality.
It doesn’t matter how strong of an arm he has, because he can’t stay off the trainers table long enough to use it.
Brodie Croyles Legacy as a Chief: He sure can pedal the SHIT out of that bike on the sideline.

Totally agree 1970.
I personally hope Cassel is gone next season. He isn’t worth the hype, press and money.

i agree about Croyle
and i am rooting for whoever starts for KC. I could not disagree more about Cassel though, he has shown he can play, and i like his attitude, work ethic, and his leadership. I have seen no negatives with him.

yeah i agree with this
I want the best players to play and I want all the players to be effing baller. If Croyle and Cassel are both starting calibre players, than we have what you call a high class problem.

I want you to understand that I am NOT bagging on Cassel in my last comment.
Even though I think Croyle has the best arm, Cassel is UNDOUBTEDLY the best option for us at QB. His play (as limited as it has been) in the preseason has given me a good idea of what to expect and I like it. He has the short range accuracy of Croyle but is still mobile and strong enough to get away from pressure. His pre snap reads seem to be very good and I believe with some playing time under his belt in this offense, he has the tools to become one of the top QBs in the league.
Cassel is BY FAR the best QB on this roster and he is the future of the franchise. I personally DO NOT want a refund. Cassel is the real deal.

nice back stepping because those comments sure were pro Croyle down on Cassel
Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

Cassel has
No body of work.
The guy has ONE season under his belt, and he spent a lot of it holding the ball too long and laying on the ground.
He benefited from a pro bowl offense.
The Chiefs should demand a refund.

You’re right, let’s draft a completely inexperienced QB with our first round pick and see what he can do behind the same line. Or let’s keep with Huard/Croyle/Thigpen who have produced EVEN LESS than Cassel.
We should’ve traded that 2nd round pick for Brady instead. Damn Pioli!

Man
Cassel’s the only guy I know who’s biggest problem is playing too well last year. Geez.

Agree with ya there Joel
I dont see why everyone bashes him b/c how well he played..Lets “demand a refund” after we see how he does in a what do you call it a real game?

Thigpens biggest problem
is apparently having played at all…

+1
that an the fact that Gonzalez “bailed” him out all year haha
by tomahawk44 on Sep 2, 2009 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
lmao
Well when he is your best option go with it. Lets compare a little. Most receptions. Top three.
Last year receptions: Chiefs
Gonzo: 96 receptions
Bowe: 86 receptions
Bradley: 30 receptions -10 games
212 total
Last Year rectptions: Patriots
Welker: 111 receptions
Moss: 69 receptions
Faulk: 58 receptions
238 total
Looks a little even in receptions to me. So saying that one person bailed someone out is stupid. Or we could just say that Cassel looked good cause of Welker which is stupid as well. Look at the facts.

He played a season
which is more than Croyle has ever done.
He showed he can win games, which is more than Croyle has ever done.
He showed he can take sacks (the most of any QB last season), which is more than Croyle has ever done.
He threw passes to open receivers who could actually CATCH the ball… something the Chiefs haven’t had with the exception of Gonzalez.

This year Cassel is our boy....
…..if he gets injured then I think at that point, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, Croyle gives us the best chance to win. All that being said, I say we take a flyer on a young QB in next years draft. We can address the O-line early and then pick up a, oh I don’t know, Colt McCoy in the 2nd and if he is going to go higher then we have a couple of 2nd rounders to package to move up. Or we go QB 1st pick and O-line with the two 2nds. This would give us some stability, finally, and also a young QB to mold into the future.
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

Guys...
If Brodie Croyle is our future, we’re unbelievably screwed. How can any of you who have watched him play think he’s worth anything? I don’t care that he has a strong arm, he has no accuracy, is brittle as a twig, and has never, ever, won a game. I’m sorry, but c’mon guys, we’re better than this….

Has no accuracy??? Really?
Dude can thread the needle from 35 yards away.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 2, 2009 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why is it that...
every single QB thread on here has to turn into a “Croyle vs. Thiggy” bashfest? Everyones opinion has been well documented and stated for the record. Can’t the subject die? None of us get to make the decision who is better or worse, who is starting or who isn’t, or who is gonna be #2 and #3. Haley gets paid to make those decisions and we just have to live with it. If we agree or disagree with Haley’s decision, this is our place to voice it. Just say that you agree or disagree and spare us all the same old boring arguments about “Croyle vs. Thiggy”. This is getting VERY old.

QB Sacks
Not that important of a stat.
If Cassel takes 100 sacks this year, and the Chiefs still go 11-5 like the Pats did last year… who cares?
QB rating, wins, TDs vs INTs… those are the measurables that I think matter for a QB.
Cassel put up good numbers in all of those categories last year, so I believe him to be a very solid QB.
We’ll see how he does here in KC, which is, admittedly, NOT New England… But, there’s no reason to start doubting Cassel just because he takes a sack or two.
Also, QBs who take sacks often do so to avoid a bad decision, which could result in a turnover. So… if I have a choice between a sack and an INT… you KNOW which one I’m going to pick
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

You should still care
Cus maybe you couldve been 14-2
he was injured. injured bad.
by troy145 on Sep 2, 2009 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lets keep in mind that Cassel will not be that good...
this year. It will take a full season for him to hit his stride. I’m thinking 3000+ yds, 60% completion, 22 TD’s 18 INT’s. We are gonna be playing from behind a lot and Cassel is gonna see pressure all day.
Next year with 2 new faces on the OL, Cassel’s numbers will improve.
