September 2009 Todd Haley Approval Poll
Good morning Arrowhead Pride readers!
We've got the first of our September approval ratings for you today. We'll have Scott Pioli and Clark Hunt later this week.
Our last approval rating for Todd Haley was back on August 6th, just after training camp started. Haley had the second highest approval ever last month so it will be interesting to see how far he falls because I do think that 95% is going down.
When the last poll was taken, hopes were high for Haley's Chiefs. They were high because we had not seen this team play a preseason game yet. The Chiefs are 0-3 in preseason games since Haley's last approval poll.
How far will he drop? Let us know your predictions in the comments.
Here are a list of the big stories that Haley has been involved in over the last month:
- It's Official: Todd Haley the New Offensive Coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs
- Chiefs Coach Haley Not Talking About Matt Cassel's Injury
- Chiefs Coach Haley Talks About Tank Tyler's 'Nastiness'
- Chiefs Coach Haley Comments on Lack of Arrowheads on Helmets
- Chiefs, Injuries and the Prepared Presence of Todd Haley
- Chiefs Coach Todd Haley Shares Some Memories of Arrowhead
- Todd Haley: 'I'm going to bring the Chiefs back'
Make sure you vote in the poll. Do you approve of the job Todd Haley is doing as the Kansas City Chiefs head coach?
August 2009: 95%
July 2009: 87%
June 2009: 71%
May 2009: 64%
April 2009: 69%

Changed from "approve" to "not sure"
Last poll I was liking what I was hearing from Training Camp and Haley himself. Not so much right now.
I won’t go so far as say “disapprove,” because thus all might just work out, but I lost my warm fuzzy feeling.

Yep
I voted approve b/c I’m not quite off the boat yet but I was just coming in here to predict that the not sure’s goes up and the approvals go down.

Trying~
to figure out 1 reason why they would change from approve to not sure or even disapprove!
AND FOR THE LIFE of me Joel,,
I CANT THINK OF ONE~ maybe you can clue this old man in~ lol

Exactly 0-3 and we've yet to look like a legit NFL football team...

In fact so far we probably look worse than last year (ouch)
Our D doesn’t look too terrible, however they don’t look that great either. Our o-line might prevent us from winning too many more games than we won last year. (Dead Horse Alert) Matt Cassel was the most sacked QB last year, and he has a bunch of scabs blocking for him this year. Not good.

I suppose~
But I, for one, do not take preseason games for much worth~ yes we ( he ) wants to win them and thats the goal, but for gods sake, when players who wont be on anyones opening day roster are playin in the last half of the game, it comes down to WHO CARES if you win or not! If you think that Coach Haley is to blame for losing them games, and not the players, Then I can accept the change in voting~ but if not~ still makes me wonder as to why~

I'll agree it's not about "winning" preseason game...
But how about looking like a football team that “could possibly” win some games. I wouldn’t care about being 0-3 if our 1st team look solid and we just gave up some late points against 3rd stringers and lost. That is not the case. We look lost out there.
by chicks_love_chiefs on Sep 2, 2009 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed~
Our offense did look lost out there~ but didnt Coach make a move to that offense? As in no more Chan? Ya gotta give credit where credit is due, and Haley making a move to hopefully get our offense going is doing what a COACH NEEDS TO DO!
I understand and appreciate how some could now change thier opinion but as to this Chiefs fan~ Im going to appreciate what it takes to be the COACH, and what he has done vs what he has NOT done, will go alot of ways in this chiefs fans mind!
In other words, its gonna take more than just this begining of the REGIME change to make me NOT sure of what the purpose of it all is~
THANKS~

Last year
we all praised Chan for coming up with creative ways of moving the ball on offense, and now we’re saying he was the problem? It’s preseason, so we weren’t showing the whole repertoire of our offensive plays and alignments, but I doubt very much that Chan was the biggest problem. And normally you’d be right, winning preseason games isn’t important. But we have a bunch of players that needed to win something, they are too used to losing. Losing all of our preseason games will start to make them lose faith in the new regime. This team needs a spark, and Haley hasn’t provided it yet.
by Chiefs4Life on Sep 2, 2009 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Last year, Chan made Chicken salad out of chicken shit. But...
He sacrificed the rest of the offense to allow a subpar QB to be successful. We do not run the Arrowspread anymore and Haley has a certain way he wants things done.
We are going to be a run heavy offense and we cannot do that by using the shotgun on every down. No matter how bad the line is! We have to be able to disguise our pass plays with some creative play calling plus occassionally throwing the ball from under center. I trust Haley to be a better OC than Chan and I think this may be the best move made this whole offseason for our offense.
I can definitely assure you of this:
THERE IS NOBODY ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET THAT WANTS THIS TEAM TO BE SUCCESSFUL MORE THEN TODD HALEY.
You can take that to the bank for sure.

Hurry up O
Isn’t one of the reasons that Haley put this team through the ringer in the offseason was to get them in SHAPE! Once this team learns the terminology with the O, I have a feeling we are going to be running a bunch of no huddle. Best way to keep your QB alive when you have an average OL. Make them tired!! If they can’t rest then it will make it easier for our OL to block them!

Hey
He’s doing a lot better than Belichick was at this stage of the game.
Mr. Freeze Belichick treats the media like mushrooms: keeps them in the dark and feeds them shit.
They absolutely hated him, and still would, but they can’t say anything because the team wins.

Voted Approve~
Just like I have done so far in all these polls of Coach~
I dont see how you can change your vote from approve to anything else at this time, what has he done to make you wishy washy, or downright disapprove of what he is doing.
He is the COACH, and he has made coaching MOVES for the team. This coach could of simply let CHAN coach all the way to the bye week and if ( and most likely will ) the chiefs had a losing record and not much offensive output, made the MOVE to OC at that time without having to hear the Couch Coaches and media question this move!
HE DID IT FOR THE CHIEFS, not for HIM!~ that alone makes me know, HE IS FOR THE CHIEFS and not in it for himself! I LIKE THAT ALOT! thus
I APPROVE

He's got a perfect record for in-season games with the Chiefs
He hasn’t lost any games and he hasn’t won any in-season.
He’ll still get an “Approve” if he wins at least 6 games. It shouldn’t be hard for a pro and it’s a realistic number I chose after seeing the schedule.
Anything over 6 and it’s just gravy…anything less and there aren’t any excuses. New GM, new Coach, new Players… 6 should be a fair target for a first year organization.
If he fails, than we lost another year with the status quo.

I voted approve
Because Haley isn’t afraid to make any move that he thinks will help this team, I don’t know if him doing everything is the best move but he does so that is what he is going to do. I like the way he is with the media now,
Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

At least he has a pair
I think alot of coaches would of held on to gaily and used him as an excuse {Herm} if things went bad. At least Haily takes it head on and puts it on himself. I hated the way herm always blamed everything else but never himself. Haley will take responsibility for his work and is not backing down. GO CHIEFS!

No excuses!
That’s the message he’s giving off & who can disapprove of that?! The pace of the offense is going to pick up now which will help to keep the defense off-balance; although the results of this switch might not be evident against the Rams (too soon), it will definitely be seen against the Ravens.
The old wasn’t working & we were regressing on offense as evidenced against Seattle so Haley took immediate action! I fail to see how his approval rating could go down for trying to change what wasn’t working!

I voted disapprove for the first time.
I do not think it was a good move to fire Gailey so late (don’t necassarily have a problem with the firing though). I also think it is a mistake for a young HC to try and play Offensive Coordinator at the same time.

Overreact much?
Its kind of funny watching people jump off the bandwagon. Not quite sure how people think removing a coach that only produced two offensive TDs in three games for one of the best play callers in the league is a bad move. We have a strong coaching staff and there will be people to pick up the slack but apparently Chief fans around here have little to no faith. 95% to 74% is laughable to me.

Laughable?
To have 3/4 of the fans still be on the wagon after 3 horrific pre season games is still pretty decent. To continue to have a 95 % approval rating after looking like a division II football team would be laughable.

I actually thought we looked okay against Minnesota.
And they are the best competition we have faced. Houston was bad and Seattle was bad but, I blame the Seattle fiasco on Thigpen. If he had played better or simply was a better qb, we wouldn’t have looked nearly as pathetic. I think with our offense the way it is, a pure passer goes a long way toward making the offense look more competent. The one factor that changed between Minny and the rest of the games is the fact that Thigpen didn’t play.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 2, 2009 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Haha I can always count on some antithiggyisms from you 1970.
Alright i’ll agree we didn’t look terrible against the Favre’s. Cassel looked pretty damn good. That was was encouraging, but we didn’t look like a playoff team by any stretch of the imagination. However we looked so bad d in the Seattle game that the Favre’s game was shut in the back of my “what have you done for me lately” mind.
by chicks_love_chiefs on Sep 2, 2009 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Our offense has failed to score a TD against a 1st team D all preseason.
We only looked good when the Viking scrubs took the field. I’m not sure moving the ball against the Lambs tomorrow will be any indiaction of success, but not moving the ball would be pretty damning.

We mustve been watching different games because I didnt see horrific.
And the one area of concern he made adjustments to. Just think its funny how fickle the fans are around here and its not just on this approval poll but in general.

The offense did.
The defense while the starters were on and Clancy was using the playbook, so a quarter and a half or so, was really good.

However Seattle’s offence ranked 25th last year, it’s not like we shut down the Colts.
by chicks_love_chiefs on Sep 2, 2009 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
With Hasselback thats a top 1/2 of the league offense now again.
Minnesota same deal. Houston was a top 3 offense. Haleys play calling will make enough of a change on offense that we’ll be in almost any game we play if the defense keeps this up.

just goes to show
that some people had unrealistic expectations (myself included probably). Others are just know-it-all pretentious gits who like to compare apples and oranges. Our situation here is unique and the result of the coaching decisions being made are going to be tough to evaluate given that we still have such drastic talent problems.

I think it's a bad move because it's stretching himself too thin
Given the intense effort required of large coaching staffs in the game these days, I don’t approve of a head coach acting as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. IMO, that’s biting off more than you can chew.
Haley’s done a good job of turning things around, but he’s stretching himself too thin. None of the model franchises from the last decade (Patriots, Steelers, Colts) have HC-OC-QB Coach rolled into one. Sure, the coach has been heavy-handed in the play-calling from time to time (Belichick in recent years), but no one has completely done away with all three positions. It’s too much and I think some aspect of Haley’s performance will suffer as a result. I’m not sure where it will show up; it could be in the game management, quarterback development, play-calling, or somewhere else.
I think it’s a rookie mistake and I hope Haley learns from it this season and corrects it in the offseason.
by chiefstatnut on Sep 3, 2009 7:20 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
First Of ALL...
I would like to say that Haley dismissing Gailey from his duties now instead of the middle of the season was best for the team. By taking over now Haley is taking all the responsibility for the offense FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON, so if the offense goes south he is ACCOUNTABLE for the offense going south. Where as if he made this move by the bye week he could easily shove it off on Gailey. I feel that Haley is sticking true to his word, that EVERYONE is accountable and at the end of the day the finger point back at him. Wether we win or lose, it all falls back on him. I approve of Haley, and quite frankly I’m a little dissapointed in my fellow Chiefs fans for not approving due to an 0-3 record in the preseason. The seattle game and the vikings game looked fairly good for our first teamers if you ask me. Corey mays was having himself a hay day smacking favre around. How many losing records did new england have in the preseason, only to go out and win the division or better yet a Super Bowl? I guess this really is a what have you done for me now league, which is embarrassing, because championships aren’t won within the first year of rebuilding.
by seipher77 on Sep 2, 2009 11:17 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Also....
I would say our defense looks much inproved this year. how many sacks do our first teamers already have? it has to be close to what we had for the entire season last year.
For the record, Haley set a franchise record with most points scored with an offense when he was calling plays in Arizona, so I would say that taking over Gailey’s job is gunna benefit the team. On the NFL network they say Haley calls a game like he’s playing chess. pretty sure that still gives me chills, knowing he’s dissecting their every move and coming up with a counter strategy. If Haley pulls this off for the next decade I will put him up there as a strategist, right under hank stram

This preseason we are 26th in total D
Last preseason we were 15th.
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 2, 2009 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No stats involved,
our D looks much more aggressive this year than last, especially on 1st team where they seem to be flying all over the place. They still have a tendency to give up the occasional long drive but I look for more stunts & “confusion-causing” activities to cut down on these once the season starts. I know that “numbers never lie”, but for now: the 1st team defense has definitely been passsing the “eye test!”
by ttownmikey on Sep 2, 2009 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
They pass the eye test for a couple of drives
then fall off. They killed Favre and struggled against Jackson. That may be by design, but I can only go by what I see, not what I hope.

I remain in wait and see mode
Overall I like the way things are headed, just not sure when we are getting there. I’m a Chiefs fan, I follow all the news closely, However I’m nowhere close to being an expert in all things football. From a Management point of view I like what I see, but I know I’m not seeing everything. The Homer in me wants every move to be the right one for the team, but there are things that either I don’t know about or things that are beyond a Head Coach’s control. When Herm came in I had High hopes and expectations and we all know how that turned out. So I’ll just sit back and wait and see. Right now I think I’m seeing improvement but I’ll need at least 3 wins on the season to say it is a success, I’ll be thrilled with an 8-8 season, and almost orgasmic over a winning season.
We ARE much closer to being a brand new expansion team than we are a playoff contender, but that’s not reason to go off the deep end and say the sky is falling or to say we will make the playoffs. Give it time and let’s just give our support to our Team.
is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?
I’m a Chiefs fan Dammit and I’m damn proud of it!

I like what I see
Ok, we are 0-3 in preseason; we may have just lost our franchise quaterback for the 1st half of the season; but you know what I like? Haley is bringing ATTITUDE back to the Chiefs. I see the beginnings of a swagger in the players step that I haven’t seen in the last two years. The players are beginng to think like football players, not prima donnas who are entitled to a roster postion simply because of a lil ol contract. Yes there are still rough spots to get over, but you know what? I believe that Coach will get’em taken care of, unlike Herm who basically told the fans to kiss off.

improvment?
Well after looking at some stats and trying to be optimistic i decided to go with approval. ONE we are tied for 8th in the NFL with fewest points against. That is way better than last year. We actually beat the Vikings in the first half, and that was starters against starters. Although Brett was just coming back. He did only play a handful of snaps though and we made it rough on him.
And last week we lost but we could’ve won had our rookie kicker made those field goals, and i think he will most of the time. That kid has a leg from what I can see. If the chiefs were lost out there i think we would have let teams score a lot more.
Also our offense has had descent clock management, even better in the 2 minute than anywhere else. Last year they couldnt stay on the field at all.
So there ya go, thats my 2 cents

He’s the son of one of the greatest NFL minds of all time and someone who, without significant experience playing the game, has risen to the top in a very respectable amount of time.
