Five Keys to Watch Sunday

Of course in any sport, there are many games within the game itself. Football may be the best example of that, which is why it's so fun to break this sport down over and over again. Underneath I've listed five battles the Chiefs must excel in to give them a great chance of winning the game this Sunday vs. Oakland....

Star-divide

1) Albert vs Seymour- If Cassel is playing and is still dealing with limited mobility, we need to offer him comfort and time even more so than normal. Albert struggled in the season opener against the vaunted Ravens defense, and he needs to play the way he did last year. Albert lost a considerable amount of weight, which would definitely change certain techniques, but at this point that's no excuse. He needs to neutralize Seymour and allow the tight end's and backs to help out the right side of the line, which brings me to my next key.

2) The Right Side of the OL needs to be serviceable- Goff and Ndukwe don't need to be Willie Roaf and Will Shields, but they need to hold their own. Oakland has a decent defense, but they certainly aren't the Ravens. The right side needs to slow the rush and create running lanes at least occasionally for LJ. If this can't happen, the Raiders can just overwhelm the left side with pressure, knowing that they can get through the right side one on one. If KC can do an adequate job on the right side of the OL, Oakland will be at a considerable disadvantage.

3) Bowe vs. Asomugha- Nnamdi Asomugha is one of the top three cover corners in the entire NFL. He has great size at 6' 2'' 210, and runs very well, and also uses great technique and instincts. Dwayne Bowe is an up and coming star in this league, who had 86 receptions and over 1,000 yards last year. Bowe and Asomugha will lock horns early and often come Sunday, and Bowe needs to have some success. I'm not expected Bowe to catch 10 passes for 150 yards, but he needs to make some plays and gain some yards after the catch. If he can do that, the other KC options will open up as the Raiders will start having to roll coverage towards him, leaving Bradley and or Engram on islands with DB's of much less talent. Last year Bowe had 8 catches for 117 yards with 0 TD's in two games vs. Oakland, he needs to do better.

4) The Special Teams needs to keep it up- I'm not saying that the ST needs to block a punt and score, but they needs to continue their great coverage of punts and kickoffs. Colquitt is always money in the bank for KC, booting high, deep punts that often are brutal on the opposition to return. That being said, Ryan Succop needs to continue playing as well as he did against Baltimore. I was impressed with his 53 yard FG under pressure, but I was even more taken back by how deep his kickoffs were. He made Baltimore take the ball at the twenty more than once, and that's of paramount importance. KC needs to start returning kickoffs better, at least getting to the 30 yard line. The casual fan doesn't realize how important field position is, but it's vital to success in this league.

5) Stop the Run- If the Chiefs can stiffle Oakland's ground attack, KC will win, period. Pendergast desperately wants JaMarcus Russell to have to throw the ball to win on Sunday. Russell was 12-30 in the season opener, which shows why he's been labeled a bust by quite a few pundits. Kansas City's greatest strength is the secondary, especially if Flowers is active. The Raiders don't have good wideouts, and if the Raiders can't run the ball effectively, the Chiefs will be in fantastic shape. Oakland needs the run to set up the pass more than maybe any other team in the NFL because frankly, the QB just isn't that good. Their OL is great at drive blocking, but is pedestrian as pass blockers.

5A) 3rd Down Stops- If KC can stop Oakland efficiently and keep their time of possession down, our run defense will look immeasurably better for obvious reasons. For the record, the Ravens in the first half rushed 33 yards on ten carries, and that was with the Chiefs expecting the pass by early in the 2nd quarter. In the 3rd quarter Baltimore rushed the ball 12 times for 77 yards. In the 4th quarter they rushed 13 times again for 48 yards( I excluded scrambles by Flacco). The defense needs to help itself out by getting off the field on 3rd and medium/long situations. Also, the offense needs to help the cause by converting some 3rd downs of their own and getting the early lead, forcing Oakland to throw the ball.

this game in my opinion

is going to come down to the trenches if we can get our run game going and if we can get first down and move the chains to keep our defense fresh . Either way its going to be a close game . I cant wait this is my christmas.

I think Albert v. Seymour is the least of our worries....

….as far as matchups with Seymour go….

He was lined up all over the place…they will have him over our weak right side on passing downs I would imagine…

Good point......

They did move Seymour around alot, and i have to say that the Raiders “D” played alot better than i thought they would. We have to stop the run at all costs, make them throw it especially on 3rd downs. If we can do that we will win this game, but i wonder if starting Cassel is a good idea with the way they were getting to the QB. Hopefully our o-line will look alittle better against a team that’s not one of the top 5 "Defense’s in the NFL.

China Doll

Why do we worry about starting Cassell because he might get hit. Is he a China Doll. The guy is an NFL QB. They get hit. He will get hit and bounce back up and throw a TD. If he is unfit to play Haley will sit him. Otherwise play the best 11 guys that give us a chance to win.

Run stop

I’m just worried about stopping the run. That should be our first priority on defense.

by Chiefsfan85 on Sep 19, 2009 6:09 AM CDT reply actions

one problem with your keys

Seymour plays against right tackles. Albert will be playing Ellis (who had the same amount of sacks as Seymour last year) But the Raiders will be moving Seymour around the line and we might see Seymour vs. Albert a few times. But Seymour’s primary job is playing defensive end against right tackles so as to play the more frequently run to right side of the offensive line.

If Cassel plays and I think he will

he will make the offense look so much better than it did last week. Haley can call the plays he couldn’t last week and Cassel is a leader he will get the offense motivated.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

by bringbacktheglory on Sep 19, 2009 9:13 AM CDT reply actions

Only if the OL can give him some sort of time... Remember he got hurt against

a very average Seattle defense. True, it was kind of a weird injury, but still..

Oakland is much improved and will give our OL fits. This is going to be a close game..

The thing is I noticed, is that Oakland started to tire in the 4th Qtr and then began to make stupid mistakes. If we can hang tight and have a lead, we can pull this one off.

This book starts with Haley

We need to get Oakland on thier heals early by mixing up the plays and players executing. Talent wise these two teams are close, so who ever gets on top early will have a distinct advantage. I don’t see an Andre Rison touchdown in the back of the Endzone this week. Both Ds are strong time of possesion will be a major factor lets see what happens.

by kcchiefstd on Sep 19, 2009 11:01 AM CDT reply actions

Position for position

Oakland has better talent than the Chiefs everywhere but WR and QB. Their o-line is better which makes their RB’s better, d-line is better, Kickers/punter is about even, their return game is better, LB’s are about even (maybe tilted a bit in our favor with Vrabel), and the secondary is about even.

The Chiefs have to play as good or better than they did last week to take this one. the Division games are always played hard.

As a qualifier though, Oakland has been picking in the top of the draft long enough that they SHOULD have some great talent on their team. They just haven’t been able to get them together.

but what do I know because I'm so negative and know nothing about anything...ever...

by IISaiNtII on Sep 19, 2009 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

if picking at the top of the draft means you have more talent

then the Lions should be a heck of a lot better since they have owned the top of the draft the entire decade.

IMO we are pretty darn even in talent, but they have us at RB for certain, OL as well…we have them at QB with Cassel in…WR with Bowe/Bradley, one could also argue that beyond N.A(cant spell the name) our depth beats the raiders, and we have better safeties…Brown is better than anything oakland has at safety.

This game by all means should be really close….One would hope Haley can coach them up and give an advantage…but thats just the homer in me.

by SDChief on Sep 19, 2009 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

This will be a tough game.

Our O-line needs to be waaaay more physical this week if they are going to open up any kind of running lanes.

I’m very excited to see how our D-line does against their run game. I expect our boys to do a better job containing the run game than San Diego did last week.

I really hope Cassel and Flowers can BOTH play this week. We need both of those guys to win this week.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 19, 2009 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah. I think the Chiefs are better-designed to beat the Faders than SD was.

But KC will have to get a lot more out of their offense than they did last week, or they’ll be in serious trouble.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

LJ has been more successful vs the Raiders than any other team

Our identity these past few years has been one of a power running team. 416 carries in 2006 for LJ alone puts its stamp on that fact. That, and our QB play up to this point has been pretty awful for the most part. Couple that with the fact that LJ has put up more yards on the Raiders than any other he’s matched up against and you can expect the Chiefs to come out pounding the rock, right?

Oakland will most likely be preparing for this scenario, and I believe Haley knows this. The first drive of the game should be scripted and designed to put a defense back on its heels — to hit them with the unexpected.

Much like B-More came out playing pitch and catch with our secondary, I think Haley can really take advantage of the aggressiveness and intensity displayed by the Raiders vs the Chargers by a playaction strike right of the gate to a streaking Sean Ryan down the seam much like we did vs the Rams, I believe it was.

This could very well set the tone early and keep the defense guessing for the remainder of the first half. If we can get up early, keep the defense guessing and make the Raiders play to their penalty-incurring ways by making them think too much, we will win this game.

I agree about the first drive!

this team CAN throw the ball, why not do it in the begining of the game, and get a lead, rather than throw only when they are behind later in the game?

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

I have been saying that all week Stag.

We gotta sling it around a little. The Oakland pass defense is nothing we should be scared of. Asomugha is okay but highly overrated IMO. None of these guys can defend a well placed pass. We should be able to exploit this and get the offense rolling early.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 19, 2009 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

But, guys, on the drive when Haley DID try to come out passing,

there were breakdowns that caused that 2nd drive to fizzle against the B’morons. Failures in execution. As HC and involved in talent acquisition as deeply as he is, Haley can’t escape responsibility, but, same as last year, B’moron was able to blitz the backfield and attack quick passes with confidence. I thought that Haley tried, early, and saw the failures in execution, same as I did, and went into a shell, which is never good, but that was a turnover fest waiting to happen, early.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 19, 2009 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Balance from the begining

A short pass is not much diff than a run and withour line that should be our focus I would really like to see LJ and Charles both line up for play #1 alittle motion of charles to wing a play fake to LJ and then either a bomb to bradley or bowe on streaks or ryan on the seam and if that not their the out to charles. Once again the key is keep the D off balance and thinking not just acting on instinct.

by kcchiefstd on Sep 20, 2009 1:59 AM CDT up reply actions

It's just a question of execution.

Need to tighten up on that. I think there’s more potential this year than last for that to happen, but we have to survive the growing pains of the O-Line, and get everybody worked into the passing game.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 20, 2009 3:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the biggest key in this game

is the field position, I agree Succop and those kickoffs are HUGE, and in this game we have

Dustin Colquitt vs Shane Lechler
Ryan Succop vs Sebastian Janikowski

thats…two punters that boot 60 yarders, coffin corner punts……and Succop/Janikowski both boot it into the end zone, and both have a leg beyond 55 yards outdoors.

field position will win this game in my opinion

of course stopping the run, and establishing the run to set up play action, would be my other 2. With Cassel/Flowers healthy as 4, and forcing Russell to throw earlier than he wants to with solid pressure forcing picks would be 5. for me

by SDChief on Sep 19, 2009 12:49 PM CDT reply actions

Anybody enjoy special teams?

because i’m thinking its gonna be nothing but watching the punters out there tomorrow

Its Raiders Chiefs

No matter what both teams will bring thier A game and that means points will be scored. I think the team that gets on top first and can control the ball wins this one. Page might seal this one with another 4th quarter INT.
