Why Thigpen will be the Number 2 when Cassel returns.
When Matt Cassel is ready to return to the starting lineup I think there is an excellent chance that Thigpen will be listed as the second QB and Croyle as the Third on gameday.
Brody Croyle played a very solid game in Baltimore and I believe has solidified his position as the backup QB as long as he remains "available". If Matt Cassel is unable to go this weekend Croyle will start, and Thigpen will be the number two QB. If Cassel does play I think Thigpen will be listed as the number two QB and Croyle as the three.
What is my reasoning for this? I believe that the coaches are working on a package that features Thigpen on the field in different situations. I think we ran on series in this formation last week. I know everyone was saying that Croyle was pulled for a series, and I think they choose to run the Thigpen package then to settle Croyle down, but I think we would have seen it at some point anyway. The first play was a running play with Thigpen (there was no chance he had any intention of throwing). This will add a little variety to the offense and if we show this package defenses will have to take time to prepare for it. On gameday Cassel will start, Cryle will be the backup, and Thigpen will be the specialty QB.
Here is the problem. This means we have 3 QB's active on gameday and as a result have 1 less position player or special teams guy on the active 53 man roster. Here is why Thigpen will be the 2 and Croyle the 3. The third QB can dress and not count against the active roster on gameday, but if he comes into the game he has to play the rest of the game unless he gets hurt. By naming Croyle (the backup) the 3, if Cassel goes down and we think he will not return, Croyle goes in and finishes the game. As Thigpen is the 2 he can enter and leave the game as many times as he wishes. This is how Miami dealt with the issue last week. Pennington was the starter and Pat White was the 2nd even though Chad Henne is the backup.
I thought I would just throw this out there so if Thigpen gets listed as the Number 2 on gameday upon Cassel's return we understand that it is not a demotion for Croyle but a sign that the Chiefs intend to run a special package of plays for Thigpen. I may be totally out to lunch on this one. Let me know what you think.

Hmmm
I didn’t know that the 3rd sting QB didn’t count on the active roster. Good reasoning.

The emergency QB doesn't count
Last season Bradley was the emergency QB. Usually, it’s someone who’s already counting against the 53-man roster.

more specifically
The league allows each team to have 45 active players each week. If no more than two of those players are quarterbacks, the team may designate a 46th player as its emergency third quarterback. If that player enters the game prior to the fourth quarter, then the first two quarterbacks on the roster are prohibited from returning to the game at any position at any time.

Scenario based on Saskwatch's post
Cassel, God forbid, is hurt. Croyle enters the game as the “Emergency 3rd” QB and is hurt. Who comes in to QB in this scenario? According to Saints quote, Thigpen can’t enter the game?
I like the reasoning Saskwatch, but that kind of ties the Chiefs hand in the case of injury.

Teams are allowed 53 players on their roster
but only 45 on game day, so there’s 9 inactive players each week. 8 if you have only 2 QB’s on the roster and have an “emergency” QB.
If the emergency QB is injured, you’re up the creek without a paddle, and probably will snap to your RB or someone else on the dressed 45 that can throw.

Haley has proven his depth chart doesn't really mean jack.
So regardless of weather Thiggs is listed as the number 2 qb on the depth chart, Croyle will be come in the game if Cassel is injured IMO.
Are you sure the 3rd string QB doesn’t count against the 53 man active roster? I’ve never heard this….also…can a QB not put in and pull whatever QB he want’s whenever he wants?

Can anyone confirm this as being true?

It's definitely true. I'll try to find a rulebook somewhere proving it.
The emergency QB dresses but does not count against the 53. If he goes in, the other 2 QBs can’t re-enter the game.

Yes, they count against the 53-man roster
You can’t go over that. They don’t count against the gameday roster

Right, that was my mistake.
It doesn’t count against the 45 man gameday roster. I had the same brain-fart saskwatch did.

Aw I see thanks for the insight!

Just remember only one QB at a time
and if we need to worry about who will be the 3rd QB, we are really screwed anyway. I think Pigpen will be a wildcat option, and Brokie will be #2. I disagree. My 2c.

I love the nicknames Thigpen gets...
lol

the guy can't throw any better than bradley
if we really need a wildcat formation i don’t see why we need him anyways. We could put bradley and charles in the backfield or some other combonation.

Good point
I like that point so much, I’m wreckin that.

oh the Brokie love runs deep in this one.
You should let go of some of your hate, your man stayed healthy for a whole game, you should excited.
Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

But he's right.
I don’t know about Charles but, Bradley can throw the ball as well as Thiggy and If I recall, I’ve seen LJ throw a couple decent passes too.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 17, 2009 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
and Brokie's comp % is about the same so what is your point?
plus that is the most stupid statement I have ever heard, Bradley has thrown 1 pass, and LJ and thrown 3 only completed 1 for 4 yards,
So at least act like you can make a good argument. I have enjoyed our back and forth about Brokie but now you are just saying ignorant stuff.
If you want to talk like adults and facts OK but what ever your anger is that every other post is something bad, let it go.

i agree
that we should use thigpen in some plays weather it be wildcat or not. shake things up with his moblitiy

how about listing thiggy as a WR. Push the rookie Quinten off the list. Then we can have 3 “normal” QBs dressed n ready to go.
by KC_Howlin on Sep 17, 2009 3:28 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
You can put him on the active 45 if you want.
If yo want three QB’s on the active you can do it, but it gives you one less spot for a special teams player.

Probably what they'll do.
They need all 3 QBs. I think Haley will bust out some fun stuff this weekend for the Raiders and the home crowd. Get the blood pumping. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Thiggy run for a TD out of wildcat ;)
Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

this is the same thing the eagles are doing....
Mike Vick will be the 2nd QB but if McNabb goes down then Kevin Kolb will be his replacement

How bout we just get rid of Thigpen
And have 3 quarterbacks that can throw the ball? I’m sick of losing, I’m sick of everyone on Thigpens bandwagon. The fool sucks and couldn’t even make a premiere college roster right now. CUT HIM.
