WR Lance Long

A lot of folks on AP have longed for this guy. A lot of us had no idea who he was. I am gonna profile him here to shed some light on the myth, the legend, Lance Long.

Had 10 catches for 114 yards and one touchdown in game-like conditions . . . Remained a viable factor in the wide receiver rotation.

2007: 14 Receptions 103yrds 4KR for 59yrds 1PR for 4yrds

Info via mstateathletics.com

Keep in mind that every season he had at Mississippi St. he had anywhere from 2-4 QB's a year. They all stunk it up. So you can discount his low stat totals on his talent.

The Arizona Cardinals signed him as an UDFA in 2007 and he spent the entire season on the practice squad.

The GB video is a good one.

Theres also a preseason week 2 vid of the SD game thats worth a look. The hit he takes on that first play is vicious and he pops back up and for all the people who thought Louis Murphy had a TD Monday he didnt for the same reason Long didnt have a TD against GB in preseason week 3.

Long is what we need

He is a solution to a bad Oline…..he can get open very fast…he can run a 5yrd slant before a defender can get to the QB. He will make an impact to our team sometime this season….I believe.

Looks like a Bobby Wade insurance policy at the moment.

Can do all the things Wade does so I guess we wait and see. Id rather see a guy like Long and Baskett added instead of having guys like Copper and Wade but we’ll see how it plays out.

Again, we need offensive line improvement

Catching the ball this past week wasn’t a problem. However our line looked terrible..We may have the worst line in the nfl

by CALIFAN1986 on Sep 16, 2009 1:00 PM CDT reply actions

disagree

the line wasn’t that terrible… and there are plenty of other teams struggling on the OL…
see San Diego, Pittsburgh and many others

yes, the Chiefs need OL improvement, but all things considered, they held up OK on Sunday, and should only get better

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

Really? We were being swormed out there on almost every play..

SD’s line play looked much better..Even towards the end of the game when there two starters left..There line allowed them to make plays

by CALIFAN1986 on Sep 16, 2009 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

considering who they were up against

YES.

Brodie didn’t get hit as much as you would have thought.
No turnovers caused by pressure
3 sacks… not terrible (not great, but not terrible)
the run blocking wasn’t good, but there weren’t many running plays to get it going
pass blocking wasn’t perfect, but was enough to allow the offense to move a little, especially in the 2nd half

Yep and he actually took some hits....way to go Brodie

I saw more guts from Haley's Brodie ten I ever saw from Herm's Brodie....

….he actually showed me some potential.

I agree

Haley grooming this guy is making a BIG difference. Dick Curl was a disgrace….he set this guy back a few years not counting his injuries.

Croyle's options were very limited and he made conservative choices within those limitations.

You have to be on the field to be sacked. There weren’t many plays on offense, mainly because the Chiefs couldn’t get anything done.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

We need guys that can get open quick

Guys like Long with 4.38 speed that can give Cassel a quick target when the line starts to colapse

Dude is a serious mismatch for most LBs.

His speed and concentration is more than they will be able to handle. he would probably come out in a 3 receiver set as the 3rd guy. there is no way LBs could cover him in the middle of the field. And the CBs will be covering our #1 and #2 guys. If the defense brings a safety up to cover him in the middle then, one of our bigger receivers will be in 1 on 1 coverage and probably will be open.

Long could create some real serious mismatch problems for opponents.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 16, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

And give us mismatches in the run game against the nickel, when they're forced to change their personnel.

Engram pretty much brings that, but Wade and Long are probably both quicker outta the blocks and faster in the open. And no comparison to Lawrence, who at this point, still looks like a track star who doesn’t quite have the total tool kit (hands, head, fighting off the jam).

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 16, 2009 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions

No comparison between Long and Lawrence

Long is much closer to being game day ready.
Also, I was thinking the same thing about the matchup issues. If he comes out and makes a name for himself, it should really help loosen up the defense if they see him in there. The LBs will be dropping back to cover him instead of jamming up the line of scrimmage to stop LJ.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 16, 2009 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't see the Chiefs takin' any backward steps, let's put it thattaway.

One of the comments that a Ravens player made was that KC is a “brand new team.” Frankly, it’s pretty amazing that they showed the cohesion and discipline that they DID show against Baltimore, the way every position was up for grabs, and the way people cycled in and out of the lineup in preseason. Now that it’s down to 53, with 40-some suiting up, things should really tighten-up.

It’ll be fun to see what their ceiling is, this year.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 17, 2009 12:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Another thing is this guy makes his breaks out of catches and turns it upfield.

Dont know if people saw/remember the mic’d up video with Haley at practice and what he was ragging on Bowe for but if you want to see it done right take a look at almost every catch long makes in any of the tape on him. He makes the catch and breaks upfield. If Bowe and especially Bradley(based on last game being short for first down twice) did this more consistently we’d see the results on the field and haley would be much more satisfied.

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Sep 16, 2009 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup. Young FOOTBALL player, who's also a top athlete.

And much as I like Engram, if these new guys play well, they ARE better athletes than Engram is.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 16, 2009 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Our line is terrible true but its hard to throw to a receiver when he isn't open....

….A well run route will get you space almost everytime and it became really clear last sunday that our WRs were not getting seperation. If no passing game then the just stack up the box and take our run away. I honestly have no idea how we scored the points we did.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

by BigRedChief on Sep 16, 2009 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Plus we cant determine our oline against the Ravens

No teams oline looks good against them. They are one of the best defensive teams in the NFL….they know what they are doing.

Our guys are good…they will show it as the season progresses. Right now we need to take it one game at a time.

"Hell yes I love my truck, but I want you to know, honey I love your love the most" - Eric Church

by Matt_Grbac on Sep 16, 2009 1:09 PM CDT reply actions

Really kinda disappointed/frustrated with these comments.

You absolutely can determine it. By competing against the best you can tell close you are to best. You dont measure something 10 inches long with an 8 inch ruler, you need something longer, better, more complete. (Weird, I know, but the most literal i could get.)

We found out we’re not the best OL. We knew that, but baltimore drove it home.

You dont even have to be the best to win though. You have to be consistently good enough to win games. Your best chance at being good enough, is to be talent and coaching and executionally the best. (I think I made that word up.) The best still have bad days. But those aren’t as a good have more bad days.

You can learn a lot from playing someone better, like whether or not you can elevate your game, and how far you can elevate it.

Obviously we cant go that far.

by g00dn1ghtm4r3 on Sep 16, 2009 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

he's right though

nobody looks good against the raves and you can’t expect us to make a 180 overnight. As long as I see improvement, that’s all that matters.

by jonnyu on Sep 16, 2009 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

It's possible

(Looking good against the Ravens, that is) Last year the Giants put up 30 points on them.
Their run defense is stout, and i dont think you’ll find anyone who doesn’t agree.

But their passing defense is suspect. Blitzing? Great. Coverage? Not so much. Ed Reed is no joke.

Yes, statistically, they’re an amazing defense. They make plays, play soundly. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the most talented people. They’re consistently performing at the level they need to in order to win.

I suppose there is validity to saying we cant judge our offensive line as one entity but we CAN look at it individually with MUCH greater accuracy than before. It’s like comparing a box full of stuff against a box full of stuff. But when you take things out and compare them individually, it’s easier. This game against the Ravens gave us VERY good insight into the capabilities of players individually. Going against the best players (read, “most consistently well performing players”) lets us look at certain players we value or look at as known entities, Waters, Albert, Ndukwe, and how well they measure up.

Playing the Ravens is like slapping a ruler up next to something. It lets you know what the STANDARD is, and how far away from it you truly are.

by g00dn1ghtm4r3 on Sep 16, 2009 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep. And I'll tell ya...

… I didn’t feel like the Chiefs were outclassed athletically. You can see it’s a definite work in progress, but I think you can also see that this KC team is gonna start punchin’ people in the mouth very soon. With all the changes and all the youth, I was very surprised at how well they played as a team. The Ravens are a team with a lot of prior success and a lot of continuity in personnel (maybe in their last year of top competition). I think the game would look a lot different if it had been played later in the season.

But I’m totally with you, Goodnight. I’d rather they learned about their true weaknesses playing the best and gettin’ their asses handed to ‘em, than get silly wins that make them think they’re something they’re not. Game 1 versus the Ravens might be the best thing that could’ve happened to ‘em. I really don’t think the NFC East has a whole lot that the Ravens don’t.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Steelers and Patriots both have problems with their lines.

You can’t dispute that they both are great teams. I swear Roethlisberger fights loose to extend plays more than any QB I have ever seen. They really need to get him some help.
I am really hoping Cassel shows the ability to do the same thing. He will need to if we are going to win.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 16, 2009 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know that Big Ben can continue to perform week in and week out...

Getting hit as much as he has been. The Steelers run game is worse than ours damn near… They can’t survive on 300 yards a week on Ben’s arm alone. All those hits are going to catch up to him.

Scrambling and slinging is how this team gets it done.

Big Ben’s health will always be en prise every game, but it’s the Steelers’ best chance to win.

Which is why they won't go to the SB this year

He can’t keep taking the hits he’s been taking for the past 2 years. Eventually one of those is going to knock him out of the game for a significant period of time.

His luck will run out. They need to fix their OLine.

There are 30

other teams whose O-lines look bad against the Ravens D? Not a good measuring stick especially after just one week!

Starting right tackle on the team for about a week before that 1st game, to boot.

I’m like a kid on Christmas Eve, wondering who’ll be playing on the right side this week…

But I'd rather use the Ravens as a yardstick, than any weaker team, like Goodnight said.

Heres what a Cardinal blogger said about Long too me

depends on what you’re expecting
If you’re looking for the next Wes Welker or some kind of savior at wide receiver (especially this year), I think you guys will be disappointed. I think he proved this preseason (and in his one regular season game) that he’s not ready to produce against NFL caliber corners. He’s got potential but I kind of see him maxing out as that fourth or fifth wide receiver who helps out on special teams and even that may be a year or two away.

by tomahawk44 on Sep 16, 2009 3:36 PM CDT reply actions

They dont know anything

They know as much as we do.

I also dont think he is going to be matched up against top tier NFL cornerbacks….they will be covering Bowe and Bradley. Long would be matched up against LB’s in coverage, nickel corners, and safeties…none that could match speed with Long. With his ability to get open and Cassel’s accuracy I could see Long doing very well.

Lawrence has great speed.

But he’s been mostly invisible, and dropped as many as he caught when targeted. I think Long is going to do everything he can to push Lawrence, and more power to him if he surpasses Lawrence.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 16, 2009 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

well we have seen him for two preseasons and one regular game and I doubt you've watched that much Cardinals football

The fact of the matter is that he produced when playing with the third or fourth string guys but as his playing time increased (thanks to injuries at the WR position) his production dropped dramatically. During the last two preseason games and this past week against the Niners he lined up as the third or fourth wideout and he simply couldn’t get the job done. He had trouble getting open and developed a bad case of the drops.

Also I made this comment on ROTB but it’s worth mentioning here as well, Long never played near as fast as his reported forty time (4.38). It’s worth mentioning that time from his college pro day and not the electronically timed combine. I can’t ever remember him just running by defenders and if anything he looks more quick than fast.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
