Chiefs Name Season Captains: Cassel, Waters, Brown, Vrabel, McGraw
A few minutes ago, I put up a post wondering why the Chiefs hadn't named their season captains for the 2009 season.
I went back and looked at the last couple of announcements via the KCChiefs.com archives and noticed that the team usually made an announcement a couple of days before the game.
Well, as it turns out, the Chiefs DID name their season captains.
I just missed it.
I was perusing through Josh Looney's game day blog over at the Mothership (which is a good read the day after as well FYI), and he passed this nugget along:
Chiefs season captains are Vrabel, Brown, Cassel, Waters and McGraw
I mean...of course I miss something like this, then write an entire article wondering why it hasn't happened. As Homer Simpson would say, "Doh!"
So, the Chiefs did name their captains. After the jump, I posted the article I had up here before I realized by bone-headed mistake.
For a complete listing of all NFL team captains, click here.
Last Wednesday, I posed the question: Who will be the Chiefs captains in 2009?
I chose that day because last season the Chiefs named their captains on the Thursday before the season started. So, I wanted to get a jump on the announcement and get our thoughts on who we think should be the captains.
Funny thing happened. The Chiefs never made an announcement of season captains.
The four Chiefs that walked onto the field yesterday for the coin toss were:
- G Brian Waters
- LB Mike Vrabel
- S Jon McGraw
- S Mike Brown
Last season, Waters and McGraw were named season captains. CB Patrick Surtain and LB Pat Thomas were also captains last season but no longer on the team.
So, I'm not quite sure how the Chiefs are doing this captain thing. I thought most teams named them for the entire season. At least the Patriots (8) and Cardinals (5) did in 2008.
It's unclear if they've named season captains, which are many times done via player vote, but just aren't announcing it or if the captains change from game to game.

If I remember correctly
Looney stated those players were the captains in the live game day blog on KCChiefs.com

Yep
You’re right. I found that out right after I had posted.

It's been posted here a few times as well.
On game day and I did today for someone down in the fanshots.

Vrabel, Brown, Cassel, Waters and McGraw
I’ll agree with that.
Vrabel: Defensive leader, may have lost a step but pretty solid play yesterday all in all.
Brown: Looked pretty sharp yesterday, let’s hope he can stay healthy for 16 games.
Cassel: The 63 million dollar man and new face of the franchise, nuff said.
Waters: Potential future HOF guard is probably the last “true” Chief left on the roster after trading some guy named Tony.
Quick Draw: Hell of a play yesterday. If nothing else this guy plays 100%

I have as much a chance getting in the pro-football HOF as Brian Waters.
Nice career, hardly a HOFer
And so, Craig finds himself leaping from blog to blog, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap, will be the leap home.

You just don't like him because he's not from Canada.
j/k
I have no idea how to judge a RG really other than what I see on game day and by what other people say. Waters has been a dominate RG for quite awhile now, and certainly a fixture on the Chiefs line. I do know that Waters has started all 16 games except in 2006 (in which he started 14) and his rookie year (2000) Waters is also a 5 time Pro Bowler in 9 seasons. HOF? I don’t really know I’ll admit that, but in my view calling his a potential future HOF isn’t that much of a reach.

Correction
Waters played in all 16 games his second year, and started 8.

We've had this debate before about Waters in the HOF
To me, the term HOFer is thrown around too much. A HOF member shold be someone who was one of the best ever in their position, someone who absolutely stands out. I as well don’t know what a RG has to do to make the HOF, but maybe thats why there is only 9 players who only played Guard that made the HOF. Is Waters a top 10 guard of all time? I doubt it. The only current guard in the NFL that has a legitimate chance is maybe Steve Hutchinson.

The only thing that got Waters on the field was Shields' retirement.
I think Waters was a journeyman also-ran for years. Having said that, I’ll commit a cardinal sin and say that Shields looked a LOT like Goff against great bull-rushers. He was a finesse guard, who could pull, but guys like Jumpy Geathers used to put Shields on his back on a regular basis.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Uh. At risk of saying something nice...
Waters is a more powerful guard than Shields was.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
what does that mean...the last "true" Chief?
So all we have is a bunch of imitation Chiefs? False Chiefs? WTF? explain please
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
Cassel is the addition from yesterday.

funny
many were calling for at least 2 of the Captains to be cut
(McGraw, Brown)
most thought one was “checked out” and needed to be traded (Waters)
the other 2 came from NE in a trade that some people still question (Cassel, Vrabel) one of which people thought didn’t want to be here.
I think it’s a good group of leaders, and probably the correct choices. I just think it’s ironic
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
McGraw was a bit of a surprise, but it says there's a lot goin' on in McGraw's noggin, and between him and
his teammates that we don’t really get to see.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Can't think of anyone to add
I guess you can’t pick anyone who has been listed as third on the depth chart half the preseason (Bowe, DJ). And I would want this group to be vets so that rules out Flowers.
I could care less if they're vets.
If only we could get the entire team to play with the kind of fire that Flowers does.

You mean you could NOT care less.
Why does everyone always get that wrong?
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Too many older vets, except for Cassel. This team needs to develop a core of younger leaders, like Flowers/Carr, Hali etc., guys that are going to be here for more than a year or 2.
These guys you
mentioned are being developed as leaders from the leadership of the named captains. All pre-season we’ve read about the leadership that these veterans (& Zac Thomas) have been giving. When their time comes, I’m sure that DJ & Bowe will step into that role but they aren’t there yet. IMHO
When I think of captains
disclaimer: I know I mention Pats scenarios a lot, but I’m admittedly no expert on the Chiefs history, so I have to give an analogy from something I know. I apologize in advance if this is annoying to some
I think of Troy Brown. He was a really great player, who lead by example. But, I remember his rookie season, when he was desperately trying to make the team as a returner, and then got cut.
About this time that year, he was waiting by the phone, hoping someone would pick him up. He got his break, when someone on the team got injured, and he got that phone call.
Troy Brown, went on to do great things. Maybe even worthy of a HoF pick someday. But, he was able to lead with maturity from an entire career of experience in the NFL.
You can’t walk into this league as a leader, you really need to earn it. I agree with these picks.
You missed it?
I expect to see your letter of resignation on my desk by 9am tomorrow!
Blame my wife!
Waiting until August!
