Todd Haley Had Strong Words for Brodie Croyle Early Against the Ravens

Photo

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley is known for a fiery temper on the sidelines. And today early against the Baltimore Ravens, Todd Haley had some strong words for Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle.

With 9:35 left in the first quarter, Brodie Croyle was sacked on 2nd and 9. The Ravens took a timeout....and then the Chiefs took a time out. Why? Brodie Croyle get couldn't the play called in time.

Well, that didn't make Todd Haley too happy. One series and one three and out later, Tyler Thigpen was in the game.

The sideline exchange between Croyle and Haley is after the jump (strong language FYI)

Amen

Apparently it worked too because from that point on Croyle didn’t look half bad until the last drive or two of the game. Had some passes he put right on the money and didn’t throw any picks or do anything stupid.

Amen again

Yes fellas. I can read lips. I don’t need it spelled out for me. Thanks for the heads up on the rough language Chris.

Makes me want to discourage my children (and myself) from watching any future Chiefs ball games. I may begin looking for a team with a head coach that has the ability to control his tongue (and begin looking for a blog that has a bit more control over what’s written).

Is this post really all that necessary? Just asking…

BTW, I think Croyle got the point. He looked better after the coach waxed eloquent all over his face.

The future is ours KC Chiefs fans!!!!!

It's not Haley's fault

the director chose to cut to a view of Haley. There is a delay when the game is broadcast and he could have switched camera angles before that shot even made it to our homes.

by LClarkson on Sep 14, 2009 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I have to say this.

A coach using the F word makes you want to switch teams?
But you are OK with your kids watching a game where players try to rip each others heads off, and many of the players have been associated with murder, guns, beatings and more?

Not that I think any of it is right, but of all the things about football someone using the F word is low on the list of reasons why kids should not watch a team.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

I mean, Football is a violent game. I would say there is probably some cursing on the field, just a guess. And, um…id say 95% of coaches curse at some point. Its most likely good for your kids, they will be subjected to it at some point…you cant protect them from everything…

I knew I saw an F-bomb in there during the game

I was pissed too. How the hell does that happen? I’m glad Haley doesn’t accept bullshit mistakes like that.

Brodie looked completely stupified to me throughout the first half. I wonder what the hell Haley did in the locker room to get him to come out and actually play?

TOUCHDOWN! KAN-SAH-CITY!!!

by TheScootness on Sep 13, 2009 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

Whatever he did, the offense did pick up significantly after the half.

Whether it was the cause or not, the offense picking up coincided with taking shots downfield. Up until that point they were all short passes and they didnt have to worry about keeping 2 guys back deep. Throwing the deep ball opens up a lot.

by KU2010 on Sep 13, 2009 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

I always thought that Herm made Brodie go short all the time, but now I think mabye he just had that ingrained or something and Haley had to yell a set of balls into him.

What plays could you possible have

for having 5 defenders in the backfield before you turn around? They can bring back Al Saunders 300 pager, but until they block somebody, the play calls don’t matter much.

I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

So true...

Hard to do anything when you are running for your life.

What kills me is that we had okay protection on that drive in the 4th qtr. Why couldn’t we get that protection for the rest of the game?

by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 13, 2009 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

The Cardinals led the league in 3rd quarter points last year.

I think Haley is intense, but I think he also makes good halftime adjustments.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

by Rev. Slappy on Sep 14, 2009 2:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Good and bad.

Good because he got Brodie into the game but theres a bad side to this. We came out of the 2 minute warning in the 4th quarter in a simillar situation(where there was just a timeout from the 2 min break) and this time instead of being safe and calling the time out Brodie rushed it and it was a wasted down and an 8 yard loss that we never recovered from.

What I really liked

was after the touchdown throw to Bowe, when he came off the field you could read Haley’s lips as well. He said “that is how to play quarterback Brody.” Love him being in his face, but you have to recognize when he gets it as well. Great coaching.

Did it accomplish anything

other than making Haley feel better about himself? Did Croyle do the right thing later in the game because of the “coaching?”

It was Haley unable to control his temper (again). Not impressed. It is what it is.

by SuperTurtle on Sep 13, 2009 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

his job is to improve the player

not rip a new asshole. If that’s all that works, great. I guess it was better than demoting him…wait he did that the next series.

I’d rather have Haley calling the next play and coaching the scenrarios that could come up.

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 13, 2009 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Did Brodie look improved?

Forget the yards and the touchdowns and no interceptions….he completed 67% of his passes! I’m encouraged by that but….we still lost.

by Joel Thorman on Sep 13, 2009 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought he looked improved but...

Its hard to tell with conservative play calling and no pass protection.

I know this much though: When he throws downfield, his passes look awful good. Beautiful spirals and usually on target. Needs to put more touch on the short passes.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Sep 13, 2009 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions

He didn't demote Croyle

Haley on using Thigpen:

“I told them to do be ready. There was, situationally, a plan for him. I only got to put him in once. It’s just the way the game went.”

He planned on throwing him in there all along and had planned to do it more.

I’d rather have Haley calling the next play and coaching the scenrarios that could come up.

I disagree. The players need to understand that stupid mistakes will not be tolerated. A professional NFL quarterback should be more than capable of something a high school kid could pull off. This isn’t the Herm “well it’s ok at least you tried” team anymore.

I think people respond differently...

Not everyone will respond like a soldier, myself included, when someone is barking in your face. Some will respond well others wont. some respond better with calm explination. It’s impossible to say which was of coaching is better. There are example on both end that have succeeded. (Tony Dungy vs. Bill Parcells)

Don't Fuccop Succop

by chicks_love_chiefs on Sep 13, 2009 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

You are very right.

It depends on the person and the coach. If Tony Dungy tried to act angry, they wouldn’t take him seriously. If Haley tried to act like your best friend, again…wouldn’t take him seriously. With Haley you know what’s going to happen. You’re going to mess up and the first thing in your head is “oh shit, coach is gonna get me for this”. That’s what he knows will happen.

I don’t expect them to act like soldiers. But I do expect them to act like men. And men don’t get their feelings hurt when they screw up and get yelled at. You can’t go out on the field and catch feelings. Take your ass chewing and move on.

I have to say though… Trent Edwards blew a timeout last night with 45 seconds left in the 4th on a drive that could have won the game, and that was a whole lot dumber than Brodie’s. T.O. appeared to be sincerely regretting ever signing with Buffalo.
