Kansas City Chiefs Announce Roster Moves

And we've got the Kansas City Chiefs roster cuts from Josh Looney at the mothership. Here's what the Chiefs had to do to get the roster down to 75 players:

  • RB Kolby Smith put on IR/PUP list
  • WR Devard Darling placed on IR
  • Placed OT Cameron Goldberg on waivers
  • Terminated the contracts of DE Alfonso Boone and WR Amani Toomer

Of course, roster moves aren't over yet this off season. The Chiefs will cut another 22 players by September 6th.

I have to say the Toomer release surprises me a bit. I guess the Chiefs value veteran Bobby Engram over the veteran Toomer. The Goldberg cut didn't surprise me. I predicted his release earlier this morning.

We'll have more on these cuts later. But for now, what are your initial thoughts?

Awesome.

I hear the raiders got him in shape for us, you know, running away from Cable’s fists of fury.

Ha. Yeah, where are all the Will Franklin whiners now?

Cut from three really bad teams. Hmmm, seems like someone might have known what they were doing when they cut him the first time.

Or did someone who drafted him

not know what they were doing in the first place?

I think Bradley is better than Darling

I guess Haley doesn’t though.

D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.

Or Haley remembered that Darling is out for the year...

"Alright Devard"

Your our #2 receiver! Congrats!

Coach, I have a torn ligament in my knee I can’t play this year

Oh no! That ruins EVERYTHING! Toomer come back!

I would have thought Engram before him. Hope we are looking to pick up another WR

I’d rather fix the O-line.

I bet they bring in 1 WR and 2 OL

+1

I thought he would be a decent WR for us. 600 Yards, 4 TDs, and unlike Bowe…. he has great hands.

by ChiTownChiefs on Sep 1, 2009 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Engram did a couple things this last game.

Hadn’t seen him at all, really, before that. I think he came in sooner because he scouted higher than Toomer.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 1, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

He caught 4 passes for 11 yards. He can’t get downfield, and is a collusal waste of a roster space at this point in his career.

by dablueguy on Sep 1, 2009 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Except Maybe

Haley didn’t like what he saw with Toomer dogging it back to the line and having to stop and ask for directions…

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce

by kcchiefsfan72 on Sep 1, 2009 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

that's crazy

I am surprised that Toomer is gone.

If they keep Copper and Wright… I’m going to be very upset

Championship!

Smith and Darling were fairly obvious. I thought maybe Zack Thomas might be the surprise one to go to IR/PUP.

Toomer isn’t a surprise. He’s pretty much done.

Not so bad....

when I think about it. Of course its a shock at first…..but I have been really happy with the things they are doing with Q lawrence the past couple preseason games, I imagine now it looks like Bowe Bradley Engram Lawrence Lelie? I would be happy with that, not having that 6th WR might help em pick up an extra OL.

I don’t think Copper makes it either unless he is good on ST. They let toomer and Boone go today cause they are vets.

Wonder now if Gilberry makes it.

by hmills110 on Sep 1, 2009 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

On Kolby Smith and WRs

If Healthy he would of been cut. Toomer not a huge suprise but if we keep Engram Its because nobody claimes the KR/PR duties. Depth chart in my opinion looks like this Bowe, Lelie, Bradley, Lawrence, Wright, Johnson or Engram. I say lets see Johnson return kicks this week and give him a shot to knock Engram out. Nothing against Engram I am a fan of his, but he is getting older and this is the show me state and he needs to show me seperation ability witch I have not seen!

by kcchiefstd on Sep 1, 2009 3:02 PM CDT reply actions

Johnson might go PS.

Hasn’t shown a whole lot (OK, some 3rd down receptions), but likely they can hide him on PS.

Cutting vets now

Re: Boone and Toomer
Not to sound harsh, but I doubt that this regime is making cuts of the veteran bubble guys to give them a chance with another team. I suspect it has more to do with knowing their ceilings. Whereas people like Taurus and Quinten could still show something new in the last few days. So cutting vets you know won’t make the 53 would be a good move.

Also, you wouldn’t want to cut anyone that you hope to sneak through to the practice sqaud, giving teams more time to get those deals done.

No one should be surprised about Toomer

he never even made it in with the 2nd string. He was 3rd string and didn’t get very much then either.

D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.

by Patrick Allen on Sep 1, 2009 3:09 PM CDT reply actions

All i could last remember about Toomer was that angry "doomsday" post from the last preseason game...

with the observing saying how ticked he was when Toomer was so non-chalant on the field and had to ask what the play was…So yeah, after that, my perception of him changed. Whatever the situation was with him, he needs to come to play no matter what (injuries, etc)

by worc on Sep 1, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

speaking of Lance Long...

check out the NFLN coverage of him game by game and week by weekk in their “on the fringe” video and article series. He’s a classic blue collar worker. Seems like an absolute Pioli/Haley guy. I would love for him to be a Chief. Plus, he’s been returning punts in the pre-season. Hes had like 4-6 catches each pre-season game so far.

by JBChiefs on Sep 1, 2009 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

Hes had some issues with returns..

But definetly worth a look. Hes tough as nails too.

Boldin/Marshall

Anyone else would not be an upgrade at WR. We need a TE in a bad way. Please find someone who can block and strectch the middle of the field. I though Darling switching positions was possible, and it looked like we were going that way he was playing inside alot on running plays and it looked good. Man we are going to miss his blocking!

by kcchiefstd on Sep 1, 2009 3:12 PM CDT reply actions

If Long falls to us, we prob'ly take him.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 1, 2009 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Honestly, I don't think we need more upgrading at WR.

Like I said, who we have looks good on paper, and most of them have been performing well. OL and TE need to be addressed…or Cottam better up his game.

by SupremeChief on Sep 1, 2009 3:15 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed...

Haley can develop one of the young wide outs into a legit option.

by HIV 2 Elway on Sep 1, 2009 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

For real?

Have you seen our WR’s play? Bowe is the only true keeper. After that it’s wide open for upgrades. Wow. The complaint of Haley all through camp has been that none of them can catch the ball. That’s a problem.

by BinSC on Sep 1, 2009 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

We have so many...

holes it isn’t even funny. We need another WR, C, RG and RT. Its going to take another offseason for Haley to get this offense rolling. Lets just pray to God some lineman doesn’t decapitate Cassel this year.

by I_Bleed_Red. on Sep 1, 2009 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Chemotherapy anyone?

The Toomer jokes have come to an end.

When we first signed him I thought he would make the team for sure. Now that I think about it I can’t see him being much better than Bradley and company at this point in his career. I would not look for us to pick up anyone too amazing at the wide receiver spot. Not with our other holes.

by DTforHOF on Sep 1, 2009 3:17 PM CDT reply actions

A lot of cuts yet to come.

Lokey will probably be a numbers casualty with Tyler and Edwards ahead of him.

by BinSC on Sep 1, 2009 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe Gilberry stays.

He seemed to move pretty well at LDE the other day.

Lokey did some things the other day. At his size, I just question if he can make it playing NT alone, and I don’t know anything about him at DE other than to think nope.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 1, 2009 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm telling you Ben Hartstock should get a look-see

Legit blocking TE released by Atlanta primarily because they had a logjam at the position and because they’d be paying him and Gonzo decent money.

Not surprised about Toomer

He was totally sucking wind getting back to the huddle/line of scrimmage on one particular play, Haley had to have seen that.

by hmills110 on Sep 1, 2009 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I find Toomer shocking

Which is an indication that I have been conditioned to expect bad decision making over the last several years. Under Carl we would have brought Toomer in and handed him a starting spot then defended the bad decision over and over again.

Apparently Pioli and Co. are willing to take a shot on people who might be able to improve the team and if they don’t…cut ties and move on.

It’s a way of thinking I am unfamiliar with…but I like it.

by KCSatchmo on Sep 1, 2009 3:33 PM CDT reply actions

Oh I know

it’s just not the way it ha been. I found myself expecting Toomer to make it not because he should…but because that’s how it’s been. Takes time to adjust my mindset to doing things the right way.

by KCSatchmo on Sep 1, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I hear ya, Satchmo

In the past: Sign vet. Don’t dare cut vet. Might look bad. Keep vet. Downhill season.

by sunny D on Sep 1, 2009 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Carl would've signed ONE high-dollar FA and rolled with it.

He would’ve made the move back in February, with rumors starting in November. By March or April, we’d start hearing about a tweaked hamstring or sore achilles… We’d also be hearing about a solid KC veteran who wanted a LITTLE respect, but had to be let go because of the cap.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
