Why Pioli Waits

Today the unemployment rolls will gain a few new members as NFL teams trim their rosters. This, I believe, is why Pioli has been slow to move on the offensive line situation. I've been hoping we would snag up a good tackle, like levi jones, but Pioli being smarter than I am about football personnel probably has a short and long list. This list probably has plenty of people on it who are currently not on the market. We've got to believe that a team who says they have scouts at every game is performeing a league wide bubble watch. As soon as a team cuts a guy high on the Chiefs radar, Pioli will quick draw his cell phone and start throwing deals at agents. It may not happen today since this will be the smaller of the rounds of cuts but eventually somone will get axed who Pioli covets. He'll swoop in like a thief in the night and the Chiefs will get a notch better.

Or I'm wrong and Pioli thinks QB russian roulette is hilarious.

I am thinking that Pioli is smarter than me

which means that he will address the issue as you have mentioned. I doubt we will go into the first week with what we have now. Lord help us if we do…

I think that is what he is doing.

He isn’t the only one doing it though. We had something like 6 or 7 scouts from other teams here at our last game.

I think he’s poised and waiting to see who shows up that he wants.

Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...

agreed

I think the Boone cut illustrates a concept I was thinking about the other day…

Solid veterans that just don’t have a spot on a team may get cut today, instead of waiting till the last cuts.

that gives them time to find a new team.

That new team might very well be KC for a handfull of guys or more

if we go into the season with our current O-line we better pick up a few long snappers. Cause all our QBs should be starting a long way back from the line. its the only chance we have.

by KC_Howlin on Sep 1, 2009 12:51 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

OK, heres a legitimate question,

Do you think the players in the rest of the league will look at Haley and say, this is a guy that I want to play for? Lets go to KC and run, and be quiet, and do all the right things.

I am thinking NOT!!! He doesn’t seem to be a players kinda guy to me.

How do we attract good players?

by Spunky on Sep 1, 2009 1:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

honestly

you attract good players by building a winning program

All the free agent acquisitions so far would indicate that there’s not an issue getting people to come to KC.

I wouldn’t be concerned about that.

You don’t have to have a happy fun coach to attract players… players respect haley and pioli

would you rather go play for a guy like wade phillips?

a players coach? who let mass hysteria break out in his locker room last season? no thanks, would never want to play for a loosey goosey coach like that- i feel like with todd haley – you would never want to let the kind of coach he is down…these guys see how hard hes working every day to do his best to turn this teams frown upside down – and he is the type of coach where you have to earn the memorable moments with him and the laughs…they arent just given to you …he doesnt spoil his players and that to me – is the best approach to take and i would love nothing mor as an NFL player to be a part of that and so should these guys.

by CHIEFER on Sep 2, 2009 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The true test is if they can develop the young guys.

Because to attract good players, you have to win, so it’s a catch-22 until you win.

But as far as the September 2nd, 2009 situation is concerned, ’most anybody still available would LOVE a job with the Chiefs.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 2, 2009 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it would be a shame if

today’s players had to play for Vince Lombardi, wouldn’t it? Every team would have to have “terrible towels” like the Steelers just to soak up the poor player’s tears.

The same way spunky that Belichek's "run, be quiet and do all the right things" philosiphy draws in players..

YOU WIN!! And you win by doing things right…once you prove your a winning team, players are willing to take pay cuts to play for you Like they do in NE.

Plus we have cute ass cheerleaders.

That's exactly right.

You win by doing the basics right. Time, after time, after time.

You do put the assassin in to it don’t ya. Ha I was cracking up on that one! And Parcells would be punching his players straight in the fact too. Well Haley learned from him and Pioli from The Sweatshirt, so let the bitchslapping begin!

There is always hope

But this is not the time of year that quality free agents are snagged. Quality free agents are snagged after the season, not during. Its not like anyone is going to cut someone who is better than any of our starters.

by gochiefsgo on Sep 1, 2009 2:23 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

don't bet on that

Really gochiefs?? Really?? Are you sure now??

So what was all that about TonyG in trade negotiations with the Giants last year toward the end of the season?? Didn’t Brett F. just sign with the Vikings? Hmmm..still don’t think you can trade for good players at this stage of the season?? This IS the time for that type fo negotiation…IMO…and we have cute ass cheerleaders.

by krayfish on Sep 1, 2009 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes Krayfish

You can trade. That would be the only option. I am usally all for trades as long as it doesn’t involve our very best player, because we do not have many of them (Tony G and Jared Allen for example)
I was saying that no team is going to cut any player who is going to be any better than our final 53.

by gochiefsgo on Sep 1, 2009 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also

Trading will not always get us anywhere either. We had to give Miami a draft pick for 2 dud O lineman who are not any better than the starters we already have.

by gochiefsgo on Sep 1, 2009 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

funny

that you’re calling them duds. they’ve been here a week, and there’s no reason to believe they won’t be productive

They are duds

Unless you think Parcells would trade away to starting caliber O lineman for a late draft pick.

Ndukwe started 15 games last year

and ranked out as the #1 RG in the league in pass protection categories.

You want rookies with that late round draft pick?

Or do you want guys that have damn near a full season of NFL experience.

Rookies

Once Ndukwe plays and plays worse than McCintosh you will be wondering well the heck that pick went come next draft.

Favre is a separate INSTITUTION. Not a good counterexample to gochiefsgo general statement.

I think he’s mainly talking about pickin’ thru the roster cuts for diamonds, and sayin’ ’most all the diamonds are gone.

But you’re quite right about trades still being possible. And Chiefs might have some very good football players that aren’t particularly good fits.

There MIGHT be some more-than-serviceable LBs show up. The KC D-backfield is still making enough mental mistakes that a vet who’s a step slower, but of high football intelligence might bring some improvement, especially . And MAYbe, just MAYbe, a SMART safety might show up that KC thinks can help this D play better. Chiefs are replete in good athletes at safety, but I see ‘em wrong-footin’ themselves too often on minor misdirection by opposing offenses.

That being said my man-love for McBride (and a few observations) have me thinkin’ he’ll make the cut. What I’m questioning is DJ and Demorrio Williams. Athletic, but are they really playin’ that smart? Granted, his job description’s a bit different, but I think Andy Studebaker is playing more like a veteran than Williams, and when was the last time DJ showed us anything? Last time I saw him, he was a great athlete, who wasn’t quite sure where he was supposed to be (like Williams).

And while I’m wide open to be punctured, let me take one arrow out of your quiver by noting that we can’t be sure Zach Thomas is even going to be on the team after the cuts. I like to THINK he will be and I have TONS of respect, but, like Haley, I have to judge by what I can see, and I can’t see Thomas.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Sometimes guys dont fit a particular system...

Or a team might be really deep at a certain position. Every team only gets to have 53 guys and theres always difficult choices. There will even be difficult choices on our team. Those players that are hard to let go will be the first to be picked up.

Hey GcG!

Have you checked out any of the games this preseason?? Some of our starters don’t belong in college ball let alone the NFL.

by krayfish on Sep 1, 2009 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are Front Office

Just look at LJ if their is a player who would let you know what he thinks of are coaching staff its him and I would have to say Players will def want to be a part of this team. Players want to win period. I LOVE are front office from top to bottom and i also did not know how Gailey and haley would work together Gailey is a run the ball use your TE type of coach. Haley is a spread the field take advantage of the defence type very diff, I’m not saying one is better than the other. You just can’t do both. I think the Haley offense will be more exciting to watch and fits are personell better. Good move and glad it happened know instead of mid-season.

On O-Line / D-Line

I do think that is where Piolli’s biggest strength is. Look at his past I’ll take his word on what we need there. You can count on some players comming in, but I think the two guys from Miami are going to help more than most think. Actually this team looks pretty close. I would look more towards the TE picture as far as players comming in, and maybe NT

New England had problems at Right Tackle last year, just like the Chiefs seem to be having...

If you’re gonna use a guy’s track record, that’s part of the record.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Sep 2, 2009 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps the CFL will cut Pacman

then we could pick him up. Or even better yet, maybe the UFL will make some cuts that we can pick up.

by gochiefsgo on Sep 1, 2009 3:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It what an intelligent GM would do.

With rosters being cut down to 53, some “coveted” players will be available. It seems the Chiefs could save some $$$ signing them at that time. The OL definitely needs to be on the priority list if Pioli is using this plan.

by 2L82RUN on Sep 2, 2009 10:36 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure he's looking, but I bet pickin's are pretty slim.

I suspect that his plan was to ask Dad-in-law for a trade (Alleman-Ndukwe), knowing the Dolphins hit O-Line heavy and had some quality players in their decision mix. Frankly, you expect players he’s willing to trade ANYthing for rate higher than somebody he could’ve just waited for.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
