Chiefs Start Early: Alfonso Boone Released

Certainly a surprise on the first one.

#1 Alfonso Boone

The Kansas City Chiefs begin cut day by releasing defensive end Alfonso Boone per 610 Sports.

Boone has been playing with the first team on and off along with Tyson Jackson, Glenn Dorsey and Alex Magee.

Boone is an eight year veteran playing the last two with the Chiefs and the first six with the Bears.  He previously played defensive tackle but was moved to end in the Chiefs 3-4 scheme.

Stay tuned as more cuts come in...

***

Update 12:56 PM: Courtesy of Bob Gretz:

There are 11 players not practicing with the Chiefs: QB Matt Cassel, WR Devard Darling, DE Alfonso Boone, WR Amani Toomer and OT Cameron Goldberg. Working in the rehab area are FS Jarrad Page, SS Bernard Pollard, ILB Zach Thomas, CB Brandon Flowers, TE Jake O'Connell and RB Kolby Smith.

Goldberg doesn't have an injury we're aware of so it's possible he's another one of the cuts.

wow

Didn’t see that coming in the first round.

I didn't either

I thought he would make the team.

But, all reports on Boone have been positive so this is a nice thing for Haley and Co. to do…give him time to find another job.

Money

I guess we felt like we needed his $1.65mil base salary this year LOL

by flyin_squirl on Sep 1, 2009 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Not quite sure how we're going to do this yet

But probably start putting all the Chiefs cuts in this thread unless there’s a huge shocker. I’ll also be updating the previous thread with players cut around the league.

hm

kinda caught me off guard but it makes sense

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

by 808NaNz808 on Sep 1, 2009 11:51 AM CDT reply actions

Im curious on how this makes sense… Though I have no “man-crush” for Boone

Haley told the offense to run it again. When someone said the defense already knows the play he responded, "So what, make it work."

by Jay Cotton on Sep 1, 2009 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

i get it...

“guard” and he used to be a tackle…clever… :P

by worc on Sep 1, 2009 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions

This is a good call...

I always kinda liked Boone ( who I call Das Boot) but he is just so slow getting off the line when the ball is snaped. He was doomed when they moved him to DE last year.

by chicks_love_chiefs on Sep 1, 2009 11:53 AM CDT reply actions

...
He previously played defensive tackle but was moved to end in the Chiefs 3-4 scheme.

I remember last year they tried him at DE at least in preseason but that failed.

interesting

one of those vet cuts, gives him a chance to find a place as well

by SDChief on Sep 1, 2009 11:53 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah...

Didn’t think about him cause I kinda forgot about him. No need for a 30 year old backup who brings nothing to the team.

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

by YNinja on Sep 1, 2009 11:53 AM CDT reply actions

huh...

I think there are MUCH worse players on the team than Boone

by iachiefsfan on Sep 1, 2009 11:54 AM CDT reply actions

yes

there are worse players, but they are giving him time to find a new home. They drafted two DE’s to fit the scheme, I think there just is not room, and I think Gretz said he felt KC would bring in a few DE’s after cuts that fit a bit better in the 3-4

by SDChief on Sep 1, 2009 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Not the first guy I thought would be cut

But not a shocker either

"I can only imagine what it is going to be like in that town if we are fortunate to build a winner. You win there, you can sense that it would be something really special." - Todd Haley

by Jason Shore on Sep 1, 2009 11:55 AM CDT reply actions

Vermiel used to cut the vets early all the time.

A show of respect so they can find another team more easily. This also shows us that the depth chart means squat at this point.

by Bestofthewest on Sep 1, 2009 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions

WOW!

I’m stunned…Boone has never been a superstar, but there is no doubt he has been solid in his time with the Chiefs. Good luck to him.

by SupremeChief on Sep 1, 2009 11:58 AM CDT reply actions

i just think

for him to be cut before a guy like cameron goldberg …the guy was working with the first team a lot throughout training camp no?

by CHIEFER on Sep 1, 2009 11:58 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah he was

If he was going to be cut anyway it’s better to do it now so he can find another job. Class move by Haley IMO.

by Joel Thorman on Sep 1, 2009 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

One less interesting name on the team

D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.

by Patrick Allen on Sep 1, 2009 11:58 AM CDT reply actions

It says to me that

Haley isn’t necessarily playing the best players in preseason as much as the guys he and his staff have questions about, or the ones on the bubble if you will.

by JohnNdallas on Sep 1, 2009 12:01 PM CDT reply actions

I wondered how they were going to get Dorsey,

Jackson, and Magee enough plays. Now I know. They were a little overloaded at DE.

by BinSC on Sep 1, 2009 12:18 PM CDT reply actions

really?

that’s 3 DE at 2 spots…

I wouldn’t be surprised if they bring in a replacement…

I'm wary of saying this was "so he can find another job," though.

Pioli/Haley’s job is not to help people get jobs with other teams, nor let other teams get talent—no matter how mediocre.

I’m thinking this is less about helping him find employment and more about not wanting to cut bubble guys yet. There was no room for Boone.

Let's not be crazy either,

if you can’t make a 2-14 team, and played on one of the worst defenses in the league, just how much help can you be to another team?

different scheme

a 4-3 team might be a better fit for him, and he could provide good depth somewhere

by iachiefsfan on Sep 1, 2009 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe

but he was moved to DE while we were playing a 4-3 last year. Not like the shift to the 3-4 affected him.

right undersized 4/3 DE's are candidates for 3-4 OLBs

and that’s about it. Hali is gonna work out I think. He has the want-to.

That's what I'm saying.

He was cut because he doesn’t fit and his talent is limited—NOT to help him find a job.

by Justin Bopp on Sep 1, 2009 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Boone is a 3-tech DT

I bet some team that runs the 4-3 will pick him up for depth…he’s still a valuable backup.

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

by PVChiefsfan on Sep 1, 2009 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Wooooow

Didn’t see that coming …. Stag makes a great point though, maybe he just needs to be in a 4-3.

by Keyser Sose on Sep 1, 2009 12:39 PM CDT reply actions

I would imagine there are certain vets who the team knows aren’t going to be on the time come final cuts. Doing it for the initial wave, and saving 5 spots for guys to make one last impression is the smart thing to do.

Josh Looney's Blog
All players were accounted for outdoors besides Boone, Toomer and Goldberg. Boone has reportedly been released by the team according to a number of sources. His absence and reported release brings question to the status of Goldberg and Toomer. A lot of dots can be connected, especially with injuries to Darling and Smith, but until the club makes things official everything is purely speculation.

First Cut

I will gladly say I like the move. Boone is an average 4-3 tackle and thats all. My brother does not agree but I can tell coach agreed with me. Dorsey, Jackson, and Magee who I think will be are best defensive lineman this year are all better than Boone and at his age if we are not planning on him starting it is a great move for both parties. Im not sure if we shoped him for trade first, but thats the only thing that might have been a better move. Please tell me we did not keep Copper over Toomer though come on DROPPER!!!!

Ron Edwards

Would not feel bad if we let him go either, I trully think Lokey is are best DT as he was last pre-season before getting released and then added to the practice squad. Would like to see Dorsey at that NT spot just to see how it works with Jackson, Dorsey, and Magee on the field at the same time. NT have looked average would like to see an upgrade if Poss!!!

WR

I am very confident in are WR group Bowe, Lelie, Bradley, Lawrence, Wright, and Johnson should all make the team I dont really know where Toomer or Engram should fit in other thatn coaches for the younger WRs

I'm with you... other than Wright

Give me Bowe, Bradley, Lawrence, Toomer, Johnson, Lelie and Engram

OR bring in lance long to replace Engram!

Darling

If Darling was healthy I would say def cut Toomer but who is going to block on the outside that is yet to be determined Lawrence has shown promise Lelie has the ability but will they countinue if Toomer is not pushing them since Darling is injured

by kcchiefstd on Sep 1, 2009 1:19 PM CDT reply actions

No way man

You have to think Bowe, Lelie, Bradley are givens to stay at this point. Lawrence stays because of his speed and potential. Engram stays because he’s a veteran slot receiver. If they keep six, then Wright has a good chance given his preseason work and performance. Toomer is gone, and soon, Taurus will be too.

by Keyser Sose on Sep 1, 2009 1:21 PM CDT reply actions

I have no ideaq

I don’t know why everyone is down on Toomer.

He’s smart, reliable and has great hands

He hasn’t been played much in the preseason, but I think that’s just because you know what you’re getting with him. He’s a veteran.

I like Johnson a lot, I hope that if he does get cut, it’s for the practice squad
