Chiefs to Cut Five Players in NFL Roster Trim Down
The 3 PM roster cut deadline today looms for a handful of Kansas City Chiefs.
Technically, the Chiefs need to trim the roster by five players - from 80 to 75. WR Devard Darling may help reduce that number by one if he's put on injured reserve after reportedly tearing his ACL in Saturday's game against the Seahawks.
Still, I've gone ahead and listed my five cuts that I think the Kansas City Chiefs could make today.
Consider this the cut day morning open thread. We''ll announce players cuts as they happen.
So, as I'm thinking about these cuts, I tend to keep players that I think may not necessarily be good at their position but can kick butt on special teams. Special teams is the extra perspective you have to throw in for some of these guys, especially the linebackers and other defensive players.
Price was a rookie mini camp signee back in May for the Chiefs. Since then, he's made little impression on those covering the Chiefs. His name was rarely mentioned in training camp reports but when it was, it was generally for good things.
I just think that Price is a bit of the odd man out with the safeties. I think the Chiefs could bring in another safety after they cut Price but I think they could stand to get rid of him now.
CB Londen Fryar
Cornerbacks are pretty easy to come by, especially ones that aren't starting and play mainly special teams. Fryar is one of these guys on the edge. He hasn't distinguished himself and probably has higher aspirations than to sit on the Chiefs' practice squad.
The Chiefs have eight cornerbacks on the roster now. They probably only need about six or so.
CB Jackie Bates
I have similar thoughts on Bates as I did on Fryar. Both guys are on that special teams/cornerback edge where they could stay on for another round of cuts but they'll be gone no matter what IMO.
Speaking of special teams, I think Goldberg is out because he's not a player who is going to regularly tear it up on special teams, if play on that squad at all.
The odd man out o-linemen cuts are usually pretty easy. I think Goldberg is gone today.
Admittedly, this cut is a bit of stretch considering that Dantrell Savage has had a decent preseason. But I think that Todd Haley will let Savage go on this first round of cuts so that Savage can have a better chance of catching on somewhere.
Savage couldn't really ever be a regular running back IMO, which is why he's let go over Javarris Williams.

Instead of Dantrell, I'll say Taurus gets cut.
And instead of Bates/Fryar (I don’t know which, but I doubt we cut both, just from a numbers perspective), I say we cut Dion Gales.
I think you nailed the other 3, though.

I think Taurus Johnson
is done in the next round of cuts.

For some reason
Seems like coaches keep the WRs until the last game.

Price, Bates, Gales, Kolby Smith, Harris
I think Kolby Smith goes before Savage, but ultimately I think both get cut.

Can they cut Kolby?
Isn’t he PUP? Also aren’t you not allowed to cut a guy who is hurt?

i think
you can cut them with an injury settlement, right?
but, more likely, they just keep him on PUP… and keep 53 other guys

Cuts
I’m a Taurus Johnson fan loved what he brought every game at the college level to much upside to cut and I would like to see him get some touches returning kicks. Bad move if we cut him.
I have NO clue why McGraw is running with first string as many plays as he blew last year in coverage and another horrible looking mistake against Minn what are you thinking Haley I know he is a good guy and was a GREAT safety for K-State but it has not transferd to the NFL. My cut list Goldberg, Price, Bates, Fryar, COPPER/DROPPER not #1 or #2 WR Lelie is looking good Toomer has hands and has shown he will get open. Bradley has looked great. Lawrence gets open major upside. Wright has made plays every game although he droped one he should of caught. I love Battles size, power and speed but to many mistakes please cut him, he will lose more games than he will help win!!!

rookie FAs vs veterans
it’s possible the rookie free agents go first…
Price, Gales, Bates, Goldberg, Harris
but, these are also the practice squad guys…
I kinda hope these first cuts are bigger… McIntosh, Goff, McBride, Copper and either Morgan or McGraw… give them more time to find a new team, since they aren’t ps eligible. And, it sends a strong message that this team is making the major changes needed to improve.
I think KC will be very active trying to replace some of these guys when other teams make their cut

Something I dont understand
is why is the second round of cuts so drastic when compared to the first? Our first cut takes us down to 94% of highest roster number, and then 5 days later we go down to 66% from our highest number. I dont know why it isn’t more gradual and spread out.

The same reason...
why there isn’t a rookie salary cap…because it makes sense~!

Pre-season games
you need enough fodder for that last game without getting your starters too beat up.

yeah
that’s what I was thinking too.

my best guess for today
Goldberg, Fryer,Wright get cut Darling is moved to IR and Thomas retires or gets the injury settlement and gets cut.

Don't believe we need to "cut" 5
I think Kolby to PUP, Darling to IR, and Thomas to retire/cut. That only leaves two moves to make. Price and Goldberg.
by BinSC on Sep 1, 2009 8:56 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
nah that'd still be 5 that NEED to be cut
that way we can sign 3 OL

Don't think anyone extra will be cut
until they find someone they want to sign. That probably won’t be till Saturday. Today is scrub cut.

They need extra help before saturday
along the line, in the return game, there better be more than 5 cuts this week

Hope they keep Fryar
His father was a Patriots legend. Was picked the number 1 overall pick in the draft out of Nebraska as a WR. I was really rooting for this kid, I think he’ll keep getting better and better, hopefully he’ll at least make the practice squad.

What about Haley/Pioli
makes you think they care whether or not a player has a chance of getting on with another team? Everything I’ve seen is that they’d do the exact opposite—they don’t want other teams to get any talent at all, marginal or otherwise.
I like the new regime, but benevolent patrons they’re not.

Haley is going to cut himself
He needs to take a more active role in the cutting of players. What better way than to cut himself.

Would not be surprised...
To see Turk cut. I don’t think Savage will go this week.
Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

Price, Bates, Gales, Goldberg, and Crabtree

Im with you on those 4, except crabtree, instead, i see Turk Mcbride so he can catch on
and maybe Dantrelle Savage
Dont see how he makes it if he isnt even returning kicks.

but if I was making the cuts
Gales/Wright/Bates/Price/Goldberg

Coclough...
or whatever his name is. That guy is bad. If you re-watch the Seahawks game (as I have) you will see Coclough get burned repeatedly by T.J. “Whoseyourmomma” at the end of the first half. If Coclough is still on the team after the first round of cuts, I will be extremely dissapointed.
