An hour or so after Saturday’s scrimmage ended, Dick Haley sat in his hotel’s lobby and talked about his son’s team. He said Todd has a delicate and time-consuming project ahead. It’ll take players, Dick Haley said, and it might take years. But he said he thinks his son possesses a skill that some NFL coaches just don’t have. It’s one he got on the couch so many years ago.

"He knows what good is," Dick said. "Some guys, they’ll be sitting there telling me this guy looks really good. I’ll look at it, and I’ll say, ‘That ain’t good.’ What they think isn’t — it’s maybe good for minor-league football. And a lot of people don’t know what good is. Well, I think Todd knows what good is.

"Hopefully from me and what we learned, we don’t spend a lot of time on guys who aren’t going to get to the top."

I HOPE he spent some time looking at the young WRs and they both either like what they see, or we see some new faces. That and o-line © are still my big question-marks.

To have one of the best personnel guys ever say Haley knows talent, and then couple that with the guy who is rated the best current judge of talent (Pioli), makes me feel gooder and gooder about the prospects here. There will be times that we bitch and moan because they cut someone loose or didn’t pick someone up but we better remember that these are two guys who really know what they are doing. I think they will do everything they can to field a team that can win this year, but the foundation for the future is the most important thing we can build this year.
